71-Year-Old Woman Dragged Through Supermarket Parking Lot

Man grabbed purse, and woman sustained head injury

A Toms River woman was dragged 40 feet after a man in a car drove past and grabbed her purse outside a Route 37 supermarket this afternoon.

The 71-year-old woman was in the Stop and Shop parking lot around 4 p.m. Monday when a white man driving a dark vehicle reached out and grabbed her purse, said Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy.

With the purse twisted over her shoulder, the woman was dragged for 40 feet before managing to free herself, said the police chief.

The suspect is still at large. Police are looking for a white man, approximately 30 years old, with short brown hair, driving a dark vehicle last seen driving westbound on Route 37 at high speeds.

Silverton First Aid Squad responded to treat cuts and bruises the woman suffered on her knees and arms, as well as a head injury, police said.

The victim’s beige purse contained about $50 and credit cards, Mastronardy said.

Toms River Police Officer Ryan Quinn is investigating along with Detectives Lou Santoro and Alex Scherer. Anyone with information is requested to call 732-349-0150 ext 1276.

It gets worse and worse every day in Toms River. These local parking lots need more security. Stop & Shop makes a fortune every day and they can well afford to hire people to watch their lots.

It's the same as it's always been in Toms River and everywhere. We just get to read about every single thing going on now, that's all.

Creepy bastid. My 82 yr old mother insists on putting her purse strap over her head and shoulder like that... I keep telling her how badly she could get hurt if someone tries to yank it off her, drags her or knocks her down.
I tell her, LET them take it from you! Just get a good look at them and whatever vehicle they get into. It's not worth getting seriously injured or killed over. I'm going to tell her about this, maybe she'll stop 'protecting' her purse this way.

My Mother is 85 and I deal with the same thing! She's a born and raised city kid, and thinks she can take care of herself. I'm blessed I guess.....I know her better than anyone.....and ....I'd hate to piss her off! Stay safe Mom!

I know the feeling. My mother was 89 when she passed away. She thought she knew best until the very end. She still drove until a week before she died. I always had to tell her "Ma, watch your bag" when we were shopping and she would always say "Let them try it".

We have 20 fewer cops than we should have, reflecting the spending priorities of the mayor and council. "Your tax dollars at work" -- somewhere else, not in public safety.

There downtown watching cars at crosswalks follow the NEW law. Curb to curb for the walker and cars MUST wait till they get there , no matter how LONG it takes them ! Tickets, tickets, ring $$$$$ ring $$$$$$.....Same as the NEW camera's at traffic lights ..Ring $$$$ Ring $$$.It's NOT about the law it's about the money the new law's bring ....Period !

TR needs more police interaction. Of course, because of the cut backs, the PD will blame the Gov or politicians for whats is going on lately. So it probably is a no win situation. Perhaps the businesses should invest in their own security..especially this time of year. I try to be more diligent but sometimes we just all get a bit complacent. I hope she will be okay.

It is just getting so bad around here! Just to let everyone know more cars were broken into last weekend on Anthony Ave, off Coolige Ave, off RT 37. This is not the first time it has happend! Last year there was a stolen car sitting outside my son's house for 4 days until I called the police! They said watch it until we get there, if any gows near it call us!!! The papers need to start publishing every, I mean EVERY robbery in town so we know what is going on. Where are the police? I never see one in my neighborhood. Thanks for letting me vent. MERRY CHRISTMAS! Be careful out there.

This is what you fools get for reelecting Mayor Maureen, Senile Idiot that he is and the rest of Gilmore's band of tax cheats and bag boys. Trash River with our large police force, the latest technology and more Dunkin Donuts shops to feed them. He was "last seen driving westbound on Route 37 at high speeds" and that is the last any one will see him till he drops a share of the loot off at town hall and goes merrily on his way.

Be safe, vigilent and don't be afraid to step in and help someone. I hope everyone has a safe holiday!"
