A Step Closer to Removing Seaside Roller Coaster

An RFP has been issued to construction companies interested in bidding on the removal of the now famous roller coaster.

Casino Pier has taken the first step towards removing its roller coaster that had fallen into the Atlantic Ocean and served as an iconic image of Hurricane Sandy's devastation of the shore, according to Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers.

At a recent council meeting, Akers said Casino Pier's owners had readied a 35-page Request for Proposals package, or RFP, and would be sending it out this week to prospective construction and demolition companies and was ready to start accepting bids to remove partially submerged steel coaster known as the Jet Star.

Details about the project and its time frame are sparse as the borough's involvement with Casino Pier's reconstruction is limited, Borough Administrator John Camera said. However, Seaside Heights recently approved a bid to rebuild the entire length of its boardwalk and is hoping to have it open to the public by May 10, putting pressure on Casino Pier to follow a similar deadline.

Attempts to reach Casino Pier officials about the coaster's removal were unsuccessful.

The Jet Star fell into the ocean after the partial collapse of Casino Pier during Hurricane Sandy. The image of the roller coaster in the Atlantic Ocean spread throughout the world on social media sites and was carried by media outlets online, in print and on television.

In the months that have followed Sandy, the coaster has remained standing tall, as if it were constructed from the bottom of the ocean to begin with.

In the days following Sandy, Akers told NBC 4 New York in an interview that he would have liked to see it stay, saying it would make "a great tourist attraction." He later backed off of those comments.

Recently, the coaster again attracted widespread attention when 38-year-old Christopher Angulo climbed to the top of the steel structure and unfurled a large American flag in, as he told WNBC-TV, "an act of patriotism."

Angulo was able to reach the coaster simply by paddling to it. For his efforts he was arrested and charged with criminal trespassing.

Though Angulo's actions appear to be isolated, the ease of accessibility to the coaster by water, as well as its precarious footing in the tide of the Atlantic Ocean, have made it necessary to remove the Jet Star.

Or how about 2am instead of 4am. Like the majority of towns. Theres gonna be dirtbags whereever you go just cuz you close bars at 12 doesnt mean it will eliminate all of the dirtbags. You want a true family resort go to point pleasant.

First of all, I don't think this should be deemed a "Breaking News Alert" - and I have felt that way about a few stories. Secondly I believe that the amount of money that has been approved to rebuild the boardwalk can be better used to help rebuild the lives of people who were really hard-hit by the storm.

I agree. This isn't breaking news. Breaking news is something that people need to know right away because it may affect them somehow right away.

Don't rebuild. It's going to happen again. The barrier island should be abandoned.

Natures signs were everywhere, why wasn't anything done about it, prior?
The beaches in Ortley were shorter than my back yard! Toms River was too busy counting the over inflated tax revenues and let that part of town get washed out. Plain and simple. Worst thing the people of Ortley did was to sign on with TR.

It is not the "Jet Star" ! The Jet Star coaster was taken down years ago,and replaced ,temporarily , by helicopter rides.

This was the "Star Jet".
I wish everyone, especially the media, can finally get the name right.

@Joesph Fekete, i dont know where people are getting "Star Jet" from, but the media and everyone else is right, it is Jet Star. I know because i've worked on Casino Pier's Property for the past 5 summers. Unless the Storino Family changed it back to Jetstar when they purchased it, it is Jetstar. You can look on Casino Pier's Facebook page as well where they call it Jetstar.

Joe is right! The original Jet Star was taken down in 2000. For a couple summers there was a helecopter landing pad there and joy rides were given. After a couple yeras a new coaster was put up called the "Star Jet". It's still a crazy sight to see a coaster in the water though...

Yes, you misunderstand. The owners of Casino Pier and their insurance company are paying to remove the coaster from the ocean. Not FEMA, not public taxes, not the borough of Seaside.

I only hope that the people who are in charge of the reconstruction of the boardwalk and Seaside Heights realize, that they have a "ONCE IN A LIFETIME" opportunity to change the sleazy, weekend party animal, young, rowdy, get drunk and piss in the streets reputation, that Seaside heights has been cursed with for 35 years and turn it in to a more upscale destination."Miami Beach,Pier Village", I'm not to optimistic

No I don't believe that it is right for homes to have to be abandoned. Not at all. I believe that any money should be put to rebuilding the homes and businesses of people affected by the storm. Especially the homes.

That should be the primary concern right now. Not removing a rollercoaster or worrying about whether an amusement pier or boardwalk (the boards themselves, not the businesses) should be rebuilt.

All these business have insurance just like homeowners. They can rebuild themselves. Do you know anything about Seaside and the boardwalk that has illegal European workers every year. What was it Russians last year? Doesn't that scumbag in the wheel chair own 90% of the stands. I say we clean up point to ortley and let seaside straighten it self out. Maybe a few nice bars and restaurants and it can be more like point. I grew up here and surf the peir a lot when there is not 100 people out. In the summer I am probably the only white dude without my pants around my ass and a dirty wife beater on. Sorry folks. I used to love the jungle... But the place is a dump.

It does need clubs, hemmingways, bamboo, etc. it does need rides and restaurants. I just hope they do it right. We have a clean slate. My biggest fear is that it takes a turn for the worst and there are twice as many section 8 housing. My buddies car got robbed twice in a month surfing at the pier. I don't know the exact element that attracts these scumbags but we need to step it up. It will always be a party spot, but we should target college kids. Not inner city trash.

It is not the landlords that are the problem - and is unlawful to discriminate. The homelessness problem is a State and County problem that they are dumping on Seaside b/c of the availability of low cost seasonal rentals. The opening of the bars (til all hours) before property owners have been able to safely secure structures makes me question the purpose behind some of these decisions. I hope the bar taxes are going to help support the required police presence.

We've had vacation property in SSH since the 80's. In my opinion if the Casino Pier is going to be rebuilt, then they should build it better. It seems to me the owners of the pier took the cheap way out in regards to the rides. The Star Jet was made of I steel, and not the more expensive and smoother tubular steel. same with the mouse. Look at Wildwood. Morey's spears no expense. Those are rides, and tell me that Wildwood doesn't attract more families than Seaside. Seaside has gone down hill. They should gear it more toward families, put in state of the art rides, and close those bars at a normal hour. They have an open slate. Do the right thing. By the way my homes are on Sumner Ave, and M Street. My home just off Ocean Ave was destroyed. I'm selling the lot because of the rif raff late nights during Summer. plus insurance isn't user friendly. I lost $150k. Better attractions equal increased property values

I heard a suggestion the other day that they should cut up the rollercoaster in small sections and sell it as memorabilia, I personally would love to buy a section have it framed with the image of the Jetstar sitting in the Atlantic. Money could be used for rebuilding purposes! How many others would love to own a piece of this iconic image I wonder?
