Seriously? The people who think its ok to raise our taxes beyond comprehension over the last five years while spending the proceeds on niceties like this and the softball fields are literally certifiable. Do you not see the record number of for sale signs and foreclosures? If the TR council has surplus that's one thing but to raise taxes just to frivolously spend our tax money on this is corruption at its finest. Please wake up TR and vote these "good old boys" out of office. They've taken this town from well respected to white trash central. (before you jump down my throat, I am not a candidate, and yes I actually voted for some of these members and I regret it every single day-but enough is enough)

In this economy, TR should've added on to the existing facitity, NOT built a new one. I'm so tired of the mayor and his buddies spending my tax dollars like drunkin sailors. DISGUSTING!!!!!

You could have neutered every stray pet in the entire state and be done with a homeless pet problem,for much much less.Acting like your helping the shelter when your really just expanding municipal cost is a all time low.for the record,Germany neuteres all pets and does not euthanize ANY just for being homeless,how many are killed down in toms river each year ? .. It's about time. Has any of you ever seen the old shelter. It's old outdated and would have cost millions to fix it, even if they could expand. Besides whose fault is it that we need a larger shelter, it's the people of Toms River. You let your pets run wild, become impregnated and they're dumped in the streets and picked up or dumped at the shelter or you adopt and abuse and have them taken away. If the people would have taken more responsibility for their pets this shelter wouldn't have been warranted. SHAME ON THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS.

From what I read in the article the 6.4 million project will also include expansion of the Municipal Court facilities and renovations to Police Headquarters and I agree with coalitees comment 100% about responsible pet owners.
On another note if the parents of today taught their kids responsible work ethics and respect of others property, there probably would of been no need to expand the Ocean County Jail that now house's quite a few of them.

I think we need an animal shelter more than we needed that ridiculous girls field on North Bay Ave. That was a waste of money.

Why don't you critics go get a breakdown of the monies to be spent.? Originally the animal shelter was to be built for 1.5 to 2 million. Read the past associated Patch articles.The wool hear is the fact that our TR good old boys may be more concerned with the court and police head quarter upgrades, and just trying to make this a publicly accepted pretty package. If you are passionate about abandoned animals, then we could use this shelter. The other four million?...I don't know. I say, let those going to court, stand in line outside in the cold and rain.

I'm a property tax payer, and I'm happy that the Township is actually spending money on CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS instead of paying for employees bloated wages and lavish benefits. Toms River Township employees are very well taken care of already. They make more than competitive wages, have an excellent benefit package, and receive penty of sick/vac/personal and/or comp time.

Capital improvements are for the benefit of everyone in the township (the new ballfields and Animal Shelter). Score one for the township committee, they actually did something smart.

The county shelter in Jackson is overcrowded already. The TR shelter is staffed with VOLUNTEERS to take care of the animals. They already have a few employees, I haven;t heard of hiring additional employees. You're making assumptions to try and validate your argument. Educate yourself.
