UPDATED: Bicyclist Struck by Automobile on Route 9 in Beachwood

Bicycle rider sustained "non-life threatening" leg and head injuries in Beachwood collision

Traffic on Route 9 in Beachwood was diverted during the early afternoon Saturday, in the aftermath of a collision between a car and a cyclist near the intersection of Route 9 and Beachwood Boulevard, said Sgt. Frank Melillo of the Beachwood Police Department's Traffic Safety Division.

The crash occurred at approximately 11:40 a.m. on Saturday, as a vehicle driven by a 26 year-old female motorist collided with a bicycle being operated by an 80 year-old cyclist. According to Sgt. Melillo, their names are not available for release at this time.

Soon after the accident, the cyclist was treated by the Beachwood First Aid Squad and transported from South Toms River’s Mathis Plaza to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for his injuries.

"The cyclist sustained what appeared to be a leg or ankle fracture, as well as a head injury. However, his injuries are not life-threatening and he is in stable condition (at the hospital)," said Melillo.

Melillo described that the driver was released from the scene, but could not comment on possible charges or the cause of the accident, since the collision is still under investigation. As a sergeant in the Traffic Safety Division of the Beachwood Police Department, Melillo is personally coordinating that investigation.
