Vice President Joe Biden visited Seaside Heights today to view damage caused by Hurricane Sandy - saying "this is a national responsibility" - according to the Associated Press.
“We have an awful lot of work to do,” AP quoted Biden as saying. He added, “This is going to be a long process. This is going to be an expensive process."
Chairman of the candidate screening committee for the Ocean County Democrats Kevin Barron discussed Biden's visit with Patch today.
"We heard some saying, [when President Obama] visited, that he was only here because he was campaigning. But here [Biden] is after the election is over. This proves those critics wrong," Barron said. "The President and Vice President are still spending that time here in New Jersey, and really do care about the residents of this state."
Biden also is scheduled to tour Hoboken today, according to the AP. A spokesman for the New Jersey State Police would only confirm for Patch that they were working with the Secret Service to "supplement and assist them" with Biden's visit today, but would not reveal specific details regarding his schedule.
President Obama visited storm-wrecked Atlantic City with Christie before the election. Two Obama Cabinet officers toured a Federal Emergency Management Agency facility in Middletown on Friday, according to the AP.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan acknowledged in their visit that it could take years to rebuild some areas wrecked by the superstorm, which killed more than 100 people in 10 states but hit New Jersey and New York the hardest, according to the AP.

What timing...who was the brilliant one in this administration who thought it was a good idea to visit...on a weekend...when homeowners are there trying to work on their houses! How ridiculous! We were there today and the streets were blocked off all the way down to island beach state park. We wanted to leave and had to wait for an hour until we could leave. He wasn't doing anyone any favors by coming down on a weekend...again, homeowners are off from work and want to get things done...not be incovenienced by this nonsense. JB - My bad. My comment was intended for the wunderkid, aka rwh. Walter - Actually, unless you have flood insurance, FEMA benefits do not even kick in with respect to replacement cost assistance. People are finding out the hard way that they had an obligation to act to get private flood insurance coverage. Don't know that I would call them "stupid." I think that with the government taking over EVERYTHING, many thought that they would just be taken care of in an event like this. Unfortunately, government picks its winners and losers. Unfortunately for waterfront and flood zone residents, it isn't them.

Obama did visit!!! Was in constant contact with Christie and came only days after the storm. Unlike Pres. Bush during Katrina, who didn't give a flying rats A$$. He went to New Orleans a week later. Only looked at the devestation from Air Force One. Did not even get out of the plane and talk to the people that were effected.
Rick
12:31 pm on Sunday, November 18, 2012
Obama also visited a week later. He got his parade into Atlantic City. Bush did a flyover because much of New Orleans was still flooded and if he had landed and driven into the city it would have caused a big disruption of relief efforts.
Remember, Bloomburg asked, or rather told, Obama not to come to New York because it would only hinder the clean up process.

The President is not providing the leadership here in NJ just as he is not responsible for the lack of leadership in Staten Island. The emergency response is on the local and state level and frankly, I think it's been pretty good in Jersey considering the magnitude of this storm. It will be up to us, here in Ocean County, to rebuild. To wait for the feds to do so will be to our detriment.

I don't think it's a Republican/Democrat issue on the VP's visit. I think that anyone who is going to divert resources in a disaster zone needs to do what they do from afar. Don't know whether anyone was on or near Fischer, Hooper or Rte 37 yesterday and today, but it was a traffic nightmare with people and construction crews making their ways on and off the island. Those folks needed to be on the island. Of all people, VP Biden needs to respect the work that needs to be done here and not distract one second of resources by being on the ground....unless he's an expert in flood remediation....which I am going to assume he is not. I would say the same thing to Cheney if he were to come or suggest they fly over the region.

Texas’ economy grew at a rate higher than the national average, and government job losses appear to be coming to an end. The state gained 264,700 nonagricultural jobs from September 2011 to September 2012, an annual growth rate of 2.5 percent compared with 1.4 percent for the United States. David, You know for a fact that all those Texans are working minimum wage jobs. Texas has a per capita income about the same as New Jersey.
And some people would argue that a minimum wage job is better than no job at all.

frank - If you're OK with fewer folks pulling the cart than those sitting in it, well I'd hazard to say that is not the America I knew as a kid. It is morphing into an unrecognizable, dependent, welfare nation. Works for some, but unfortunately not for the worker bees in this country. Additionally, please take the time to read my commentary before lumping me in with "moving truck" dialogue. I am disappointed Romney did not win. However, even he was not my ideal candidate. My philosophy is simple. Do not spend more than you take in. It's the manner in which I run my household & I would welcome leadership that shares that ideal. I do not need the federal government legislating my birth control, healthcare, solar initiatives, food choices, etc. I'm a big girl and can take care of most things on my own. My government is there to protect our nation and its borders, maintain roads, and respond in times of national emergency (e.g. Sandy). I think we have made it far more complicated than it truly needs to be. The most catastrophic policies are ones that promote multi-generational welfare and a failing educational system. I believe that Reagan said that if a foreign nation did to the American public education system what we ourselves have done, it would be considered an act of war. Our obligation is to leave our children a nation better than it was when we found it. That will not happen with the policies of this administration (PS...I wasn't a Bush fan either).

I don't care WHO comes here as long as they bring lots of media and press along with them! You know how long the American attention span is, all Lindsay Lohan has to do is pull one of her stunts and the devastation at the shore will be forgotten along with the attention of our plight at the Shore. Donations of food, money and clothing will dwindle and that must not be allowed to happen!

You are an idiot! It's the publicity of Biden or anyone else with the press tagging along that will bring what the shore needs. SG why NOT? do have any idea what these people are paying into all the govmt. funded programs that they get nothing in return from,? They Not only pay their property tax on the home that they spend at best 4 month out of the yr at, but they are also paying that on a primary home.... not to mention if they are able to keep up 2 homes what they most likly earn & pay the Fedl. government to keep FEMA going ITS THEIR $$$ they are NOT asking for a hand out( which they already support) they are only asking for what they have worked hard for generations to keep...

Most of the 'second homes' are not used by the owners four months out of the year. They are rented out during the summer months and that rent pays most if not all of the mortgage, insurance and taxes for the whole year.
And, don't you think priority should be given to the people whose primary residence was damaged. The people who own vacation homes still have a place to live.

My grand kids who are only 7 and 4 have donated a lot of their toys to the kids that have lost their toys. Out of the mouths of babes. My granddaughter did this on her own. So let's see Obama comes to NJ, takes time out to see what Christie needs and wants, Then Biden comes and it's after election to see what we need or want, I really don't like either of them BUT they came. Where was Romney and his Eddie Munster look alike? Romney kept on campaigning ( code word for partying) with those who might lead him to the Whitehouse. Meanwhile Obama cancels his campaigning schedule and comes here instead. That impressed this Independent, (I didn't vote for him, but I didn't vote for Romney either, love that write in feature in the voting booth). I used to not like Christie, but I've done a total 360 on that, I don't want him running for President in 2016, I want him to stay right here in NJ taking care of business in Trenton. Never thought those words would ever come out of my fingertips! It's not the party, it's the person, that's what us Independents know.

Joe - Obama canceled his campaign schedule after Sandy BECAUSE he was the president. To do otherwise, would have cost him the election. I wish he had the same good sense after 4 American embassy workers were massacred in the Benghazi attack. Instead, he chose to golf, attend a fundraiser in Vegas and appear on Letterman. Our president did not skip a beat on the campaign trail at that moment and now will not fess up to the fact that those embassy workers/former SEALS requested military assistance and were denied. He has about as much interest in getting to the bottom of that cover-up than he does in ever keeping a single campaign promise he made in 2008. But Americans will continue to settle for mediocrity.

Spooner - Thank you for reinforcing my point. They were at Dover 4 days later, unwelcome BTW by at least one of the Navy Seal's family, for yet...another photo op. When it came time to protect those men, however, Pres. Obama and his administration were absent leadership. So here we are post Sandy. Let's have a parade of dignitaries come down to the beach, tie up traffic, shake their heads in disbelief at the devastation, snap a few pictures and then leave. Whether or not the VP is on the ground or flies over the area in a helicopter doesn't make one bit of difference in the recovery. Nothing was accomplished by Biden's visit here. Again, we are talking about the VICE-president not the PRESIDENT. The folks in SSH are not an amusement ride. It's a beaten-up town with a lot of work to do and a lot of good people prepared to do it. To have roadways clogged up even further on a weekend permitting access for the first time in some parts was a hassle and frankly, self-indulgent.

If Hillary doesn't run in 2016 Biden will be the next president. I don't understand what all the hatred toward him is all about. What did he ever do to deserve that? It's amazing to me how many of you think he should be hauling out wet furniture from people's houses? How much did you haul out of your neighbors houses? I have a condo in lavallette that did just fine but all downstairs units were totalled. Upstairs units helped downstairs units haul it to the curb. That's what neighbors do. Instead of shouting from the rooftops take a ride over the bridge when you are allowed to and go help someone out. Let the politicians do what they are supposed to do. It's not the govt's responsibility to make homeowners whole. We all should have had insurance. FEMA is there for those who qualify. If you were fortunate enough to have a SECOND home the repairs are on you, not me.

He is condescending and rude and that was clear as day during the debate.... He has been, shall we say, lackluster in his performance as VP. He has failed in many of the tasks he has been put in charge of...
As far as helping neighbors, of course thats what we all did... even when we lost it all, we helped others. But as far as the govt role, they should have been better prepared for what was about to hit us... we ALL knew well in advance of this storm and yet FEMA didnt have enough water or supplies at the ready? It shows the lack of preparation by this administration to take care of the people.... plain and simple.... They should leave help to the private sector and charities because they seem to be able to better coordinate things.... just sayin ;)

I wonder if Mitt donated one dime of his offshore millions to help anyone who's sleeping in a shelter tonight? Maybe Biden should've postponed his visit and let those poor folks fend for themselves? Would that make you A-hole Repubs happier???

Somehow rich Republicans are evil but rich Democrats are good?
Eight of the ten richest members of Congress are Democrats.
Think Nancy Pelosi, Diane Feinstein, Jay Rockefeller, John Kerry, Frank Lautenberg.
And then there are all the liberal Hollyweird types that think the other people, rich or poor should support all the government spending, but they don't want to give up their money and lifestyle.
The average per capita income in the US is about 41K. I doubt any of them would want to live on that kind of money. They probably spend that much on their kid's birthday parties.

I personally am from neither party but to me its not about a party, its about the person and I have always seen more 'right wingers' at the places I donate my time and money to. I had no idea that Vice President Biden was coming to the Jersey Shore:
I started my Sunday morning as any other Sunday morning on getting two boys ready to leave our home for a normal Sunday breakfast at my in-laws.
As we were driving there my husband had on WOBM on the radio. Yes, we were listening to Bob Leive. There were so many topics that came up between the ride from Bayville to Island Heights.
There were local politicians mention to the big guys in the White House.
I actually said to my husband that you really never hear anything about what Vice President Biden is doing.
As, I left Island Heights this morning I told my husband to drive down to the Summit Ave. beach in Island Heights. We look out in the distance and we see 5 military choppers flying very low. I state to him. Thank God Christie is doing his job.
As I sit here tonight and watching the channel 2 news. I was wrong on my statement on Vice President Biden from my early comments this morning.
I thank you for coming to the Jersey Shore today and your job is just as important as the President of the United States..
Now it is time to rebuild our beautiful Jersey Shore and get this thing that Christie calls a new normal back to the real normal.
Thank Vice President Biden

And your Party Poopers couldn't win despite spending $577 million in campaign monies that may well have been better spent as fair share tax revenue and used to improve the state of infrastructure in this country. It isn't about the blacks or latinos it is about the green. What the GOP CONS can't swallow is the will of the people and yes the unions who voted in a levelling process that could not be bought by small groups of super-powerful people who thought they could make another presidential purchase as in George Bush Florida days. What the GOP CONS can't stand is the realization that they no longer wield enormous influence to reduce those who do not have the privilege of power to slaves in the hierarchy. Humanitarian concerns are beginning to chip away at autocracy. The Party of Mean lost. That is righteous and good.

This is a big mistake we are making, there is no winner. All will lose, as so will our children and all future generations. It is serious and time is running out if it hasn’t yet.

EVERY town along the NJ shoreline is going to be in BIG financial trouble very soon___both the Democratic and Republican dominated towns alike.
Property tax collections are going to go DOWN drastically because people do NOT pay real estate taxes on destroyed or entirely gone homes. Many towns will find their real estate tax revenue is going to be falling as much as 50% and at the same time township expenses caused by the storm are increasing fast.
Like it or not all of you Republican political cronies___we are all in this mess together. The more Federal attention we get__the better the chances are that our towns and our State will get some of the federal financial help it desperately needs. While no one was paying attention Gov. Christie sold close to $3 billion of bonds last week to help keep our state afloat and paying it's bills.. What we should all be thinking about in the shoreline communities is" How are we going to pay to keep our schools and police and road departments open and functioning when real estate tax revenue declines dramatically due to all of the destroyed properties that will no longer be paying any real estate taxes??????

Lay-offs, Just like when companies get in trouble and have to do. We need to lay off police, teachers, administrators... called cut backs, only keep what is absolutely necessary. Some of these towns have very small schools. Have one grade per grade level. It could be done. You can't expect one part of a town that was not hit to pay for another. Like Manasquan, Belmar, Spring Lake, etc....It just can't be absorbed. Get rid of all the extra teachers, reading, writing, specialist or in class support..let the grade teacher handle it all. That is how it was at one time, Also get rid of all the unnecessary Administrators, very top heavy for some of these small districts. I can almost guarantee you if you had someone come in from the county or state they can easily be able to make cuts that would not matter. Get rid of the overpriced athletic directors and assistants. I am sure you can hire someone for a lot less money to schedule games. There is some ridiculously overpaid employees that are not needed.

Doona-agreed. I am a fan of responsibility myself. If you were stupid enough to live by the beach without flood insurance then Boo-Hoo. No checks for the stupid.
You have to rebuild? Take out a loan and get a second job or sell you lot.
Bunch of Obama leeches looking for a gov't handout."
Go and tell that to the people who's homes were severely damaged.

You all fight and argue too much. You have a massive job of rebuilding ahead of you, having National recognition of your plight is a good thing, the rest of the U.S. does want to get behind you and is rooting for you (regardless of party affiliation). Instead of fighting, why don't you tell us how you are doing? Are you rebuilding yet? Tell us how you are, we all care, we want to see you rebuild, we want to see you united and strong - not bickering away like a bunch of babies. Stay Strong - The Boss said "rise up my fellow New Jerseyans, for we are all members of a confused but noble race." Stop fighting over stupid political things that are out of your control right now - stay focused on the job at hand - you have a long road ahead of you, united and stay strong!!! Please tell us how you are, how you are coping, when you can begin to rebuild, did anyone go see Biden? Wasn't Christi great on SNL?
Happy Thanksgiving!

Well, Marianne as posted earlier, I for one was very happy with the Texan linemen who restored my development's power after being without heat or electricity for 12 days. God bless Texas. We are doing okay, but pretty much walking in a dazed state. It is hard to absorb all of the destruction. I personally know about 20 people made homeless by this storm. It is really just hell with the one saving grace being the goodness that came from so many people in so many ways.

Pardon if someone else posted these sentiments, but ... I don't question the VP's sincerity. However, it would have been better to devote the cost of his "visit" to the rebuilding process instead of a PR event. Having the Governor come to the shore makes sense - he travels light (no jokes please) and has a direct role in rebuilding efforts. Having the VP or President do so appears unlikely to have any practical effect, and certainly does not justify the cost of transportation, security and the like.

Agree. I was on one of the beaches when the VP flew by. Like 10 Apache Helicopters. Felt like I was truly in a war zone. Don't think it was necessary!

Having Vice Prez come to disaster area sucks, vp not coming to disaster area sucks, disaster assistance sucks, no providing it, and not providing it quickly enough sucks too...federal aid sucks, medicare sucks and social security sucks and national defense sucks so to highways and bridges and government investment in pure and appied sciences, federal governemtn sucks and goverment sucks and states should do what federal government does because magic makes them both be able to do it better, but also makes it OK for them do it as if state government is not government, and thinking sucks the most unless it is done by the gut, which sucks.

I enjoy reading the OC Patch, particularly when the storm was heading Ocean City's way and it was the only "touch" I had with my "new" home. I have to tell you, I just think all of this back biting/fighting is awful. In an area where everyone needs to pull together and help each other all you can do is push each other down. What in the world is wrong with you people. And, you wonder why the government can't work together? I don't care if you are Rep or Dem -- get over it, and get on with life and rebuilding. Life is too short. The man I wanted to win may not have won, but I'm sure not going to cry over spilt milk. Put your energy into helping someone who needs it rather than tearing someone else down.

Granmommy - If you're looking for rainbows and sunshine in this forum, I might suggest a Hallmark store instead. We may banter, we may argue, we may even at times get rude with one another when expressing our political differences. But do not for one minute think that we are not there for each other in our disaster relief effort. In Ocean County, we roll up our sleeves when work needs to get done and we never ask "Who'd you vote for?" We'll get the job done and will rely on our own initiative and some help from our friends and neighbors. Make no mistake, we will rebuild our home town, and I may even go so far as to say that we will be better for the effort.

Obama had a meeting with Reverend Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson in the whitehouse? Really?
Maybe we shoud sit down with SNOOP DOG and OJ SIMPSON too?
Maybe we should start listening to Obama's reverend of 20 years... Reverend Wright? Since whites are evil.

We are recovering and rebuilding from a natural disaster (Sandy). It will take years. We may never recover from the man-made disaster (Obama II).

Yeaahhhh!!!!!
Man-made disasters like Obama suck, like his disasterous reign over the economic recovery including the stock market approaching near record highs, the import/export ratio flipping in our favor, manufacturing jobs coming back, the addition of millions of private sector jobs, restoration of our legitmate role of leader of the world, that the military flag officers quitetly agree that O is the best C-in-Chief since Eisenhower, blah blah blah - it all sucks, and lefty kool-aid talking points that happen to reflect reality suck too becasue reality sucks...losing sucks, and so does winning when the losers suck, and saying O will take away out guns sucks when he doesn't do a thing about guns, which really sucks, and socialism sucks especially the imaginary kind that never happened under Obama, but the real kind does not suck like hte military and SSI and medicare, and thinkin and facts and reason and pragmatism and making things better really really suck if one party benefits politically and, well, everything sorta sucks.

Donna - You must be investing in foreign markets because the US market tanked after the election. Been busy cleaning up here so I have not followed the trend this week, but my pension (100% self-funded BTW) has taken a BEATING. What I did hear is that there is an effort underfoot to have the feds take over Hostess. That would be the Hugo Chavez move of the century if that were to happen. Maybe a cheese factory next?!? Then we can truly all share in the government cheese.

...actually the Confectioners union has agreed to the Hostess company contract proposal. But that doesn't mean much when you look recent history. Even with past union give backs the company was still bleeding red ink? It's more about management than the unions. . .look at old GM and Eastern Airlines.

Donna G - Interesting that you add the caveat about the not catching up this week considering that again reality contradicts your points - the markets are up. And that goes without even getting into that other inconvenient reality - that short term fluctuations are meaningless. The fact that matters is that the markets have fully recovered while Obama has been in office. No amount of demagogueing, partisan fauz macro economics, or just plain hate soaked gut thinking changes that reality...

The markets are manipulated by the Fed want a better idea of how Obama is doing look at what the dollar is worth in GOLD ,it has lost over 50% of it's value in 4 years ...or look a what gas cost in dollars twice as much ...

right - unions suck, especially how they pulled the working class out of poverty which sucks too unless you are not impoverished, and workers' rights suck too cause workers suck and so do rights unless they are mine cause I am white and straight and affluent (none of which sucks and all of which is true, as it should be), and earning a living wage and earning a middle class and even upper middle class salarty sucks to because uniions made that possible by making employers have to compete with compensation packages with unions to get good workers, and so do benefits like health insurance and sick days and vacation days and overtime and 40 hr work weeks and workplace safety rules suck suck suck because unions made all of that happen throughout our economy....yeah - unions have sucked profits from owners so they could live a decent life for working well and hard...when all the time the owners could have had that extra money so they could save it and pass it on to their deserving kids....and it sucks that those middle class workers spend that money because it goes to the owners when they spend it and the owners save it etc...so why must the owner put it out there in the first place - so you see unions SUCK

Yeah - GOLD - the currency of the End Timers, anarchists, and just plain insanely nostalgic (nostalgia sucks unless it is reality like 50s sit coms)! You're right about the dimished value of gold - I tried to pay for my groceries with it the other day and the cashier said my gold is no good there!!! THAT SUCKS. And GASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS - Yes - Obama pumped that up alright...because only a manchurian anti-coloinalist, socialist commie fascist (they are synonyms now since O came to power) kenyan muuzilum has the magical power to manipulate and control the global pertro markets and fix fuel prices in the entire US! Dents is not dense - Dents makes sense!!!! And sense sucks. And so does Sam Samstie, btw

You don't pay in gold my friend you must exchange it for the worthless coin of the relm ....you would pay 800 worthless american IOU's in 2008 for 1 oz of gold and sell it today for 1785 worthless American IOU's ....or hold it for another year and receive a few thousand worthless American IOU's ....

Donna-capitalism is dead you say. . .I don't think so! Just look at the latest pronouncement from our restaurant industry...there going to cut their full time employees to part time, so they can circumvent ObamaCare penalties. Now if they were so socially minded, they would work with the state and Federal governments to insure affordable medical care for all their employees?
