Toms River Police: Multiple Incidents of Burglary, Attempted Home Invasion and Alarm Call

Various incidents this week

Unrelated incidents involving alarm calls, suspicious persons and burglaries were reported this week in Toms River at various homes in town.

In one incident Monday, a Brookside Drive home was burglarized by a suspect who broke in through a front window, police said.

Officer Scott Duncan investigated a burglary in the 700 block of Brookside Drive that reportedly happened while the home was vacant between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday.

The suspect removed a 100 pound black safe from the home that contained jewelry and cash, said Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy. He said an extra large t-shirt was left behind at the scene that did not belong to the victim.

Police have not released any suspect details. Detective Louis Santora is investigating. Anyone with information can call Santora at police headquarters at 732-349-0150 ext. 1276.

A Pheasant Hollow Lane home was the scene of an attempted burglary at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Police responded to an alarm call at a home in the Pleasant Plains secton of Toms River at 11:30 a.m.

Mastronardy said an investigation by Officer Steve Austin determined that the rear slider door was shattered by an unknown suspect who apparently was scared off by the alarm before entry was made. No proceeds were taken.

This attempted home invasion is in addition to a report on Old Freehold Road Wednesday, where Toms River police received a call about a burglary in progress at 1 p.m. near Silverton Road.

Police are searching for a man who tried to break into an Old Freehold Road home's back door Wednesday afternoon. The man was confronted by a resident who hit him with a piece of wood before the suspect fled through backyards.

The suspect is described as a white man about 30 years old, wearing a black cap, orange t-shirt, sneakers and blue gym shorts with white piping.

In addition, a resident reported a suspicious person was approaching residences Monday morning. The resident of the Landings development called police after a man approached her home in the morning asking if she had a landscaper, police said.

Mastronardy said the woman became suspicious and called police. Mastronardy encouraged any residents who see suspicious activity should call police at 732-349-0150.

Two words: Neighborhood Watch.
Start one in your area to prevent many of these daytime break-ins.

Yes the police still can't make any arrests. Thieves are running ramped in this town. How much longer until homeowners start questioning the police as to why they aren't holding up their end of the bargain?

Question the politicians who won't fund more cops on the street, while they use our tax money for their pet projects instead.

Dog barking is great deterrent and if idiot criminal continues, an early warning system while you arm up

It's not going to be long before these crooks start arming themselves and just shooting their victims while they rob them. It's coming, be prepared to fight back, if you don't want to defend your self with a firearm buy mace , it beats being dead.

OK I dont sleep nights every light in and out of my house is on every night. I'm so nervous. It can't be that they can't be caught if it is I wonder why? Can't be the law is talking and having coffee in wawa or parked in a dark in a softball field or anything. I wish Billy and 1guy were my neighbors. And no more "Buy Gold" stores. Them and these thugs are making money.Bet they got the fool that robbed top cop.

Sold house alarms for awhile. A large dog barking is the best deterrent. Statistics showed burglars preferred not to get bitten and would rather look for another house.
I have two dogs that bark and would bite. I also leave large chewed bones in my neighbors yards. If they don't hear a dog but see evidence of a large dog in the yard. They will give it a second thought. ;)

There also was a break in on Silverton Rd Sunday Sept 2. The burglars pried off the electric meter and waited for the battery back up to drain. So even if you have an alarm if there's no power to the phone no call is made. Check with your monitoring company. Many people have a "do not call for power failures between 7am and 10pm "because they think they will be home. If you forget about it and go away, no one will know. The thieves probably used gloves as no finger prints were found. Fortunately nothing appears to be taken. Probably the "lawn boy" scared them away. I agree with the dog idea! When you go away tell your neighbors, tell the alarm company and tell the police. They will make extra rounds while you are away.
