Couple Tied Up as 3 Men Invade Home with Handguns

Police say alert neighbor freed couple, in Rivercrest Manor section of Toms River

This article has an update, here: http://patch.com/A-xYwK

A Toms River couple was tied up by three men in ski masks armed with handguns who ransacked their Rivercrest Manor home before midnight, police said.

Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said a neighbor freed the husband and wife, victims of a home invasion robbery, after the neighbor became suspicious.

Mastronardy said three men, wearing ski masks and showing handguns, entered the rear of the home, rushed to the bedroom and awoke a 66-year-old husband and 56-year-old wife who were sleeping.

The couple was tied up for about 30 minutes, said the police chief, as the three armed men raided the home off Mapletree Road.

The men fled in two vehicles, a witness reported to police. The witness, Mastronardy said, was checking his mail from his mailbox at the end of his driveway and noticed suspicious activity and called police.

The neighbor then entered the home and found the two victims tied up, and freed them. Mastronardy said no injuries were reported and the couple refused medical attention.

The police chief said a large amount of cash and jewelry was stolen.

No description of the three men or the two vehicles was immediately available.

Toms River Police Detectives Louis Santora and Roger Hull are investigating along with the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department.

Anyone with information can contact police headquarters at 732-349-0150 ext 1276.

People....Before the Second Ammendent is abolished (if this pig Obama is reelected). Go to your local police department, fill out an application for a firearm permit, buy a handgun, then shoot your intruders. If enough criminals are shot maybe they will think twice about entering anyones home.

I will not be a victim of any intruder, My intruder will be removed in a body bag....NOT ME!

Get with the picture folks, crime is not going to go away!

Time to fight for more police...response times are AWFUL, crime is up...yet everyone still complains about new police cars, and taxes...with the retirements that are going on, that will open up some money, however maybe we should approach the mayor and council and fight for the cash we supposedly don't have available to the township but is going to an $8 million dollar animal shelter...honestly human safety is more important, maybe animal rescue will increase because of the crime going up...just sayin.

More police is not the answer. The police we have now need to step it up. Our police force has more personnel than the majority of towns in this state yet our property crime is way above the state average.

None of these criminals who are stealing from houses seem to be getting caught. It sends a bad message loud and clear.

Easy one first: Anyone who works evenings or second shifts checks their mailbox at midnight, among other people. Anyone who forgot to check during the day, maybe?

Now, about the gun thing: I have to agree that, in a situation like this, with three guns ready to shoot you, waking up and firing would likely get two people shot - ONE of the intruders, and the homeowner. It sucks that this happened to these people, but at least they didn't get physically hurt.

The trick is to be woken out of your sound sleep before someone has a gun in your face. A dog with a loud bark is a great early warning system. Bad guy(s) may leave at that point. If not, at least you are awake when the glass breaks. You'll have time to defend yourself. The Fox News crack is ignorant. The criminals could care less if you watch CNN, MSNBC or Fox. There are liberal and conservative victims. There are probably less “2nd Amendment supporting” victims because, well they have guns (duh). You guys who rely 100% on the police will be stunned to find out that they may arrive in time to take your statement but will not be there to defend you. That's why they call it "self-defense".

George

10:58 am on Friday, September 21, 2012

Why are you criticizing the neighbor who got help for the tied-up victims? Shut up and start a Neighborhood Watch in your area to PREVENT some of the crimes, so shooting won't be necessary.

All you tree-hugging yuppies are so smart, I guess you and the neighborhood watch could shoot rubber bands at the masked men holding the gun to your heads. Sheep is not the word for you people, "PUNK" is a better word. Forget the second amendment, how about our god given right to defend ourselves. Fight fire with fire, lets see how tough these burglars are when they are looking down the barrel of a 12 GAUGE shotgun with double 00 buckshot in it. And YES a gun is the answer when someone is holding a gun to my familys heads.

I moved to TR two years ago and thought it was a nice place to live. Fast forward to now - We can't wait to sell our house and move out of here! We have lived in places all over the county and this is by far the most unsafe I have ever felt. It has gotten to the point where I don't feel safe to have my windows open in my house, unless I am in that room. I am not sure what it is going to take for the town to recognize they have a huge crime problem, but they need to take notice. We have had our car broken into and have already purchased serveral weapons to defend our home - and we are not the only ones on our block that have done this. It is sad that it is literally going to take someone (or a few people) getting killed until something gets done.

This should have been a wake up call but sadly it probably wasn't. All it has proven is once again criminals can run wild and get away with it.

One of my worse fears is a home invasion, although I wonder why this couple was randomly picked? Not everyone leaves large amounts of cash around, so it seems like they knew these people and what they had in the house. It still doesn't ease the idea of knowing the home was invaded with gun-welding masked men.

Suggestions to residents is to keep a camera handy and if you see one of these unsdesirable suspicious types get a picture and get it to law enforcement. There is no doubt that some of these people have done multiple crimes in the same areas and some of our citizens have seen them closeup and might be able to be positively identified.. Law enforcement is working to investigate these incidents but they need our help. We all need to be working as informants for them. The hard facts are that times are not gonna be getting better anytime soon and there is no doubt that more of these breaking and entering, burglary and worse felony crimes will be happening.

I saw a drunk driver on Hooper, hitting the curb, all over the road, it was 3pm and he could've killed somebody, and when I called the TR Cops the dispatcher seemed annoyed that I would even call about this. We saw the car pull over and the two guys went into the OC Mall Applebees and sure enough, the cops never came even though I told them exactly where they were.

I'm with you tr resident . People better start smarting up and stop being babies , teach your whole family everything about a gun . Go to shore shot pistol range and ask for rich Militano . He will give your whole family lessons in guns then you will feel better to know your whole family can protect them selves . I have two daughters and my wife we all went for lessons long time ago . Someone enters my home and thinks there gonna tie us up they will be leaving in the body bag I can assure you that . Go over these kind of situations with your family and equipt your home for the intruders . Anyone over fifteen can handle the pistol if trained . Have to be trained to know how dangerous the gun is and respect it , then no problems . Police are not gonna do shit . They are called after the fact . And besides it the cop shot someone the get punished for it like the beach wood cop got criticism for shooting that dirt bag that pulled the gun on him . Protect yourself in your own home . For now it's your right

Re apply. As long as your fid card is still valid. Like if you moved from another town and did not update it. Go apply for 6 permits just in case you find something else you want. Please let the NJ2AS know if there is any paperwork besides the 2 forms required by the State Police. We have already made over 20 towns come into compliance with the paperwork laws. Next we need to deal with townships taking over 30 days to issue fid cards and permits. We need to stand up for ourselves. And everyone here posting pro gun, join the NJ2AS. We are actually making a difference in NJ, where "other" associations dont give a rats about NJ.

When I was visiting my dad in the hospital every day for 8 straight days, I would often get home well past midnight, checking my mailbox when I did. It may be unusual in one's everyday life, but it is not something unheard of. I agree that we shouldn't be criticizing the mail-getting neighbor. If anything, we should be thankful he was checking his mail at that hour *AND* that he didn't just turn his cheek and shrug it off as nothing.
This is very scary, but it also seems to be a planned out attack with targeted victims. Who knows how they knew there was so much money in that house.
The types of crime I usually read about on this site are the types of crimes that are going on everywhere - Toms River simply isn't immune to it. You just have to do what you think you have to do to stay safe - get dogs, install alarms, get a gun - that is up to the individual. I still feel safe in this town and my neighborhood - though I am on the lookout for myself and my neighbors...being a certified night owl, I am typically awake when most people are asleep!

Get a home security sign and put it in your yard it's a good deterant you don't really need the system the sign in most cases move the perp to the next house. and yes I also have a system it's call Ruger. for the back of the house and S&W. for the front.
