UPDATE: Crime Scene Tape Surrounds APK Towing Route 37 Business

Lot in Lacey Township also guarded by county officers

A large lot filled with dozens of automobiles and wrapped with crime scene tape, located on West Lacey Road in the Bamber Lake section of Lacey Township, was being guarded by officers from the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office this morning.

Sources confirmed that this is the site that APK Towing, the Toms River company that has been accused of towing cars from private property in Seaside Heights, as well as price gouging, has been storing cars.

APK Towing's Route 37 and Coolidge Avenue location was surrounded by crime scene tape and under police guard Thursday night.

The move is the latest in an investigation into the Toms River company, which was was reportedly only instructed to remove vehicles from the borough that were impeding the cleanup effort in the aftermath of tropical storm Sandy.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office issued a press release Thursday stating that it is fielding complaints from residents in regards to the activities of a towing service known as APK Towing of Toms River.

“While it is not our usual policy to comment on pending and ongoing investigations, we are asking that anyone with information regarding this business, or anyone who has received a bill from this business related to services rendered in Seaside Heights, to please contact the investigators assigned to this matter: Detective James Conroy or Detective Mark Malinowski at (732) 929-2027," said Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford.

Patch will update as more information becomes available.

What really needs to be investigated is who in Seaside authorized the towing contract to APK in the first place, and whether a percentage of those towing fees, if any, was to be split with the borough.

I hope this guy (owner Mathew Zacaro) cuts a deal and tells the prosecutor who he was paying off and how much. However since Gerge Gilmore (the Ocean County Republican Chairman) is also the Seaside Heights borough attorney and has his finger prints all over this scandal, I expect the towing guy to fall on the sword and protect the corrupt Ocean County Political Structure. Why doesn't the New Jersey Attornry general or the Federal Prosecutor get involved? That is the only way to get to the bottom of this mess. Remember, Ritacco only got caught because the federal prosecutor was invloved. He was never investigated by the Ocean County Prosecutor.

Chuck, the NJ Attorney General will not get involved becasue Ocean County (i.e Geroge Gilmore) help elect Gov. Christie. Ritacco was invloved in insurance fraud, hence the feds getting involved.
It would be nice to see all of the cronyism come out into the light of day because of the storm, but these guys are good at hiding. And you are right about the towing guy falling on the sword. He'll take one for the team, and benefit from it some time down the road.

The only catastrophe here is that you are allowed access to the internet. There is no slander. Slander would have to be a false statement, and how do you know if the charges being made against the company right now are false? The company is being investigated, and if found guilty they will hopefully be charged to the fullest extent of the law for price gouging.

A Toms River-based tow company has reportedly admitted to price gouging Seaside Heights car and boat owners in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Late Thursday, a representative for APK Towing admitted to News12 that prices were too high and customers who've already retrieved their cars and/or boats will be refunded. The company has also reportedly agreed to charge a flat rate of $250 for anyone who had their car towed from Seaside Heights during Hurricane Sandy and the nearly two-week lockout following the October 29 storm.

They are still saying they didn't remove from private property, but the photos I've seen make them liars, as well as admitted criminals (price gouging).

You try to justify stealing someones car because it doesn't run and they didn't have the money to get it fixed? I guess you are right. We don't have the right to assume that something left on our property won't be stolen by a POS.

I agree with Tina nothing should be paid if the vehicle was taken from private property. When the police authorize a tow they have to follow the amount stated in the code above. Why $250? For the vehicles that did need to be removed (not on private property) why not waive all fees except the $105. This company used to be owned under another name. GRONES got sued years back for not adhering to the toms river township codes. I found price rite towing to be legit, and always followed the fee schedule. Get you insurance companies involved, they have attorneys act on your behalf

Only problem with the ordinance you posted is I am pretty sure that with the "state of emergency" that was declared by our Governor, all laws were subject to being ignored since it was an emercency. That is why your polliticians lied and said it wasn't safe to return to your homes (an abuse of your constitutional rights to liberty and property). As long as they lied about the safety issues they could maintain there emergency powers to steal and abuse the residents rights.

Maybe, but this is what is supposed to be followed when it is an authorized tow (by police) unauthorized is when you call to have a vehicle towed ie. Breakdown, then they don't have to follow this. Either way it is terrible, this happens all the time. Insurance companies caught on about 5 years ago, and made them adjust charges, or paid so the cutover could get car out, then sued tow yard. That is what is happening with some of the apk autos. They were paid in full by a carrier, then the carrier will go after them.
