UPDATE: Police Release Surveillance Footage of Elks Lodge Robbery

$1,000 stolen during incident late Tuesday night

Toms River police are searching for the suspect they said robbed the Toms River Elks Lodge while armed with an automatic handgun late Tuesday night.

Officers responded to the lodge at 600 Washington St. where the 70-year-old male bartender and a 66-year-old female Elks member said that a man armed with an automatic handgun stole $1,000 after a brief struggle near midnight, said Chief of Police Michael Mastronardy.

"During the struggle the female hit the suspect with a large bottle of alcohol," the chief said. "Neither of the victims received injuries."

The suspect is described as a white male, 6 feet 1 inch tall with a heavy build, curly dark hair and was wearing a dark three-quarters parka, dark skull cap and a blue and white scarf covering his head, Mastronardy said. The suspect's age was not given by police.

Toms River Officer Chris McDowell and K-9 Officer Steve Eubanks are investigating along with Ocean County Sheriff's Department Detectives Randy Petrick and Roger Hull, Mastronardy said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Bureau Capt. Bruce Burgess at 732-349-0150, ext. 1200, the chief said.

Good description of the suspect, with one glaring ommission. I guess in the world we live in, it isn't politically correct to give the race.

Ken- You need to read the comment from the editor. They added race after my post (your apology is accepted). I never said he was dark. The reason for giving a description is to ask the public to help identify the perp, so race would also be helpful, no?

Asbury Park Press reports that the 66 year old female lodge member hit the suspect on his head with a large bottle of alcohol. Good for her.
No specifics needed like whether it was Wild Turkey or Southern Comfort.

That old babe's got a pair on her. Hitting a guy with a bottle of booze when he's got a gun takes balls. Don't mess with her.

They are the nicest people. Fed so many families for free on Thanksgiving. I hope they catch the guy. I have seen some tough ladies on Bingo night maybe it was one of them. Good for her!

Greg,

I think you meant to say that he had a semi-automatic handgun. If he had an automatic handgun, that'd be very surprising, as they are quite rare.

He correctly identified the weapon used in Wednesday's robbery as a semi-automatic. He does appear to know the difference so it seems like a typo, but it is worth pointing out as it does make a difference.
