Freeholders Rankled By Newspaper's Criticisms

Kelly, Vicari say claims they have done nothing are baseless

The Ocean County Board of Freeholders reviewed plans on Wednesday to seek bids for retrofitting two more stormwater basins in the county, during the bimonthly preboard meeting in Toms River.

The two basins -- one along Vermont Avenue in Toms River, the other at the intersection of North County Line Road and Jackson Mills Road in Jackson -- are the newest in a series of basin retrofit projects the county has done to help create a filtration system that lessens the impact of rainwater runoff on Barnegat Bay.

The county is estimating the retrofits will cost $1 million, with the county splitting the cost with the state Department of Environmental Protection, county engineer Frank Scarantino said.

Citing the stormwater basin projects as just one example, Freeholder John P. Kelly took the opportunity to blast a newspaper editorial over its criticisms of the board.

"How dare they say we don't care about Ocean County?" Kelly said. "We were one of the first counties to build these basins, to protect Barnegat Bay.

The editorial, which appeared in Sunday's Asbury Park Press, endorsed Democrats Joseph Grisanti and Pat Barndt in Tuesday's election for two freeholder positions, currently held by John C. Bartlett and Director Gerry P. Little.

"How dare they say we don't do enough to fight for Ocean County?" Kelly said. "Where are they when we are meeting with the commissioners, pushing for widening of Route 9?"

Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari said there have been active efforts to block any attempt by Ocean County to get funding directed to the widening of Route 9 by the state Department of Transportation, which has responsibility for the road.

Kelly said that during a conversation with one commissioner, he learned that commissioner was under the impression the county wanted Route 9 widened to three lanes in each direction.

"He was surprised to find out it was only one lane each way," Kelly said.

Little said that while the county's road crews clean stormbasins throughout the county each year, storm drains along the state highways through the county -- Routes 9, 70, 37 and 35 -- go untouched, resulting in flooding during heavy storms and sending pollutants into Barnegat Bay.

"There seems to be a confusion between what's the county's responsibility and what's the state's responsibility," Vicari said.

"The state should be doing more," Kelly said.

"Maybe if newspapers disappeared our recycling crews would have time to do other things," Freeholder James Lacey said, half-joking.

Bartlett, Little, and all the rest of the Freeloaders are RINOs who advocate for higher spending and raise taxes year after year. They are playing people like you for suckers who buy into their blatantly false conservative rhetoric. This libertarian-minded voter is going to support their Democratic opponents, as it is hard to imagine them doing any worse than Georgie Gilmore's puppets have done in their decades on the board. Attracting businesses to this part of the state should be a top priority, and they haven't done anything to that effect in all their time of cashing a paycheck on our dime. And they're dragging their feet on the one project that this area really could benefit from (the long-in-gestation M-O-M rail line). But they think nothing of throwing down $50 million or so of our dollars to add an unnecessary expansion to the county jail just to house people who mostly aren't menaces to society. That's pathetic.

I doubt anyone is worried that the two, the Dems sacraficed to run for County Freeholder against Bartlett and Little will win. Matter of fact no one even knows whom they are. The reality is if the polls are correct, Barlett, Little and yes Paulhemus are going to win in a very big way. I think even the Dem org got sick pf Rosen. Too bad Armstrong has zero shot. Bad year to run in very Red Ocean County.

I think it's unfortunate that very red Ocean County is too blind to see that every single "Republican" on the Board of Freeloaders is actually a tax-and-spend liberal Democrat in all but party affiliation. We had a chance to elect Traditional Republicans of Ocean County, who ran on the Steve Lonegan line back in 2009 and advocated a pro-business fiscal conservative platform, and ran strong campaigns pointing out the many flaws of the Ocean County RINO Organization. Alas, they received no media coverage, and were only able to muster about 30-40% of the primary vote before disappearing into obscurity, with their website vanishing as well. I still refuse to support any of these hacks even in the primary, and write in former TROOC candidates instead. It's a shame that no one is posing any real challenge to these career politicians who do absolutely nothing of any worth, and it's also disappointing that the local Democrats haven't challenged the Freeloaders anywhere even close to the way TROOC did. They have the platform and the ability to make a difference, but they're just not proactive enough.

(smile) - wait a day or two, LBI ness...something's up. Get to know Scott Neuman and Tracy Caprioni, Democratic Republican candidates for Freeholder.

There's a suit pending - and the R's have already essentially thrown in the towel - that 1.) restores our party name to the ballot (first amendment issue), and 2.) undoes the two-party shell game played with the ballot positions in all of the counties. Two other independent congressional candidates are coming out to endorse Scott and Tracy, as well. You DO have a choice...and it's a good and decent one, for a change.

The voters should vote everyone out and vote in new no matter who is on the ballots... just keep that cycle up until they all get the hint...We need to stop the double and triple dippers at all levels. Stop giving or making jobs up for their friends or other ways around paying someone who has no experience or really does not deserves the positions in which is given. They are not for the kids or public. They are just a bunch of freeloaders who deserve to be taken down.

It is funny how when the leeches are ready who lived off the system move to all the other different states once they retire. They don't even stick around the same state that they used and abused. Thats the chutzpah of a politican that's been in office far too long.

It's unfortunately that the newspapers, through their obvious liberal bias, are no longer trusted as an unbiased news source. When they go after a republican, which they should do in the case of Ocean County freeloaders, their coverage is suspect.

Newspapers, no matter what part of the paper it's done, should never endorse a candidate. I don't care it's the opinion section, its unseemly and forever brings into question their motives for "exposing" a candidate or party they do not endorse. But they don't see it that way.

Readership and circulation are down for all news print media. Look at Newsweek, dropping their print magazine and disappearing into the internet. They bought this on themselves.

So, yes, Ocean County politics, as run by the GOP, is as corrupt as any in the state. They've been in power far too long, and the Democrats bring nothing to the table to prove themselves as a worthy replacement. GOP-isms ... Cronyism, favoritism, nepotism ... Will be replaced by the smae Dem-isms ... The GOP needs to be fundamentally changed. A classic example ... Trotting out Polhemus as sheriff. He's on more state pension plans, pulling in more salary from multiple level of state government, and handing out political jobs to those who toe the party line. Remig from Point Boro as a prime example.

It all stinks to high heaven.

Da Poppa,

The Asbury Park Press has an "obvious liberal bias"? The paper endorsed George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004. What planet are you living on? Also, journalism does not mean objectivity - actually, objectivity (which is merely reporting) is the opposite of journalism, as journalism is probing and investigative by nature. If you want objectivity, go watch the soulless reporters on the alphabet news networks.

@Fawkes I won't argue a known fact ... Main stream media and their news organizations on the whole are liberally biased. Two endorsements do not make a balanced, unbiased news organization. And I wasn't specifically calling out APP as biased, but the whole main stream media, with very few exceptions. And my point was (which was totally missed by you, probably because you are "on another planet") the biases shown by the media has led to their downfall. Readership, subscriptions, viewership are all down. Those are facts.

I watch none of them, and I haven't read the APP since November 2010, the last time my son's high school soccer team was mentioned. I haven't watched a news show for a longer period of time.

You can make the distinction between journalism and news reporting, but the MSM cannot. THAT is their downfall. So they can point out corruption and malfeasance, but until they stop their obvious shilling for politicians and party platforms, they will never again be taken seriously as "news" organizations. Change the name of newspapers to Journals, label the paper as opinion and have at it. It will not stop the decline in readership. They've irreparably damaged their reputations long ago.

APP's current editor, Hollis Towns, wasn't on board at the time of the Bush endorsements. Since he has joined the paper, I have noticed a strong swing in the direction of liberal Democrats as far as endorsements are concerned. This could just be a coincidence, but I'm guessing that it's not. They even always endorse the most leftist Republicans in primaries as well. In the coming days, I fully expect them to support Ballot Question #1, a $750 million bond that our state simply cannot afford but that our electorate, oblivious to our state's financial struggles, will probably support anyway (recent polling shows 72% of voters in favor of it).

Fawkes, I'll defer to Rufus as to the current state of the APP editorial board and news slant. Again, you focused on the APP, when I've stated, now for the THIRD time, I'm lumping APP in with a vast majority of the news media. They show their bias and refuse to admit, even going so far as to try to pass themselves off as unbiased. Me? I don't think I've stated anything in my postings that would hide the fact that I am a conservative, registered Republican and disappointed and dismayed at the state of the GOP. They are RINOs, from Christie (whom I voted for) to the county GOP or my local "Republican Club" of Point Boro, which I will never vote for. I've hid nothing nor stated anything to give the appearance of being anything other than a conservative.

You, on the other hand, by your defense of the APP show an obvious bias towards towards the organization/publication. I'd go so far as to say you either work for the Press, or know of someone who does. Otherwise, why defend something so vigorously spewing half truths and flat out lies.

I claim no vast conspiracy, but I point out what everyone knows and understands, and even the media admits to on occasion .... they are liberally biased. The APP took a hard left after the Ganett takeover. Others have posted it, verified what I've said in their own words, but you rail on me and my postings. You're obsessed, with me and defending the APP, is there any wonder anyone would assume that you're associated with the Press? I never once specifically attacked the APP, but rather I included them within my criticisms of the news media in general, but your pee-brain can't process that information, you're myopic and can't process the subtle difference. You think you're opinion matters, but because you can't state it clearly and succinctly and you're unable to comprehend what others, more intelligent than you, are saying you expose yourself as ignorant and unworthy to be included further in this discussion.

But please two things: be careful what you wish for in change, it may not be to your liking; and don't use the APP for any validation. Before you try to give them ANY credibility, read their "articles". They tend to be incomplete, less than accurate, and mindlessly slanted. Most of their editorials seem to lack any semblance of sense and are free of any logic. I think if you took a poll here will we'll say the APP is good for only two things. Ocean County voters would support Osama bin Laden & Adolf Hitler if they ran as Republicans. That little letter next to their name means everything to them. It's apparently all they care about. They will buy into all the gobbledygook, the false rhetoric, and the empty promises ... while completely overlooking the fact: while passing themselves off as conservatives, every single Georgie Gilmore-backed "Republican" is really just a tax-and-spend liberal from the way they raise taxes every single year to the way they have countless boondoggles that they spend money on (most offensive: over $50 million for an expansion of the Ocean County Jail). They have run an anti-business agenda where they and their friends gorge themselves on our dime, and they have long been the beneficiaries of an ignorant local media and incompetent opposition that is probably working for them (i.e. "Wyatt Earp", head of the Ocean County Democrats). Hopefully the advent of Patch will open some eyes to this corrupt group in power, and perhaps the recent Democratic bias at the Asbury Park Press may help us replace some of the parasites in control. Gilmore has all kinds of ties to Ritacco ... I'm sure if you dig around enough, you can find some dirt on him and his loyal puppets.

He has a barely-show job in Brick that he is completely unqualified for. Before that? It was job to job to job in republican controlled towns. The Freeholders quoted in the article kept touting all they have done for Ocean County. What have they done? What have any of them done except collect paychecks from the public and build up their pensions. It's over. There is no hope. These leaches are here to stay. It's very sad.

"How dare they ....." The whole point of journalism is to report things and often that rubs the feathers of those on high the wrong way. Newspapers also write editorials and that is a traditional part of the package.

News reporting has gone astray in recent years and become more and more political in tone but the smart ones do try to walk that center line because from there other opinions can be promulgated. And by attempting to stay neutral (which is tough to do) successful news outlets are providing spring boards for comments that put some articles up for challenge.

It's all part of the healthy free speech we have and we and newspapers, should "dare."

People in office ought to expect criticism and if they can't respond with facts that overwhelm the original writer's criticism, so be it. Most of us are getting tired of pat-you-on the back stories and give the results politicians have been providing us, criticism is in order.
