UPDATED: Toms River In The Dark; More Than 38,000 Without Power
Outages reported throughout township; trees down

More than 22,000 Toms River residents were without power, Jersey Central Power and Light reported at 4 p.m. Monday. By 9 p.m. that number had grown to 38,000 Toms River customers.
Between downed trees and branches, broken power lines and blown transformers, a large percentage of Toms River was in the dark as Hurricane Sandy's winds continue to pelt the area into Tuesday.
The power outage took traffic light power with it, as malfunctioning lights were reported at Route 37 and 166 early Monday and then at Route 37 and Fischer that afternoon.
East Dover grappled with power outages throughout the day into night, as large portions of town: East of Fischer Boulevard, Yellowbank Road to Indian Hill, Vaughn to Windsor Avenues all went without electricity.
Both Silverton along Kettle Creek and Holiday City at Silverton saw widespread power outages.
Multiple trees and wires are down in downtown Toms River. "It was like a maze getting home," one local resident said.
What was described as a "massive" tree blocked Hooper Avenue Monday afternoon, a few blocks south of St. Joseph's Church.
Overnight into Monday, customers in the East Dover section along Fischer and Coolidge had reported power outages to Toms River Patch.
Toms River Office of Emergency Management officials warn of ongoing power outages as well as flooding beginning Monday and continuing after Hurricane Sandy departs.
JCP&L also warned customers to plan for extended power outages.

From JCP&L: Customers can call 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877) to report their outage or click the "Report Outage" link on www.firstenergycorp.com. Customers should immediately report downed wires to their electric company or local police or fire department. Customers should never go near a downed power line, even if they think it's no longer carrying electricity.

Holiday City (Berkley section) HAS power as of 6:40 PM. Highly unusual, we usually lose power at the drop of a hat. We're very lucky this time -- so far.
Remember to check on elderly neighbors and relatives when the storm is over....

Pleasant plains. Near 9/571....no power since 3. My neighbors tree came down..blocked us in..resting on wires....until someone gets that tree cut away..no power in near future..

Most cities have suspended rescue and fire until tomorrow. Wait for the professionals. Stay inside until at least daylight.

I'm near the Mall and so far, rain hasn't been an issue, wind has. Many folks are without electricity. I would think the area safe, other than for down trees and wires.
