Resident Seeking Help After Storm Affects Basement

Looking for assistance with repairs and water and mold removal

A Toms River resident who saw her home drastically affected after a heavy storm is looking for assistance with repairs after the basement foundation shifted.

The female resident, who is unable to return home due to damage there, is looking for someone to donate time and materials or provide repair services at a low cost, in order to fix her home.

After heavy rains earlier this month, the basement foundation shifted, leaving a gap in the home that ushered in water and mud.

With no power to the home, the cost of locating a generator and a sump pump or wet vac to aid in the clean-up and repairs is proving burdensome, said the resident.

"This is an emergency but I just can't do this on my own," said the resident, who asked to remain nameless. She said the emergency is compounded by attempts to work with her insurance provider and local aid agencies, but is turning up few answers.

As a result, she's asking the community for help, and hopes someone will come forward to assist a senior citizen on a fixed income facing a crisis at home.

She's been quoted by contractors that the job would take several hundred dollars, but her fixed income only allows for $100, and she's worried the repairs may never be affordable.

"I'm also looking for emergency housing," she said. "This is a plea for help. I don't know where to turn."

She's hoping anyone with an interest in helping or access to repair equipment can email cama4664@aol.com

Where are all the angry men who sit home and post nasty comments all day, now that they could do some good for a change?

I am the woman in question here. I am not asking for anyone to do any repairs. I am only looking for someone with the body strength that I do not have at 66 years of age to vacuum out my basement for me. I can pay $100 for someone to do that for me, but not the $4000 I was quoted, since I live on Social Security. I am not asking for any repairs to be done, that was incorrect. I was able to find a shop vac, I just need a generator and a manly man before the mold creeps up into the living floor. And yes, I am now homeless so I have been trying to find emergency housing of course! I have always taken care of myself and paid my own way! But now I've been displaced until this insurance mess is settled and they are doing nothing to help me. I hope the people here with all of their negative and judgemental comments never have to have this happen to them. I am not indigent, on welfare, food stamps, etc. however if I WERE, I would get all kinds of help. I am not looking for anyone to donate materials to 'fix' my home. That was incorrect. Just someone to vacuum out my basement. This has been overwhelming for me.

DT is right. This will cost more than "a couple of hundred" dollars. I think it will cost of a couple of thousands of dollars and a backhoe. From the pic, this is not neglect. Hydraulic pressure mixed with mud packed a powerful punch.

What is wromg with you family? Can't they help you? Do you or do you not have two healthy sons and two healthy daughter-in-laws? And, don't tell us that your daughter-in-laws have to take care of your grandchildren. We feel sorry for you but, at 66 you are not that old and too infirmed to push a shop vac! If you are then perhaps you should sell the property and move into a senior village where all you have to do is worry about a small parcel or if you cannot handel a piece of property that is that small maybe you should go to an assistd living place.

Some of you sound so mean and cold hearted, not neighborly at all. I sure hope that Carol finds some help. Good luck

I live in Dallas - but hail from Toms River. I love the Patch, especially the Comments. If I was still in Ocean County, then yes, I would help - I really mean that.

If one person gets any type of assistance from this town then all those affected better get assistance too. My home was flooded 2 weeks ago and insurance won't cover even half the cost of repairs. I've been homeless since then while starting my senior year of college. Maybe if toms river added in sewage systems within my neighborhood I'd have a place to feel safe in. Unreal
