Last Chance: Final Downtown Car Show Wednesday

Hot rods, suped-up coupes to make your heart race on all cylinders

You may think it ugly. You may wonder what automotive manufacturers were thinking.

But to me, the El Caminos, the Rancheros, the Caballeros of the world are things of beauty.

A V-8 under the hood in a Chevelle front end. The back hauling some cargo in its pick-up bed. A perfect mash-up, in my mind. It's party in the front and business in the back, it would seem. The curves, the muscle, and yet, some practicality — but none at all, at the same time. My favorite vehicles.

I spot several fine specimens of the so-called "ute" variety of vehicle driving around Toms River. Me, in my jalopy Nissan hatchback, I beep and wave when I see one. Ah, a girl can dream, can't she?

Helping me indulge in those automotive daydreams is the requisite car show. Tomorrow, in downtown Toms River, is the last of the monthly installments of the summer event. Vintage, antique and unusual automobiles and motorcycles will line Washington Street and the surrounding area downtown for the last time this year.

The once a month car shows span the decades of motorized history. There's also entertainment and other vendors. The fun is 6 to 9 p.m.

It's not to be missed. The fall weather is predicted to be lovely. Whether my favorite vehicle will be there is something harder to forecast. But I will be there, longing, in hope of making my El Camino dreams come true.

About this column: The tourists are leaving, and it's time to look at all the great institutions and local impact as summer winds down in what we call "Locals' Summer." Related Topics: Car Shows, Downtown, Washington Street, and el camino

The cruise in the KMART shopping plaza on the 16th looks to a good event with decent venues

Come on down to the Berkeley Rec. Center on Route 9 this October 20th. We're doing a benefit for the 6th grade Stokes trip. We have cars coming from all over the state. Great cars, great food, great fun! We are in the Patch event calendar!
