Letter: School Board Attorney Pick Shows Partisanship

A Toms River Patch letter to the editor

Below is a letter to the editor submitted by Fischer Boulevard resident Joseph A. Lypowy:

Last year, Toms River moved its school board elections to November which I think does promote greater voter participation. Another reform that I think should take place is to eliminate the so called "non-partisan" school board elections, which is a total joke. The school board elections are and always were fiercely partisan behind the scenes. The pretense and charade that they are "non-partisan" reminds me of the story "the Emperor’s New Clothes" where the townspeople pretend the emperor is wearing invisible clothes when really he is parading through the town naked.

The recent appointment of school board attorney proves my point, where the previous Republican attorney was replaced by a new Democrat attorney in an overtly "partisan" maneuver. Let’s call a spade a spade, let the public know who is a Republican, Democrat or an independent. Last year the "Clean Slate" team claimed to be a bi-partisan "fusion ticket" which rode in on the post-Ritacco fervor. I did not see any evidence of bipartisan appointing amongst them. Why didn’t they appoint someone who is independent? The reason being, that regardless of any superficial voter registration, they were all shills for the Democrat Party.

Back in the 1980’s we saw many former "non-partisan" government towns, such as Brick Township reform back to regular elections which was a good thing. The reason for this is, because the public gets transparency, as far as a candidate ideologies and alliances instead of hiding behind some fake non-partisan façade. It seems to me the Liberals like to hide behind the "non-partisan" façade the most, especially if they are in a heavily Conservative area, this way they can blend in more and trick more independent people.

Wouild be nice to see someone actually not politically connected, but I guess unfortunately that will never happen. So sick of the politics in Ocean County, especially Toms River.

I agree. They say they are non-partisan yet at election time all we see are red and blue signs.

I agree with you. In the first school board election, we had a police officer and a doctor. Both seemed not to be politically connected. One of the "Clean Slate" candidates started his non-political career working for John Adler. Now the "Clean Slate party has a husband/wife team. Crazy is as crazy does. And the new attorneys are VERY connected to the Ocean County Democratic Party. Even helped to host fund-raisers for Adler. Yes, they need to stop claiming to be holier than thou.

I believe the 6 Clean Slate people... 4 are republicans and 2 are democrats... albeit 2 of the republicans consider themself independent.
The board attorney is a democrat and neighbor of Giovine his entire life, from what I understand.
The labor attorney appointed by the board is a republican.
They kept the Gilmore firm to handle/finish some outstanding litigation.

What else is new? Leones appointment was no suprise to anyone. It was splashed all over town for months before the election. Just like we all know Gilmore was in. Leone is the flip side of the Political party as Gilmore. We all knew this.

Good Luck ~ Politics is Politics doesn't matter if you are a Democrat or Republican. Which ever Party is the majority that's that way the voting will go. We have a husband and wife team, neighbors, and the old guard....looks like alot of the same just different names and no Ritacco to blame.

A longstanding Republican attorney was replaced by a new Democrat attorney, so what's Mr. Lypowys point besides being a Republican?.

Perhaps if the previous Board Members and Attorneys had not turned a blind eye (or participated) In Ritacco's crimes things would have turned out diffrently.
