Pet Valu Robbed at Knifepoint

Toms River police investigating Friday night incident

Toms River police are looking for a white male about 20 years old in connection with a robbery at the Pet Valu store on Fischer Boulevard Friday night.

Police said the suspect, who had short curly hair, acne and was wearing dark pants, a light gray pullover and a black ski mask, approached the 24-year-old male employee with a knife and demanded money, Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said.

The suspect ran across Fischer Boulevard on foot after taking about $100 from the register, Mastronardy said. There were no injuries.

The incident sent multple police cars to the busy shopping center through 9:45 p.m. Friday, with police tape cordoning off the area.

The robbery is being investigated by Toms River Officer TJ Polhemus, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department and Detectives Lou Santora and John Bajcic.

Discipline & hard work insisted upon by caring parents is an endangered species. The parents are too busy catering to their own whims & not the social needs of their children. The kids run wild in the wrong company. The parents soon lose all control of the kids who do as they please : drinking, drugs, casual sex & yearning for luxury items they can't afford. OLD story.
Parents have kids they don't have the ability to raise properly but the kids live. In times past such children died and thus were not around to be a problem. Lots of reasons for wild behavior. I hope the store had a security camera with sound. I hope the police dusted for prints if he touched the door /counter. Small clues are better than none at all. When I had a business I had a quiet but deadly dog behind the counter. I was on a major state highway but never had any attempted robbery. I had two exit doors from my side of the counter. When verbally abused I exited to another building, with the dog, at a lope & called the police. PEOPLE suck !!

Agreed...I never blame the kids anymore...many parents have failed in their duties.

You're assuming there are "parents". Usually it's only one. Either single parent or father in jail.

I was just about to write the same thing. The owner is such a nice person. Thank God no one was hurt.

Typically, when the economy gets bad, violent crime goes up. This is not a story about a bad kid, this is a story about bad behavior being seen across the board. Kids do what they see and hear adults doing - lots of talk in "sleepy Toms River" about violent crime lately, kids want in to what seems like easy money. History shows that tough times equal an escalation in crimes of opportunity, violence, domestic violence and other crimes. Sad but true fact. We don't have to like it, and we can choose to set the tone at home for our own kids and ourselves.

I wonder what time it happened. That mall is usually so crowded with people at the Shop Rite.

Unfortunately, the offspring of the MTV generation are coming of age. Sad to say, but I think this is here to stay, regardless of the state of the economy.

This is why conceal carry is needed in this state. This type of thing is only getting worse and the cops can't be everywhere.

i totally agree with you! criminals would be alot more hesitant to try something like this if he knew there was a possibility someone had a gun.

I don't own a gun, but I agree! Try robbing somebody at knifepoint in Texas...see what happens...

What is scary is the lack of conscience in some people today. Although no physical damage was done, one wrong move could result in bodily harm. There is little regard for other human beings. Thank God that wasn't the case here.

Just one question: if the thief was wearing a ski mask, then how accurate is the description of him having "acne"? Regardless though, I hope he gets caught soon before he goes on to do it again & perhaps even hurt or kill someone!

And Sat. was Mom & Pop businesses to be shopped instead of the almighty mall , this will put a damper on small M&P's in the future...so much for helping your fellow man...hope they catch short & fat...look in BK's he's probably there stuffing his face...on 2 for 1 burgers..

Gino, his forehead was exposed and the acne could be seen there.

Pet Valu is a chain, not a mom and pop store.

Short curly hair and acne can be seen thru a black ski mask?
Renee I never saw a mask that showed your hair or forhead nunless it didn't fit correctly. I mean why wear it then?
No cameras?

Most likely a drug addiction problem. It seems to be rampant. I can only think a desperate person could even attempt to do something like this.

This is a good place to let everyone know that my neighbor's house was broken into sometime this past week. I live in the Windsor Park Area. PLEASE lock your homes and cars. Their home was locked but they got in anyway! They did not get anything but they dumped every draw and closet! Summer home . What a mess!
