PHOTOS: Cleaning Up Devastation in Toms River
Flooding has receded in many places, but the damage created is immense
Whole homes along the Toms River bayfront were crushed by the water and wind of Hurricane Sandy. Two-story houses and beach cottages were crumpled up and ripped into confetti.
In Green Island, Gilford Park, the Bayshore, East Dover and elsewhere along the Toms River waterfront, whole neighborhoods under water after the storm could now begin the long process ahead: dry out and clean up.
Wednesday and Thursday, flooding had receded. What was next was to survey the damage and clean-up one of the biggest messes and devastation Toms River has faced in years.
Clothing dried on fences that served as makeshift clotheslines. Mattresses and upholestry were tossed curbside along with washed around planks and branches and other debris.
For much of low-lying Toms River, this is reality for days to come, with more than 36,800 without power in the township. The first outages came Sunday; some have been without power since then, residents reported to Toms River Patch.
This photo gallery is of Wednesday and Thursday images along Bayshore, Gilford Park, Route 37, Windsor Park and East Dover.

The photos are both wonderful and depressing.
I own a condo on the ocean next to Joey Harrison's in Ortley.
Do you know when you will be able to get over there to take photos?

Richard, I am housing "refugees" from Ortley and Seaside Park, and they were completely unaware of the total destruction of the island until they actual left their blocks. Unfortunate, but every house on the island suffered damage. Some worse then others...sorry. No date until they can return but the rumors are weeks due to the roads being covered with parts of homes and boardwalk etc. Good luck!

I see people on the news throughout Toms River and the rest of the state getting angry and upset with authorities all because they can't go back to their homes. These police officers and personnel know more about the situation then the citizens. I understand people want to see what's left and what damage has been done, but about 6 people in NJ have lost their lives. Be thankful you're not one of them.

Hi all...just saw pix of Ortley Beach area from someone who is on the island today. Wish I could give better news, but Joey Harrison's in still standing but destroyed and the condos next store are no better. There are homes all over the place. It brought tears to my eyes. Sorry to all of you around 2nd to 5th on the beach. Looks bad!

Hi again,
Is there any truth to the word that they would bus residents into the barrier areas across the Rt 37 bridge?
I'm particularly interested in Barnacle Bills in Ortley Beach. Is it still there?
Thanks.

The pix I saw were from Barnacle Bills, so not sure if it is still there, but from what I remember, I think so, and I say that very cautiously. Don't know how damaged it is.

I think because of looting, no one will be allowed....they are taking boats over to the island to steal! Image that!! What the heck are they stealing???

As far as I can tell from driving around it seems like ALL of Holiday City @ Berkeley as well as the other sections of Holiday City DO have power today. I'm just off Bananier down near the far end from Rt 37 and my power was back on Wed. late afternoon. There was very limited damage here in Holiday City@Berkeley - a few big trees down, lots and lots of branches but no flooding or anything like that.
Cell service has been very bad around here though. Even today, there are times when you can't get any 'bars' on the cell.

You have power and you're retired. WHY are you "driving around"?

12:09 pm on Friday, November 2, 2012
Well if it's any of your business.... I went to check on my parents (84 and 90 yrs old) several blocks away, as well as on a few other people in my neighborhood. I also needed gas yesterday and went to the nearest open gas station - but I had to drive a little bit to find one.... I also had to go into South Toms River and Beachwood early to check up on other relatives and friends - some STILL without power. Is that OK with you?
Mattie

And by the way....MANY people who live in Holiday City still work. We aren't ALL retired. Don't you have other things to worry over and make assumptions about?
