PHOTOS: Seaside Oceanfront After Hurricane, Nor'Easter

Amusements, dunes, boardwalk sustain damage

0 of 0

More than a week after Hurricane Sandy and days after a Nor'easter, media toured the Seaside Heights and Seaside Park boardwalk as Gov. Chris Christie surveyed the damage.

Piles of debris pushed from construction equipment sat in the Seaside Park beachfront parking lot. Dunes had vanished near the lifeguard house. Amusement piers had partially crumbled into the ocean. Elsewhere delicate signs remained apparently unscathed by the high winds and waves that had pelted elsewhere.

Here are pictures from Friday Nov. 9 of the oceanfront area.

How are you allowed in such a dangerous place and the property owners are not. Did the reporters sign waivers ? Are they escoted? How do they know where not to go?

We arrived by police escort bus, and were there for the press conference. I have a state police press pass that identifies myself as a reporter that I wear while reporting to dangerous areas such as fires, accidents and other areas, and not-so-dangerous areas too. Police where close by for this event.

yes, cosmetically, you are correct. but they did do some renewal to north end, with new boardwalk, and fencing. ONLY PROBLEM, IT'S GONE NOW. The old boardwalk in center seems to have taken the brunt. Don't know how safe it is of course. North and South, there are lesser and greater places, but it's THE PLACE THEY HOLD IN THE HEART OF THE BEHOLDER THAT COUNTS, THAT GOES FOR EVERYPLACE....WHERE YOU FROM CHIEF????

The conspiracy theorist and whistle blowers in here are getting out of hand. I wonder what those people are going to say next.......hmmmm. this sounds like a post i will read: "the politicians aren't allowing a sea of humanity back over the bridge all at once because they are are staking claims in all our homes. After they staking claim, they are going to make us pay double value to get our homes back." That's how ridicilous some of the posts sound in here. Please think logically prior to making a blanket statement because in the end you (no one specific) sound foolish. Most of us in here have either lost or had damage inflicted to our homes. Most of us only packed two or three days worth of clothes when we evacuated. Many of us are frustrated and understandably so. Having said that, we need to buck up and be smart. We will get to our homes. there is a process. although the process is not working for you (no specific individual) doesn't mean it is not working at all. It's not difficult to sit back and understand that the process is a difficult task that none of us have ever been faced with before. Lets demonstrate some patience because there are people over there working their butts off who are away from their families, friends and even their states. They here to help us. Spend a little less time creating bogus conspiracy theories that have zero logic and spend more time thanking people for spending their time helping us.

well said barry. although, you can never, ever really trust the politicians and the leaders of the town, i do believe some patience is in order. It was difficult for me not knowing, but now I know. I saw. I can't say much, as I was not as devastated as some. But, my immediate area is. I was also not as affected because I am not on a first level with no concrete base. Problem, being in a 3 floor condo, sandwiched in middle, we don't know if the structure is sound. I guess we'll find out eventually. All the first floor units are toast. soggy toast. Because of all the time from storm til people were allowed back, you realize the mold, mud, gook, sand, etc. that filled the first levels. They were up off the ground over the crawl space and maybe up 3 or 4 steps, but, I believe the water line in their units was about 18" more or less. Not one item remains in any of those units.

Of course it isn't right. You are witnessing the early phases of an Agenda 21 land grab. The first step is an eminent domain seizure of oceanfront property. Second step is to cripple the economy of the inland region and force the remaining residents to flee and seek work else where. Third step third step is to force residents to live in a high population corridors (i.e. along I-95) where they can be controlled. This is an evil bunch we're dealing with.

I appreciate the coverage that all news agency's have been doing for our broken jersey shore but just wish there would be more attention out on Ortley Beach or as the Emerg responders call it "ground zero" because that is where the most destruction occurred... The families over there should be followed back to their homes... If they could even find their home... Many are off their foundations and are a block or 2 away if not completely destroyed.... I understand the spotlight shining in Seaside because of the rides, amusements, and the tv show but please take some time to write about the total destruction of Ortley... And when people see stories and images of Ortley they will understand why the barrier island is not a safe place and that the complete infrastructure must be redone... Have faith we will Restore the Shore...

MANY ORTLEY-ITES ARE ON THE STORMYSANDY FACEBOOK SITE. IN FACT, MOST OF THEM.
HOWEVER, TRY TO UNDERSTAND WHY THE SPOTLIGHT IS THROWN ON SEASIDE. IT'S BEEN THE ENTERTAINMENT SPOT OF THE SHORE FOR MANY YEARS, ESPECIALLY FOR CHILDREN. WHAT IF THERE WAS NEVER A SEASIDE HEIGHTS TO TAKE THEM TO AGAIN. THE CHILDREN LOVE THE RIDES, GAMES AND GOODIES, AND WITHOUT THAT, ALTHOUGH THE SHORE WOULD BE A MUCH CLASSIER PLACE, THE KIDS WOULDN'T HAVE A PLACE THAT WAS SO MUCH FUN TO BE AT. THAT'S WHY MANY PEOPLE HAD ORIGINALLY PURCHASED THERE. FOR THEIR CHILDREN TO ENJOY. WE DID IT FOR MY GRANDCHILD. COURSE, SHE'S OLDER NOW, AND DOESN'T WANT TO GO ANYWHERE ANYMORE WITHOUT HER FRIENDS. NOW, STUCK WITH IT, BUT SO BE IT. UNLESS WE FIND THE OLD DREADED ORANGE STICKER WHEN NEXT WE RETURN.

For the record, fotos #120,123,128, 129 and 132 create a false impression. I walked that area of the SSH boardwalk on 10/26, the Friday evening just before the storm and nearly all of the boards for about a 100 yd long section of the boardwalk were removed for what appeared to be a routine planned maintenance or replacement. This is the section immediately North of the Berkeley Candy sign that you can see for a long distance walking South between the piers. Even before the storm, the boardwalk was down to just the posts and the beams that are shown in these pictures. Only about 6-10 feet of boards for pedestrian passage remained then, closest to building, which is what is shown damaged on foto #132. But the rest to the right of that had been removed when I saw it on the Friday before the storm.

My heart goes out to everyone who has lost their homes during this devastating storm. However everyone must be patient and allow the authorities to do what ever it takes to allow us onto the barrier reef to take the necessary measures to remove our valuables, take necessary photos, remove soiled foods, open windows to air out the rooms, etc. We aren't asking for to much but just keep us posted, PLEASE..........

Hey Barry, conspiracy theories are one thing, and reality is another. I live in Toms River - Silverton to be precise - and happen to be in Biloxi, MS right now. Basically ground zero for Katrina. When you drive up the beach here where scores of lovely house once were before the storm hit in 2005, now sits empty lots. All of which have "for sale" signs on them by large commercial developers. After Katrina devastated this area people who lived here all of their lives could not afford to live here any longer. The insurance rates went thru the roof, and the average people could not rebuild, and had to move out. That's not a conspiracy. That's the truth. And while I sure in hell hope it doesnt happen to the Jersey shore, there's no denying that it does happen.

Tuna Stick, I live in Ortley but in regard to insurance premiums being unaffordable, Isn't that the risk we all take living in an area that could potentially be devastated by a major storm? I can somewhat understand why our premiums go up after something like this occurs. It's the only way our homes can be repaired if a similar fate ever occurs again. Its unfortunate but the reality is that there is never a free lunch.when we live in a area of risk then we assume the risk or hazards associated with the area. We made that choice. We try to reduce our level of risk by having insurance but that risk never completely goes away. As for the "conspiracy theorist" i refer to, you have to read through all the posts on the patch to understand what I'm pointing out. Some of the things mentioned in this thread are even quite amazing. My point is that people need to trust the system until the system gives us adequate reason not to trust it. People are getting opportunities to see their homes. In this situation, we can't all just rush over there at the same time. That would just create disorganization and chaos. We all know that's the last thing we need

Barry, I agree that we have to see where it is going before jumping to any conclusions. And I certainly do not mean to give any unnecessary fear to concerned homeowners already stressed over what has happened. But we do need to be vigilant so as to not have the proverbial wool pulled over our eyes. There are many people who live in the barrier islands without the financial, or legal means to fight a force larger then themselves. As was done down here in Biloxi. And I am with you on those posting on these threads trying to scare people already scared. They should be ashamed of themselves. God speed my friend.

TRUE BARRY, BUT, IT'S DIFFICULT TO TRUST THE OFFICIALS OF THESE BARRIER ISLANDS. THEY CATER TO THOSE WHO ARE OF MEANS. BIG MEANS. THEY AND THE POLICE TOTALLY DISRESPECT THE LOCAL TAXPAYING GENTRY.
AND WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO PAY TAXES BY DEC. 17TH IN SEASIDE. SUPPOSEDLY WE CAN APPEAL TO HAVE 2013 TAXES LOWERED, BUT, WHO KNOWS WHAT NEXT AWAITS ARE BROKEN HOMES AND POCKETS.

time to start allowing vehicles to the island so that people can clean out their houses. This busing doesn't help anyone. Where is an internet site which is needed to get in touch with Town Hall departments such as the tax dept, electric, water/sewer. Are people being given time to pay their bills or given some reprieve
in their payment?

Some tribes in Sudan and Senegal http://www.coachoutletonlinexc.net/ Coach Factory Outlet have an average height of 6-foot-6, which also happens to be the size of the average NBA player.
