UPDATE: Plane Flying Over LBI Shows Nazi Symbol; JCC Reacts

An "extraterrestrial" group claims responsibility stating the banner displaying the swastika is misunderstood.

LONG BEACH ISLAND -- A plane that towed a banner displaying the word "Swastika," and showed a swastika intertwined with the Hebrew Star of David, flew over Long Beach Island and along the Jersey Shore on Saturday.

The Long Beach Township Police Department received at least several calls reporting the sighting, according to Bill Gee, a dispatcher with the department. Reports of the plane and banner have been reported as far north as Manhattan.

The plane appears to have been sponsored by an organization connected to the Raelian Movement, which claims life on Earth was created by a species of extraterrestrials.

The Jewish Community Center of Long Beach Island said it is aware of the incident and wants to know more.

"We're trying to find out-- what are their intentions?" said Don Pripstein, the center's president.

In a press release, the group said it intended to fly the banner on Saturday over New York City from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and “along the New Jersey coastline” from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.  Flights were also scheduled for other U.S. cities including Houston, Los Angles, Chicago and Miami.

Have you seen this plane? Please let us know in comments.

The Raelians' press release also declared Saturday as their "3rd Annual Swastika Rehabilitation Day," and invited Buddhists, Hindus and the numerous spiritual groups who use the swastika as their spiritual symbol to stand up and show their support in cities around the world.

According to its Web site, the swastika is a "symbol of peace and good luck in many Eastern religions." One variation of the symbol on the site shows it intertwined with a hexagram or the Hebrew Star of David and is described as the the “official” symbol of the movement.

This symbol or a slight variation of it is what callers told township police they had seen on Saturday.

Tell it to all the dead soldiers, sailors and airmen who gave their lives fighting Hitler and his maniacs.

It actually is a symbol of peace in ancient Indian culture, the nazi's adopted it at first to deceive the public into thinking they were a movement for peace and then we all know the end result.

Actually, it wasn't well said at all, Ed and Barb.

It's not just a CLAIM. Do some research instead of being ignorant. It was used WIDELY before the Nazis got it and ruined it for everyone.

Here, let me help you with that:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika#Historical_use_in_the_East

The article provides quite a list of references, too.

What I don't quite understand why they NEED to regain that symbol.. there are numerous other symbols to use. I'd venture a guess that even Buddhists recognise that the energy surrounding the symbol has now changed due to the actions of the Nazis. Just as it became a symbol of peace over the years, it became a symbol of ignorance, hatred, and death in our time. It may take millenia to take on another meaning. But there are people still alive who survived the nazi camps.... I don't think now is the time to be "retake" the symbol.

Calling the people "knuckleheads" when a moment later you prove YOURSELF to be the knucklehead just because of your own ignorance just proves that you should STFU and think before you comment on these things.
Try starting an INTELLIGENT conversation next time.

The dumb dimwits are the ones who mistake that symbol for the German socialist symbol. It was not a Nazi swastika, and in addition, they did not call themselves Nazis and they did not call their symbol a swastika. They called themselves socialists and they called their symbol a hakenkreuz (hooked cross) because it was a type of cross that they altered to represent S-letters for socialism (see the work of the historian Dr. Rex Curry). http://rexcurry.net/swastika.html

The US 45th Infantry adopted the swastika as their division patch in the early 1920s because it was stationed in the southwestern US and it was in fact an Indian symbol in that area.
With the rise of Nazi Germany they changed their insignia in 1939 to a Thunderbird , also a southwestern Indian symbol.

I agree there is alot of hate behind the symbol ed, but its the way its used that matters. Think about the confederate flag, a symbol that is often seen as a cry for racism and hate, yet it holds a strong history and the way it is used is more important than anything. Just like burning a flag, or hating the president, you might not have to agree with their opinions but you should respect their rights to express said opinions

Ancient India culture used the swastika as a sign of peace. Today , it is used in both Buddhism and Hinduism. Also , the Chinese used the symbol as a character , meaning eternity. To them , this is a sacred symbol. Unfortumatly , wack job Hitler took it and claimed it for the Nazis.

Yes, this is true. It's an ancient symbol that was used long before Hitler. But then, I'm sure people may have represented a mouse using 3 circles before Disney. That symbol is now globally recognized as Mickey Mouse. Why try to reclaim the symbol? For attention. To gain power over people, by upsetting and horrifying them. I'd never heard of this group before, so their plan to get some press seems to be working perfectly.

Yes Sally, it's called a first amendment Permit. You apply for it at the Supreme court permit office. Sometimes they have to reveiw what you want to say or do beforehand and it can take some time to receive it. Sometimes the Court of Public Opinion overrides the other Court like with the N-word. Have fun at the beach and I hope you don't get offended by what people say or wear or do.

Stan and Dottie, Freedom of Speech is a broad brush concept. And who does or does not take offense at what is being said is not a factor.

I have seen the American Nazi (there's a contradiction in terms) march in Ohio. The classiest response was when townspeople, instead of booing or throwing stones, turned their backs and ignored the marchers. Silence can be deafening.

In our country, we like to think that tolerance, consideration and patriotism rule. That is not often true. There is big money in hatred. Those who pit one group against another are true cowards and have no concept of what America truly is. But take note of how most hate-mongers speak in front of a backdrop of American flags. If ever there were a desecration of what our armed forces members perished for, that is the epitome.

Hate on whomever you might be. Yes, it is your constitutional right. The price of freedom is astronomical and the bill is never fully paid.

Obviously, the New Black Pathers with small clubs standing outside a polling place wasn't intimidating because the Attorney General, Eric Holder, would have taken action. What about that rainbow flag that flys over most of Asbury Park? I find that very offensive as a matter of fact I find that whole movement and what they stand for offensive. Soon they will remove your first amendment right to speak out about it as they try to gain popularity by pushing TV shows on the public featuring gay and lesbian comedians.
The Swastika personally does not offend me, but to be fair I must say that I have no ancestors that were effected by this period in history. To me this was a horrendous moment in history that will not repeat itself. Though as we speak there are atrocities taking place around the world that most people are not aware of that have no symbol to represent this oppression. That does not make it any less real. I hate to say this but maybe some people should be thankful that some out of touch person displays this symbol from time to time because it brings to light the atrocities that took place and will not allow this moment to be forgotten. The plights that are taking place in Africa and other parts of the world on a daily basis never get any recognition and most people are not even aware that they exist. The Swastika stands as a reminder of that moment in history that other atrocities are not "privleged" to have as a reminder.

Yes Stan, there are atrocities happening here and abroad every waking moment. And it is left to the good people of this world to speak out and crush the perpetrators.

Yesterday, while walking on the Seaside boards, a friend and I spotted a parachute falling down which laded in the ocean. Something shiny was attached to it. We didn't see anywhere or any plane it could have come from. We told an officer about it since everyone is supposed to report anything out of the ordinary these days. He said he'd go to the lifeguard post and see if they can make out what it is. Now, after reading this article, I'm wondering if it had anything to do with the plane that flew over LBI. Did anyone else see it?

Old Guy,
We saw the parachute fall into the ocean at the North Side of the Seaside Boardwalk. The tide was going out and was taking whatever it was with it. The last time we saw it, it was about in the middle of the boardwalk heading South. At first I thought it was someone para-gliding, but there was no boat pulling it. It went right into the water. It was too far out to make out what was attached to it, but for sure, there was something. The parachute was a dark color, brown or black. It was too far out to make out any writing that may have been on it. If you do happen to see it, or find out what it was, please let me know. Thanks. Happy hunting.

Millions of innocent people of many nationalities lost their lives in horrible ways because of the Nazi mentality. American service men and women paid dearly. So did Czechs, Poles, Russians, Germans, etc. Black, white, Christian, Hindu, Jew, etc. Hitler's forces were maniacal butchers.

Wonder what the comments would be if we were discussing 9/11? Of course, "Emphrataa" would remind us that it was the more than 3100 people who were slaughtered that were responsible. Or, better yet, 9/11 never happened. It is a product of the American Capitalist Kabal.

It is the same principle as having the right to scream "fire!"....but if you scream it in a crowded, dark movie theater then your right to do that infringes on the rights and safety of others. The 1st amendment, like it or not, has its conditions....it is not absolute. We do live in the land of the free, but if everyone was allowed to do literally anything they want, in total disregard of others, there would be total chaos. Sally, I think that your comment is salient and makes great sense (notice that I do not use the term "common sense" - there is no such thing these days). However, the constitution protects freedom of speech. In that right, there is no provision for poor taste and outside of the public safety exemption, people have the right to say despicable things without regard for others "feelings." Personally & on a much less visceral scale, I think that Bill Maher and his anti-woman commentary is distasteful and so "not funny," but he is welcome to spout his ignorance. I can only hope that the more he speaks, the more people realize his inane stupidity. The same holds true here. The swastika strikes a nerve and perhaps opens conversational doors. Parents can remind their kids about the horrific nightmare known as Nazi-occupied Germany...not the spoon-fed, edited version fed to them in schools and textbooks.

Then there was a large swastika symbol intertwined with the star of david and www.proswastika.org. I googled it on my phone and read about the movement. It seems pointless. The swastika is associated with terrible things. They need to move on and find another symbol. There is too much horror and inhumane thoughts and memories to salvage the swastika or attempt to reintroduce it now.

You are making no sense. Why do you ask if I am Jewish? That is totally irrelevant to the discussion. You brought up Haiti....are you Haitian? It does not matter what religion or race someone is...you can still be offended by something. You say you are tired of hearing about the holocaust huh.....are you also tired of hearing about slavery? You say that people need to get over things and live in the now....that is not realistic. Some very bad, evil things have happened and continue to occur in the history of mankind....if we choose to ignore and forget about them as you say should be done...they will most certainly repeat themselves.

Ok, so let's recap...you would like the Jews and African Americans to shut up and get over their ancestral histories. And you can apparently trace your ancestors back to the people who helped free the slaves. That IS what you just said, is it not? In that case, your insensitivity to groups of people whose ancestors have suffered atrocities is understandable....it is simply because you cannot relate and choose not to exercise compassion or sympathy to others who are different than yourself. In a word....sad.

if your offended by an image and can only drag up excuses as to your belief in what it means your ignorant and no argument or facts will persuade you to be informed and intelligent. the image was used before the time all you offended people refer to and in time it will be used again when ignorance like this is educated away. i'm of Japanese decent , should i be offended by the american flag since my ancestors had nuclear bombs dropped on them? i'm not and never would be. if your offended your not educated, be ignorant and be offended no one cares. it just shows us that your a knee-jerk crybaby

Regardless of what the symbol meant in the pre-Hitler world, most of us automatically refer back to our learnings of Nazis and mass executions...as far as this "group" of ET lovers goes...they obviously wanted to get all of our attention...it worked...let it go, silence speaks louder than words...especially when the conversations start to get immature...first amendment rights are great, but they can also allow us to look like a fool.

i said it would NEVER be offensive to me your ignorant, not worth my time you cant even read. learn about history before you flap your trap ,The Attack on Pearl Harbor, 1941, The US Administration of FDR sought to involve America in World War II. But the American people wanted to stay out of it. So the Administration provoked Japan, in the hope that they would attack the U.S. The plan worked, and FDR made sure that the attacks took place successfully and had the maximum effect and impact. Believing that it was a surprise and unprovoked attack by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor, Americans now supported U.S. entry into the war.

Well folks, the Raelians must be most grateful to all who have been outraged by the banner. It would have cost a small fortune to get this much publicity and all it cost was to hire a plane to fly their little "message". Just remember: the louder the noise, the more attention they get. Guess it may even help them recruiting new members. Just remember this, those who are offended when another uses their right to free speech and try to stop it are themselves emulating the very same repressive forces whom they despise.

Symbols don't kill, people do! People can use all sorts of symbols to sign their vile acts. The KKK for example and their burning crosses. Is the Christian cross stigmatized? Are blacks writing against the Christian symbol in disgust? no! Symbols are not at fault for abject human acts. Today a billion and a half Buddhists, Hindus and Raelians pray daily in front of the peaceful Swastika. The Swastika was merely hijacked by the Nazis and it is time to rehabilitate it, to disassociate it from this repulsive group, like the Christian cross from the despicable KKK. See video on Proswastika.org to educate (reeducate) yourself about the swastika

My ancestors came from Poland and saw the same hatred as many many others in every culture around the world. The ancient swastika is the most misunderstood symbol during these times. The KKK burned the Christian cross as an act of terrorism. However those racists weren't able to stop the symbol. Same with the sanskrit swastika and Buddhist symbol of well being; friendship.

Ah, reclaiming controversial symbols & terms. The LGBT community has had great success in reclaiming "queer," but I can't think of many other instances in which such reclamation has worked. As a Jew, I can say with certainty that no matter how the swastika originated, peaceful roots or not, it will be very, very difficult, if not impossible, for me to ever see it as anything but a symbol of the genocide committed against my ancestors. Some things are better left un-reclaimed.

It is not because it was high jacked by the Nazis during WW2 that the Swastika, oldest symbol of the world should be banned! Should the people stop wearing the cross because the KKK used it as their symbol?

its increasingly clear that some people are uneducated and narrow minded and go full steam like a runaway train regardless of facts and ignore history that doesn't fit into there ammo box of pity. its come down to people mocking each others names and changing the subject trying to grasp at straws. stop being afraid over an image of something that you think is wrong, maybe the way you think is whats wrong. pagans used the pentagram (star of david) kkk burned the cross Nazis used the swastika you can go on and on its not about what they thought about the images its about what you think now, if you can only see hate and pain in the images then the ones who hate did there job by scaring the simple minded into fear. you fear an image that cant hurt you. just because you don't understand something doesn't make it ok to fear monger.

A pentagram is a "Star of David"?
A pentagram is a FIVE sided star as its name implies. PENTA, five sided as in Pentagon.
BTW, It is a Star of David, it is a Shield of David. By either name it is a hexagram, six sided.

The so-called “Star of David” is essentially a “hexagram,” nothing more, nothing less. There is no Biblical or Jewish evidence that traces this ancient occult symbol with king David of Israel. However, there is evidence that it was used by king Solomon, after he turned to pagan gods and the occult, late in his life.

I must admit that I didn't know the swastika symbol had a history, much less what it was. Frankly, I never gave it any thought. And now that I have learned the symbol represented other meanings before Hitler, not much has changed in how I view it today. Having been born the day after WWII was declared officially over, I have never viewed nor given any thought to the swastika representing anything but evil. And now that I have been enlightened on the subject, my feelings remain the same. Anyone associating themselves with the swastika symbol is not going to get a positive response from me regardless of their intensions or this ancient history lesson. Ever.

Your post is a clear example of what's wrong with many people today !
Having a closed mind !
You can not graft a new idea on to a closed mind, even when shown the thinking is flawed !
So, many cling to their flawed ideas because they do not have the strength of character to admit when their wrong, even in the face of overwhelming evidence of the facts !
One of the things that makes this country great is the fact that this group has the right to do this in a peaceful way. They did not force me to look at it and anyone that did see it and was upset ( however misguided that might be ) can go right over to that place of business and have them tow a banner with their message, as to why they thought it was in bad taste.
I do wish that the symbol in question was disassociated from the Nazi's and their regime of hate, as it was and still is a symbol of good luck in many cultures around the world ( in the 20's, 30's & 40's many U.S.A. sport teams even had the symbol on the front of their jerseys & even called themselves the " Swastikas " ).
People need to stop assuming ( we all know the old joke about assumptions... makes an ASS out of U and ME ). People who saw this symbol automatically assumed it was a message of hate and never checked out this groups web site.
They have a very long campaign ahead of them to try to get though to the many closed minded people before the symbol will be seen for what it always was and still is !
Notice, no name calling. Grow up, folks !

Thank you for your self-righteous response. When I posted my comment, I knew I was guaranteed this shot was coming. I just didn't know what handle/handles would be attached to it. What overwhelming evidence of the facts do I not have the strength of character to admit that I was wrong about? I understand the swastika has various meanings to various peoples throughout the world. However, in America, the swastika has represented evil for 70+ years unchallenged. My closed mind is unlikely to change on this subject just because you think we should embrace some of the habits of other cultures. By your own posting, the USA sport teams banned the use of the swastika symbol and don't seem to be in any hurry to adjust that action. If you want to identify with the swastika, you have every right, even a duty perhaps. And if you want to put a bumper sticker on your vehicle that says 'I hate cops' because you feel you have a good reason for doing so, again feel free to proceed. But please, don't expect my closed mind to stand up for you in either case, because by your standards, I am all that is wrong with America. I'm not assuming that, am I?

Michael Waters

1:07 pm on Tuesday, June 26, 2012

Some people believe that the display of any sort of Swastika should be forbidden because it is offensive to Jews. From first-hand experience, I can assure you that dozens of elderly German Jews I personally know who lived through or escaped the holocaust, were and are well aware that the Swastika predated the Nazis and do not consider it a Nazi symbol. One thing most of them have learned -- and have taught to me -- is that RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE is a key to preventing future holocausts. Therefore they honour and respect the religious iconography of others. including the Jain's and the Hindus, who revere the Swastika as a symbol of long life, good health, and good luck !
As I said in the post above, don't assume it stands for hate until you KNOW how it is being used !
TOLERANCE is what makes our country great ! !

From the article above.....
" The Jewish Community Center of Long Beach Island said it is aware of the incident and wants to know more."
" We're trying to find out-- what are their intentions ? " said Don Pripstein, the center's president. "

The group that paid to have the banner flown over the beach has responded to the question asked by Don Pripstein, the center's president....( Below is the link to the letter that was sent to him. )

" Letter to the President of the Jewish Community Center of Long Beach Island "

http://www.proswastika.org/news.php

Amazing what a little research will turn up.
I must say that I have to respect what they are trying to do even if I don't believe in their core beliefs.
At least they are up front with what they are trying do and it seems to me, doing their best to be respectful by writing to Don Pripstein-The Jewish Community Center President directly !
I would be very interested to know if Mr.Pripstein writes a response to this letter and now that he has seen what their intentions are, exactly how does he feel about their mission to reclaim the Swastika ?
I would hope that the authors of this article would contact him and do an update. Judging from all the comments posted, I think it would certainly be newsworthy !
For the folks above that responded to my posts, thank you for your opinions, I will give them some thought.
The symbol has been used for good for 3000 years, before Hitler.
