Police Charge Toms River Man, 63, In Lakewood New Year's Eve Stabbing

A Toms River man has been charged in the stabbing of a woman at the Lakewood American Legion post on River Avenue in Lakewood on New Years Eve.
Robert Hankins, 63, of Toms River, has been charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon (a knife) for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a knife, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch-Ford. Hankins bail was set at $250,000 no 10 percent option by the Judge James M. Blaney.
The woman, who has not been identified, was stabbed at the legion post at 1256 River Avenue last night.
“On Saturday, December 31, 2011 at approximately 11:55 p.m., the Lakewood Police Department received a call concerning a stabbing which occurred inside the legion hall," Ford said in a press release. "Lakewood police officers discovered a woman with a slash wound to her neck. She was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment."
Hankins apparently stabbed himself in the neck prior to the arrival of the police, according to Ford. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Here goes another not guilty by reason of insanity. Change that to resemble the sane states which after the accused is found to be sane enough to stand trial to have the trial and when found guilty, impose the proper sentence. In NJ the patient can't spend anymore time in the mental hospital than a sentence would have been. The evaluation must of course that he/she isn't a danger to himself or others. Have the trial rght away and do away with the NGRI.

How do you know he doesn't have his own insurance coverage? Didn't mention he was homeless or indigent or anything. And even if he is, you really believe in letting people bleed to death or die of other injuries just because you "don't like paying for it"? Really? Wow, Nice.
And here I thought we were a civilized society. Maybe if he turns out to have a real diagnosis of mental illness we can just kill him, you know- so he doesn't cost us anything...

I just replied to S as well. Glad I'm not the only one thinking like this. Not to mention that their initial comment came across as though the bill was being paid directly out of pocket. Personally, if I were to guess based on the age and location, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a veteran who may well have some sort of underlying problem or maybe just a few too many drinks. Being a veteran, it's quite likely he would have coverage through the VA in the first place. So if that's the case, yeah I guess we would be paying for it. Guess by S' standards, we ought to remove any health coverage & care for them too, huh?
