Police Investigating Fatal Shooting Report In Beachwood; Officer Reportedly Involved

Shooting may have taken place in the area of the High Velocity Sports Bar and Grill

Police were investigating reports of a fatal shooting at the High Velocity Sports Bar and Grill in Beachwood on Thursday night.

Jersey Shore Hurricane News reported that a police officer was involved in the shooting; the police officer was reportedly fine.

The parking lot of the sports bar was blocked off near Route 166 early Friday morning. Beachwood police, the Ocean County Criminal Investigations Unit and Beachwood Fire Company personnel were on the scene.

Police tape was stretched across the empty parking lot and the lights were off inside the sports bar.

Authorities at the scene referred all questions to Ocean County Executive Assistant Prosecutor Michel Paulhus. Paulhus could not be reached for comment early this morning.

Come back to Berkeley Patch later today for a complete story.

My prayers go to the officer, his brothers in blue and the officers family. Taking someones life is not easy. Keep your head up...Remember in the end the most important thing is you and your coworkers going home at the end of the shift.

My heart goes out to the victim's family. If you read carefully you'll notice that it says it appeared to be. The police need to learn how to use their self defense handgun properly. You're not supposed to kill the criminal your suppose to wound them so you can a arrest them. Killing is still illegal weather you're a cop or not. You've never heard so many stories back in the day about people being killed by cops. This is because of those cops were trained properly. It's 1 thing if a guy is shooting at you or aiming it at you. But if someone is pointing or shooting a gun obviously it doesn't appear to be anything because it is what you see it is!

Obviously you don't know what you're talking about. They are trained to shoot to kill, not shoot the suspect in the arm so they can return fire. It's not the movies, it's real life

You have to be kidding you have a split second decision his life or yours lets just wait and see if he shoots at me. I bet if he was aiming at one of your kids you would want the policeman to fire or wait a minute let me shoot him in the leg and after he falls he shoots your kid anyhow and maybe the officer. If your carrying a gun illegally and a policeman says to drop it its real simple drop it. This guy signed his own death certificate .

Especially if it involves a drunk person who doesn't even know right from left

that was his decision to go out get drunk and cause the police to respond. Police are trained not wound or kill but to stop the threat. The suspects actions dictate the actions taken by the police. it all comes down to what the officer saw the suspect doing. things happen faster then you can imagine especially when someone is refusing to follow your commands. just the slightest movement by them causes the officer to reassess the the tactical situation he is involved in. they only have a split second at times to do that. did he feel the safety of the public or his own safety was at risk? only he can explain that. so lets give him the chance to before saying he should of or could of done this or that.

I agree Nick, with all of thier trainimg abd all of the money they make, they should have attempted to wound him, not kill him! Its not like they were dealing with a damn sniper! Prayers for the victim and his family. Apparently the other comments are from ppl who are too high class for Ocean County, and have never been to a sports bar. . .

None of us know what happened; unless you were there, so why don't we hold off judgement until we actually know what happened! Even then; again unless you were there, we will only know the reported, not the truth necessarily.

Oh & hey Bob.... Thought we were talking about the story, not how stupid NickyG is ? NickyG brings up some things that we need to include in our conversation & for someone(YOU) to stop talking about the issue & go for the neck of someone who "said" something is indicative of how scary people's ignorance can turn into something dangerous! As for the cop.... Ultimately, he I the one with the training, the weapon, & the authority to use it. With that authority comes responsibility. We'll see........

Actually, Bob is 100% correct. Nicky is completely wrong. (besides the part of police needing to be trained to use their guns properly.......since they are)

This isn't the movies. Maybe Sgt Riggs can hit a moving target in the knee from 30 yards with the adrenaline pumping from having a gun pointed and or firing back at you, but its not as easy in real life

First of all nobody knows the whole story yet. Second...you talk about people being shot by cops, well what about all the cops being shot lately????? Everyday you hear of another cop being shot and crime lately is outta control!!! A cops job has become much more dangerous these days...look at the whole picture.

Absolutely, we should consider call the cops who were murdered. But let's look at this from my point of view since I grew up in bayville new jersey which is basically the next town over. To this very day I still drive through beachwood to go places. And I have even been to high velocity. And even I must say that that place is a pit for trouble. But let's consider the situation; it's almost 1 am and it all occurs in a parking lot that is almost completely dark. A man who has obviously been drinking all night and is probably staggering drunk and can barely walk let alone listen is approached by a cop for whatever reason. Now I am I to believe that the cop has night vision. Even the article says it appears to be a handgun. For all we know the man coulda been reaching for his wallet to show the police officer his identification. I guess will just have to wait and see. But if this turns out to be another careless cocky cop not utilizing his training properly then I hope all of you ignorant people learn a wise lesson here. People are so fast to jump to conclusions. This is exactly why this situation occurred too! But anyway you look at it someone is dead and your heart should go out there life and their family no matter who they were or what they did. You people are full of so much hatred. You're so quick to judge other people's mistakes as if you're perfect and you never do anything wrong. I'm sure that you have mistreated someone severely

The police are trained on when to use their weapon, and have to use that training to decide, sometimes rather quickly, whether to shoot or not. Supposedly there was a report of a shooting, and the officer arrived and saw someone in the parking lot, perhaps identified by witnesses as having a gun. The officer saw a man with what appeared to be a gun, ordered the man to drop it repeatedly, but the man did not. For the safety of others and himself, he decided he had to shoot. I wonder if the guy wanted to be shot (suicide by cop), although we might never know. We don't know if he was drunk, but the officer may not be able to ascertain that in such a situation and has to act as if the guy is capable of using the gun on someone. From other reports I have read which give the man's identity & a bit of his history, this man is a person who would have known what ignoring the policeman's instructions about dropping a weapon meant, and should not have even had a weapon! The whole thing is tragic, but I am not going to second-guess the police officer or his training. Let the authorities investigate and give us more information.

Cops don't wait for some kook with a gun to start shooting at them or at others...failing to drop your weapon results in being shot by the police...if you don't know about the NJ Attorney Generals use of force policy then keep your mouth shut! God Bless Sergeant Harris for serving the community with pride and keeping the people who bash him and his profession safe.

I have lived next to High Velocity before it was a bar and since it opened. There has never been an incident as bad as this. As eloquently described, I am one of those "shady" people who go there occasionally to get a beer and a bite to eat. I have nothing but respect for the Beachwood Police and I am glad my tax dollars were hard at work. I concur with Debra Marcine's comment, there's a person dead and the officer and his family that are going to be tormented by this horrible incident.

the police are taught to aim for the widest part of the body to stop someone, not try to be john wayne and shoot the gun from thier hand as that can get you killed, this is not a movie.
the officer did what he thaught was right at the split second.

There are several reasons police are trained to shoot at the torso. First it is most likely to stop the suspect. It is also a bigger target than an arm or leg.
Second a shot to an arm or leg is likely to go through and hit someone or something else.

Think about it ,why would he be in a bar with a gun in New Jersey? In the south we leave our guns at home when we go into a bar. Great harm can can come to a man by bringing a gun to a bar.
