Resident Plans T-Shirt Fundraising for Ortley Beach Community

Sale of "Rise Up!" T-Shirts set to benefit the community of Ortley Beach

One of the local communities hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy is Ortley Beach, and a resident there is doing what she can to help her home area and those who also live there.

“I’m in the final stages of having an Ortley Beach ‘Rise UP’ T-Shirt made and hope to have the website for ordering up and running by this Wednesday,” said Meghan Tamasco, a resident of Ortley Beach. “I think that it's a nice positive story about how those from Ortley have come together to help each other during this very trying time.”

Tamasco explained that the concept for the T-shirts was created on a Facebook page for Ortley Beach, and that she contacted the David D. Hammar Foundation, a New Jersey-based nonprofit organization, for help.

“They agreed to help us raise money in any way they could. Not only are they handling the printing/ordering of the shirts for us, but they are creating a website for us to receive donations on,” said Tamasco.

Tamasco explained that many are devastated by what happened to the Ortley Beach community, and wanted to do something positive for the many residents who will be without homes for some time.

“We aren’t a wealthy community, but it was paradise to all of us. I couldn't just sit back and watch the frustration mount, as we’re still not allowed back to see our homes...and I’m hoping that the positive message in these T-shirts (and possibly stickers and wristbands) will help to boost morale and create a community even stronger than before,” Tamasco stated.

Tamasco said that the proceeds earned from the sale of the apparel will be donated either to the Town of Ortley Beach and/or community members who may need assistance.

Nice job. Much better than the guy selling "I survived Sandy" shirts on Hooper Avenue. I won't knock anyone trying to make a buck in these tough times, but that slogan isn't as cool when you think of all the people who, y'know, didn't survive Sandy.

I agree - that is tacky and in poor taste. I wish someone would tell that man (well the several over ocean county) to be a bit more sensitive. That storm wasn't a joke, and those shirts make it seem that way

Great idea! Our beloved Ortley needs a lot of help

Also just a suggestion... Could make this graphic into an auto magnet or decal.. Bet a lot of people would love to put it on their car and show support..

Brenda great idea with the car magnet. Rachel, the kids definitely need shirts also because they've been thru more than children should ever have to. I can't wait for this to happen. You should start taking pre-orders. I'm in for a bunch of shirts.

Thanks, everyone! I'm glad that you'll all behind this - Ortley is such a special place to us all. The webiste for shirts/sweatshirts should be posted tomorrow or early Thursday. We're just working on a few last minute details to make sure all runs smoothly and we raise as much as we can for Ortley Beach! I want to give a Big Thanks to Box Brown for giving us the inspiration, Travis Poulsen for creating the final shirt design and especially The David D. Hammar foundation for all of their support getting this up and running. We will post the order information on the Ortley Beach Community Facebook page as soon as its available (I also want to say Thank You from all of us on this page to Alicia, who has been keeping the community informed through news links and pictures!) https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ortley-Beach-NJ/27471611729?ref=stream . I will also post a link to this feed for those that don't have Facebook. Thank you again, and I look forward to seeing the donations for our amazing little beach town roll in! - Meghan T.

How do we know the website is legit? Why are the designs different from the blue one that is attached to this article? What happened to the original logo "renew, rebuild, rebound"? I hate to be a skeptic but there are a lot of nefarious parasites out there.

The pictures can be posted by anyone, and are not posted by the author of the article. However, www.riseuportley.com is a direct link into the website for The David D Hammar foundation, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit (mentioned in the article). You can google the foundation to learn more about them as we'll. Hope this helps!

While I respect the folks who are trying to raise money and I believe their hearts are in the right place, I question their decisions and their judgment. Not only did they inappropriately rip off the the person who created the design, but why in the world would they EVER use the words "RISE UP"???? First, if it's from Bruce Springsteen's beautiful song, My City of Ruins, did they get his permission to use it or did they rip that off too? If not, how insensitive and just stupid is it to use "RISE UP" with regard to the worst hurricane in our history in which our waters did indeed RISE UP and utterly decimate our town and the homes and businesses of so many and caused people to lose their lives? Inappropriate beyond belief.

Couldn't agree more. Rise Up is a bizarre way to show moving foraward. The simple "Restore the Shore" slogan has been a pretty popular one for most of the coast. I don't like any of what this website has to offer.
