Restaurant Valet Injured When Bayville Woman's Vehicle Strikes Him

Lawrence Husted of South Toms River was hospitalized after the accident

A South Toms River man was injured Friday night when he was struck by a car while crossing Water Street in Toms River, Toms River police said.

Lawrence Husted, 56, of South Toms River, was crossing Water Street about 10 p.m. from the Toms River municipal parking lot back toward Water Street Cafe when he was hit by a 2008 Chevrolet driven by Joann Toth, 56, of Bayville, according to Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy. Toth was westbound on Water Street at the time of the accident, he said.

Mastronardy said the report by Traffic Safety Officer Steven Schwartz said Husted, who is a valet for Water Street Grill, was returning to the restaurant after parking a car in the lot.

He was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, police said.

Valet parking using the municipal lot for FREE?? I know that the meters downtown are not enforced after 6pm..Can't wait for a lawsuit to happen because the parking lot is not patrolled..Hopefully the town will lockup the garage after midnight and reopen it at 6am..Just saying..

Water Street Cafe has no business using the municipal lot. That is why Toms River installed parking meters.

You people should stop bitching about the parking garage and have some sympathy for my bother in-law.There are more important things in life then a dumb parking garage.

At least the Patch did not report that he died like APP. They still have a link on their home page saying there was a fatality...its not until you click the link that is said the Valet was injured, not killed. What A sorry paper.

If you idiots realized, they can use the garage because half there lot is taken up by the construction equipment for the roof going on the garage.

Where is their lot? Isn't it a municipal lot that they use anyway? That restaurant never had a lot of their own. Some of us idiots also know which there/their to use in a sentence.

I feel badly for the injured truely. Not sure exactly where this accident happened but if it was on the corner of Main/166 and Water Street, someone needs to get a engineer out there to fix the walkway/traffic issue. It is no wonder more people are not hurt. If you turn right off Main Street you go right into oncoming traffic from both RT 166 West to Water Street and also the Water Street cross over Main to West Water Street. Sound confusing? Well add pedestirans trying to cross to the little Island there and you get a accident. It is so hard to make a Westbound turn onto Water Street when you get all this side action coming off Route 166 etc. The engineer must have been crosseyed who fixured this out. Get well soon.

Reproducing a comment that I made at nj.com yesterday:

"This restaurant is actually a full block away from Water Street on a dead end that terminates at the River. To get to the municipal garage, one needs to cross the 4-5 lane wide Water Street, near two mild curves, and a short block away from the complicated intersections at Main St and Irons St for the bridges. It's not surprising that some one crossing this road over and over again in the dark would eventually have problems."

This was an accident waiting to happen. It's too bad that this young man was put into this position. I haven't been by there since the incident, but I wonder if there even is a crosswalk there, so close, but yet so far from the Main St crossing.

Remember the pedestrian always has to right-of-way; or did you fail that question on your driving test? Careful; you might be the next person to hit somebody and possibly kill them; live with that on your conscience. Jerk off
