UPDATE: Route 37 Bridges Deemed Safe, DOT Says

Eastbound span still closed

Both the Route 37 eastbound Thomas A. Mathis Bridge and the Route 37 westbound J. Stanley Tunney Bridge are safe, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The eastbound bridge, however, had damaged bridge bearings which will require repair.

The eastbound bridge remains closed to traffic because of security concerns and public safety issues on the Seaside Heights side of the bridge, not because of the damage to the bearings, the DOT says.

Details on the repair work necessary and time frame for the eastbound bridge to be reopened will be provided as they become available.

Both spans have been inspected for damage incurred from Hurricane Sandy. Both bridges have been determined to be structurally sound and fit to safely remain in operation, said sokesman Tim Greeley.

Emergency responders and vehicles are being allowed eastbound access using a "contraflow" lane on the westbound bridge.

Follow the link and put your address in. It's an aerial view and you'll get an idea of what you're in for. Best of luck to you.

The eastbound bridge needed to be replaced long before Hurricane Sandy. The lanes are too narrow, the drawbridge obsolete and the pavement has too many cracks. Too much traffic goes over that bridge in the summer, and eventually it will collapse. The state should buy that gift shop that's finally for sale and build a new bridge with a gradual lane change on Pelican Island.

Timing ?
Does anyone know when residents will have access back to the island to see their homes in Ortley ? While the aerial footage is helpful, we need to see our home and recover whatever we can, while we still can. I understand some people are taking jet ski's over the bay to check out the damages...

Possibly Monday via police escort, but who knows. People crossing the bay Vay jet ski or boat will be arrested.

While I realize access to Seaside, Lavallette, Ortley Beach is not possible, wondering if there is any way to contact someone about access just to Pelican Island. Would just need to get to my house to board it up and then leave.

I just evacuated yesterday when the police mandated that we leave Pelican Island. We heard that possibly in one week people will be allowed to check their houses, pick up their valuables and leave--probably on the 12th. The police department is going to announce the details. Only the westbound bridge is being used and it is only for emergency vehicles.
