Charlie Lord talks about his experience in Hurricane Sandy.

Charlie Lord has seen his share of storms come through the Jersey Shore.

The 55-year resident of Lavallette remembers '62. He remembers the Halloween storm of 1991, the Perfect Storm, the December 1992 nor'easter that tore up much of the Jersey Shore, and he remembers the close calls of Hurricane Gloria in 1985 and, of course, Hurricane Irene in 2011.

He figured that Hurricane Sandy would be no different.

"My wife wanted to leave but I said no," Lord said, a few days after he finally got off the island. "Next time, I'll go."

For a frightening hour on Oct. 30, Lord said, he wasn't sure they were going to survive.

When the ocean breached the dunes, he said, the water rose quickly around his Vance Avenue home. Within minutes his front yard was flooded, and quickly the water reached the second step of his home.

"As I was standing there, a chunk of something came up, our porch lifted up and crashed," and pieces went everywhere, he said. "At that point I looked at my wife and said, 'I think I made a fatal mistake. I am sorry.' "

"I wish to hell I'd gotten off when the governor told us to get off," he said. "He was right."

Hear Charlie tell his story in his own words by clicking the video above.

I don't understand why anyone would stay under a mandatory evacuation. What is the point. So, worse case scenario is you leave your home for a few days and if its a false alarm and the storm is not that bad, great....but if it is bad at least you got out. I don't think people will be taking evacuation orders so lightly in the future.

What you people fail to realize is that the Media searches these people out for the 'news'. I'm sure he didn't call the news, waving his hands and say here I am, I survived interview me !!!! Man, no one is calling him a hero, he admitted he was wrong and made the wrong choice.
Jeeeze Louise do you people actually read and comprehend these articles BEFORE you comment?
And Brick Prick, thats ALOT of personal info about the Ocean Grove couple, to know. Unless you are family or close friend in which case glad you are neither of mine.

From reading the article I am not getting the perception that this man is a hero. This article is telling me that this man realizes he was wrong to stay after being told to evacuate. He turned to his wife and said he made a mistake and he was sorry. Seems to me that he is not going to stay if ever evacuated again.

I personally think this man should spend some e time in jail for totally disregarding the govenors orders and see what he thinks about that. I deem him as being stupid and selfish for putting himself, his wife and the first responders in harms way. And one more thought, doesn't his wife have a mind of her own..to say I'm out of here.

Well after all is said and done I think everyone who is warned in the future should take it serious. Just because you lived their all of your life and think you know how to survive a disaster when you are told to get out then do so.
We have a big advantage when it comes to a disaster warning. You have time to leave as opposed to an earthquake or tornado.
This was something that dominated the news for days prior and if that wasn't enough to shake up people then what is?
They were extremely lucky families to be able to talk about it now.

I don't see him as a hero either. At the time he thought he knew what he was doing, then quickly found out he was wrong. He admitted it and maybe his story will help some other poor soul should something like this happen again. Maybe I am morbid, but I like to hear stories about how people survive and what really happened while the storm was raging. His wife has free will, she could have left him there, but she most likely also made the decision to stay. I want to hear the stories of all who stayed. They are not heros, just ordinary people who bad very bad decisions, but at the time they did not know how bad this storm was going to be.

Did he really want to leave? Or does that that help sweeten his story at the bar... Each time it changes a little and only the bartender knows for sure.. I agree with all no hero here...
Just another liability our hard working rescue personnel have to put there life on the line for.

Nobody said he was a hero. You people made that up to knock him down. I think its great and unselfish that he shared his experience with us and it might make some people think twice before staying behind during an evacuation next time.

Ya know... A lot of people that have a lot to say probably weren't devastated by the hurricane. I lost my home and everything in it... I evacuated as I was told, and if I.stayed I would have drowned, the water level was over six feet high in my home. I literally have the clothes on my back, the few things I packed, and most importantly, my life... But I am going through emotional Hell, just trying to grasp everything is gone.... I don't think this guy was smart, but I'm not going to be so low and juvenile to make fun of his appearance.... Not everyone just lost power... Whatever the reason for this article, I can assure you, it wasn't published to mock the poor guy. Have some compassion.

As the author, I published his story because of the fact that he said -- like so many people did before the storm -- that he didn't think this storm was going to be a big deal. I published his story because he says, bluntly, that he was wrong, and that in the future he will leave. He says he made a mistake.

What I hope is that others who stayed -- or those who think about staying in the future -- will listen to his story and see themselves in him, and will listen to what he's saying, that he should have gotten out.

That's why I thought this story was important to share.

Karen Wall, I think it was a great story and it was important to share. Hopefully it should help others to heed warning in future storms. I don't think anybody is going to ever forget this storm on the East Coast. Now, most will take all storms more serious because of what has happened and those who stayed and experienced this storm. In sharing their own experience and the reasons they should not have stayed might just might prevent others from trying this very same thing this man did. This man came forward and admitted he was wrong. He figured it was like all the other storms and was wrong. He was not the only one and I am sure all of them will never do it again. Thankfully they all learned by their mistake to let others know not to follow in their foot steps to do something as foolish. This man admitted to it as others did in their stories. Calling names is childish and you never know what you might be up against in any situation. AT times we can all make the wrong choices and regret it.

I think Mr. Lord made a mistake as he is honest enough to admit. However I find some of the commentary very judgemental in tone. If you listened to him, he said he didn't have many options on where to go especially because of having pets. As it is, he relegated to a couch. I think he should be credited for at least admitting to a mistake.

Karen wall. It is a great story and you covered well !! I'm sure why you had to explain why you covered it that's your job!! That's what you do!! I think your fantastic writer!
But the blame is not on you it is the people that stay behind, is the problem. You posted that this guy stayed just like the last 4 or 5 hurricanes he lived through, I lived on the water in LBI all my life. We bought a home here and I decided to stay out of the flood zone! I do not want that problem anyway you know when you post about the good and bad stories people are going to comment positive and negitive. People get personal too. I don't know why you deleted my post. I wasn't a problem. I was merely pointing out how people are. I think you should of left it but you have the control so be it
