Suspect Sought in Silverton Attempted Burglary
Helicopter deployed to assist in hunt for man accused of trying to break into senior's residence
Toms River police are searching for a man who they say attempted to rob a Holiday City at Silverton residence earlier this afternoon.
A New Jersey State Police helicopter assisted local authorities in the search for a white man in his 20s described as wearing a black hoodie, gloves and light grey pants. Toms River police Chief Michael Mastronardy said something was covering the suspect's face. He reportedly stands 5'9" and is 200 pounds.
Mastronardy said the suspect attempted to break into an 84-year-old woman's home via the back window, but fled when confronted by the resident just before 1:30 p.m. He had attempted to remove the window screen when he was allegedly caught in the act, police said. The man then fled on foot toward Church Road with a crow bar in his hands.
Officer Mark Nater and Sgt. Dave McCallum are investigating the attempted burglary while Lt. Michael Brosnan is in charge of the search for the suspect.
Anyone with information about the suspect can call Capt. Bruce Burgess at 732-349-0150 ext. 1201.

A better end to the story would be Grandma pulling out a 44 Magnum and ending this disease on our society. Pass the Castle law now!

That is absolutely, 100% not true. Are you just trying to start something?

What happened in the woods in Silverton next to South Shore Dr this evening? Was there a fire or did something happen to the homeless guy?

I was wondering the same thing. I passed there last night around 5:20 and there was a lot of police activity, but no flashing lights.

"Zerosignal" is like Newt Gingrich. He'll explain (rationalize) later.

Patch, please get a "statement" or "news release" from the chief. Otherwise, the PD is mum.
1,000 cars must have passed by that scene with several cop cars on the shoulder and grassy edge of the woods opposite the Fischer Blvd. intersection.

Police were using squad cars and helicopters around OCC, Silverton and Holiday City for the incident this article describes.

I was at a party today and a few people who live in the Silverton, Fischer Blvd area of Toms River said they heard rumors the homeless man, Billy, was "killed". Not merely passed away. They said they saw "crime scene tape" and everything... does anyone know if this is true, or just rumors running wild?

There are alot of attempted robberies in the senior villages in our area. We need a much greater police presence! Instead of the police sitting at construction sites (which by the way we could pay much less for a rent-a-cop to do) the police need to be out constantly patroling neighborhoods fighting crime!!

The TR police dept. is undermanned by 20 patrol officers. Contractors should hire police reserves or other properly vetted and deputized rent-a-cops for roadside duty.
Why should 100,000 residents suffer through this day-and-night crime wave... while a few backhoes get police protection with taxpayers footing the bills?

For my first post to this forum, I would like to start off by saying, I'm not here to cause drama or arguments. I am here to state facts, when facts are known. So here are my facts related to your comments.
When a police officer is working a construction job, he is being paid SOLEY by the company that is out there working. He is not being paid for by taxpayer dollars. The fee the company pays, pays him, pays the town for gas for the vehicle AND insurance in case the officer were to get hurt. The Officers working the jobs are doing so on their days off, or prior to or after their regular shift. An officer at a construction job is not taking away from an officer being on the road. So if you were to put that officer "on the road" to have more patrol, you would actually be paying him overtime, because he would be working on his day off. If you want more police, your taxes have to go up, because the PD will have to hire more, or hire guys on overtime to increase the patrols. FYI the same thing goes for guys working DWI GRANTS, and seatbelt checks etc..they are specifically assigned that detail, and not "taking away" from the number of cops patrolling.

"If you want more police, your taxes have to go up."
Thanks for the insight about cops at construction sites.
However, I don't recall that my TR prop. taxes went DOWN because the mayor & twp. council have left our PD 20 cops short. Burglars are having a field day!
There's lots of wasteful spending in other areas of the twp. budget (MUA appointees, for instance) that could be eliminated so that residents are safer.

I completely agree. They may save money in one spot but then spend it somewhere else. Just like the pension and benefit reforms Christie Passed. Yes it may save the town millions on paying into pensions but there is nothing that says that money now has to be used as tax relief. Most towns will probably look at it as "found money" and use it to fill other budget gaps. So I agree with you on that one

Certainly being 20 officers short in the PD is an issued however the PD is completely miss managed. I understand that the PD is on two different shifts which only allows for 12 officers to be on the road patrolling. An acquaintance I know told me that the PBA wants to go on a 12 hour shift but the Chief won't allow it. That type of shift, which many PD's locally work would double the man power per shift. The State Police use it! So why can't the TRPD!

TR Patch -- please ask the chief and the PBA about that. The almost-daily burglary news reports have us all very concerned. We need more cops patrolling our neighborhoods NOW.
