Toms River Mayor Updates Hurricane Sandy Issues

Mayor announces updates for important issues in Toms River

The following information as submitted by Mayor Tom Kelaher's office overnight:

TOMS RIVER TOWNSHIP- While Town Hall is closed due to lack of power, officials are working around the clock to aid residents.  Toms River Township Mayor Thomas F. Kelaher has made a list of immediate priorities for the residents affected by the storm.  Mayor Kelaher will send out periodic updates, so please check the website often.

FEMA
Kelaher says, “My number one priority is to have all residents who have damage to their homes, contact FEMA as soon as possible, starting right now. The Federal Emergency Management Association has declared New Jersey as a major disaster area, which means that residents are entitled to Federal funding to help recover and rebuild homes.”

Toms River Engineers will be out to help inspect sites, and assessments will be made quickly so that businesses can open and homeowners can return to their houses.

To contact FEMA, use their website at www.FEMA.gov or call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362)

Garbage and Recycling Collection
The Department of Public Works will resume a normal schedule starting Monday, November 5th.  There WILL be garbage pick up on Election Day.

Leave all brush and debris on your curb to be picked up.  Other than hazardous waste and pilings, all bulk items will be accepted.  Anything that was exposed to salt water will corrode and should be replaced quickly to prevent mold build up.

Power
JCP&L is focusing on the mainland areas to restore electricity.  Residents can expect to see power restored to homes and businesses along the Route 37 corridor first.  JCP&L currently has 4,000 people on the ground working to get power lines restored.

Shelters
As of today, residents that are being housed in shelters may need to be transported to a Burlington County shelter long-term, or find temporary housing in the area.  More updates will be provided daily.

When can I check on my home?
Police Chief Mike Mastronardy said that residents of the barrier island MIGHT be able to visit their homes as early as Monday, November 5th but only with a Police escort.  Downed power lines, large amounts of sand in the roads, and massive debris prevent people from traveling safely through the area.  Residents of Ortley Beach will NOT be allowed to live in their homes because the gas lines will be shut off to the entire barrier island.

Bob Hannah, President of the Board of Public Utilities, said on a statewide conference call that the Natural Gas system is so comprised that it must be shut off.  From Mantoloking to Seaside Park, the complete system must be abandoned and rebuilt.  “It could be a month, at best, before homeowners can reuse gas stoves.  We need to shut off and purge the system, and all of that gas must be released into the air, “ Hannah stated.  A plume of methane gas will be in air.  It’s not dangerous, but there will be a foul smell.

Schools
Toms River Regional Schools Superintendant Frank Roselli said that Toms River Regional Schools would be closed through next week, November 5-9.  Students will only miss two more days of school, because classes were not scheduled on Election Day and on November 8 & 9 for an NJEA conference.

Trick-or-Treating
Governor Chris Christie has designated Monday, November 5th for trick-or-treating.

Questions
For non-emergencies and questions about road closures, contact the Toms River Police Department at 732-349-0150

Check back later for an update from Mayor Kelaher regarding Donations, Elections, Recreation, the Senior Center and Power Restoration.  Updates will be sent to the media as well as on the Township website at www.TomsRiverTownship.com

In the South Seaside Park section of Berkeley Township, we have no water, or ice and the Township has it 17 miles away, yes 17 miles away on Route 9. Why cant they set up a relief center on the island? We are constantly ignored while paying the highest taxes in the entire township.

how are you allowed to even be there. It is evacuated, therefore not an area they are going to set up a center because no one is supposed to be there

Any news as to when we might be able to return to our south seaside park houses to check on the status and get some personal belongings?

I agree with Mom. How can they say it's not safe to go to school next week but it's ok for them to walk rhe streets trick or treating. Besides the fact most people are without power so where are they going to go?

by monday most will have power and the school closings is because of the gyms and cafeterias being used for shelters. By the end of next week most people will be relocated to main shelters throughout the state. If I had children I would bring them out trick or treating, we need to find a little happiness within all the sadness.

I read this article, I read the one from Gov. Christie. Anyone on here know any details about the pretty much complete loss to power yesterday in Holiday City Berkeley? If anyone is in the know, any idea about when power will be restored to HCB area?

I talked to someone today who lives in another Holiday and they have power to there community. Wonder what happened.

Here is a whole lot of love and best wishes from the west coast town of Crescent City, CA (our residents have experienced tsunami's) to strengthen you in whatever way we can by doing so. You have to know how many in America are feeling what you must be going through and feel as neighbors to you, one and all!

The message from the school said they were closed for the safety of the children because some roads are impassible and some schools no power.

Thank God for this article.

It is literally thr FIRST time I have seen a written article from an authoritive person that gave us island property owners any clue of when/how we will ever get back on the island.
What did they forget how to use the Internet?
And FEMA, don't get me started. First of all, it's the same old government beuracracy. Second, if your island home is a second home, you get NOTHING from FEMA, or any other government program. Why don't they publish this, so that 90 percent of island homeowners don't have to waste their time figuring this out. Hello, uncle Sam. Let's have more Fed Government Obama, so we can have more waste.

Don't get me started.

This is the first statement from the mayor distributed since the storm. We'll keep posting them. Another came from Paul Daley, TR OEM, and is up now for Saturday: http://tomsriver.patch.com/articles/toms-river-and-hurricane-sandy-saturday-updates

Better to cancel the trick or treating this year than to risk one child being hurt. Still too many neighborhoods with no power, trees down etc.

Here's a thought, if trick or treating is so important then why not host it at the Ocean County Mall during day light hours. This way the kids can get they're sugar buzz and stay safe too.

The mall's not a bad idea - when I worked there years ago the stores held their own trick or treat and kids would go store to store.

Parents should go and supervise and stay clear of wires etc! I wish I could take my kids trick or treating but I was afraid they were getting colds so off to grandparents they went at 615 this morning. Ill join them after a dr appt I'd not b able to get to bc of nys 3 or more in car or you must travel certain routes like the bridges etc to get to nj from 12 am to 6 am.

Fema is a joke. How many thousands of these homes are vacation or second homes? Most of them and we will get zilch to rebuild or repair. Every homeowner should get help somehow. And do i still pay taxes and utilities on a home i cant even use? What is that answer?

don't the homeowners have insurance on these properties? flood insurance required, i'm sure. use that insurance. FEMA is so people are not left homeless from the storm.

I do sympathize with all the Homeowners, but what about Us Renters that live on the barrier islands all year. I live in Seaside Heights all year. I have all my belongings left there. What are we supposed to do? What will FEMA do for us?

How about following the Mayor of Lavalette who only posted positive photos of his town we are all aware of the devistation which hit Orthley we would also want to see our homes which are still in tact my home is on 223 Delmuth Ave I am sure many others would like to see as many blocks in town to get an idea what to expect when we are TO GO DOWN. One of our many concerns is the water left in the pipes and we would like to go down and turn the faucets, drain the toilet before before the pipes freeze and bust causing more interior damage. please include some positive photos and what about tax payments for homes no longer there, utilities? will they be charging minimum paymts. Are only homeowners expected to make sacrifices? I also do not have flood insurance which I cancelled in the last couple of years we have been there for 32 yrs and never had water until now!!!! My thoughts and prayers go out to those who lost their home, God give you the strenght you will need in the coming weeks and months. We are strong people and we will SURVIVE
