Toms River Regional's Summer Reading List Spans Genres
District suggests classics, new nonfiction, inspiring memoirs
Toms River Regional students looking to enjoy a good book or get a leg up on the coming school year can use the district's summer reading list, which itemizes its suggestions by grade level and genre.
The list is for high schoolers in the district, those entering grades 9 through 12, and spans genres from English Literature classics (Oliver Twist) to nonfiction gender studies (Good, the Bad, and the Barbie: A Doll's History and Her Impact on Us).
Each of the Honors selections are well known classics — Dickens, Faulkner, Hemingway. There's dozens of very different books to choose from, and the list is broken down by topics such as Girl Talk, Ballers, Not-So-Happily-Ever-After and Cool Story Bro, among others, giving some reading suggestions based on interest and age. Many of the books are newer titles and emerging authors.

The HS kids are REQUIRED to read 1 book from the list and answer questions...
Language Arts Honors students are required to read 2 books.
I think all HS kids should be required to read 3 books during the summer.
Question is, do they have enough books in the Ocean County Library system to accomadate as MOST HS in Ocean County are requiring reading 1-2 books during the summer... some with same books TRSS has.

JD, do you know what this assignment is...it is reading the 1 book (2 for Honors) then answering 4 questions about the book. It is a no value assignment that the kids can BS their way through without reading the book. How about they read 3 books for the Summer AND actually do a REAL assignment pertaining to the books.

I have no problem with your suggestion...
I have no problem with "real assignment" instead of the 4 questions...
but right now... it's better than nothing... last year, summer read was optional!!
My daughter read 6 books this summer.... 3 from the summer read list... why, because I told her she HAD to read 5 books minimum for the summer. lol

Why can't summer vacation just be summer vacation? Summer is for having a good time, earning a little money working a part time job, and just being with friends. My daughter probably read 10 or more books this summer, because that's what she enjoys doing. My son on the other hand doesn't enjoy reading books. He rather read a science magazine or watch the history channel or national geographic. So what??? Is a kid's GPA, or future going to suffer if they don't read a book for 2 months? Please ...... I'm tired of people telling everyone what to do on their own personal free time. In another week, they'll be back to reading things they don't care to read for the next 10 months. My kids are straight A students. They're very intelligent hard working kids in and out of school. I'm not knocking reading, or education in any way. I just feel like there shouldn't be summer assignments.
