Town Adopts Name for Softball Complex

Opening day celebration slated for June 16

Committee members disclosed the name of the softball field on North Bay Avenue as Toms River Veterans Softball Complex, at the recent Recreation meeting.

An opening day celebration will be held June 16 at 2 p.m., said Eric Schubiger, recreation director.

The event will feature softball players from throughout the years in Toms River, as well as a special dedication of a monument on site. The monument recognizes the history of the site, which began as a community of egg and chicken farmers, many of which were Jews escaping persecution.

Other issues discussed at the recreation committee meeting included the potential for a spray park in Toms River. “We’re headed in the right direction, and I think we’re on our way to get approval,” Schubiger said.

No location has been set for the seasonal water playground for children, but Schubiger said he is considering somewhere near a beach water area. The water would be recycled through a pump, he said. “It’s like a pool, and shouldn’t take significant work. We’re not talking about a year-long project.”

Also, the indoor tennis facility passed the council’s budget, and Councilman John Sevastakis said money is in the budget for a full feasibility study for the project.

The indoor tennis facility previously was the most sought-after recreation option, according to the survey on the Toms River website, until the skate park bumped it out of first place.

Have you seen the new Police cars? Did we really need so many of them? We could have spent some of that $ hiring another officer or two.

Really? Where were you last year when the At-Large and Mayor sweep your team mates? Now you have to wait four years for another Mayors race. Also your pathetic Dem team has no one to run against the R's in this upcoming Ward 3 and 4 race. So you need to really need to tell your bud Luthman he needs to regroup.

we do have high crime and police cars are not going to stop it. that's all we need-more cops and sanitation workers having their coffee behind wawa. or watching people talk on cell phones and not do anything about it. (it's against the law)

Maybe we would have less crime , but the cops are to bust getting their coffee and donuts at Wawa and pullling over people for not wearing a seat belt. If this is all they are doing than I think we have too many cops.

I don't see a need for an indoor tennis court.
Anything the town does.... will lose money!!!
The golf course loses money, the ice rink loses money.. etc etc.. get the picture.
They won't raise prices because pricing becomes a political issue... and councilman are swayed by the voters regarding pricing.
They can build it... so long as the pricing for rentals are say at least 90% of that of Wall's Atlantic Club. If they are willing to put in an ordinance to such then I would support it.... otherwise taxpayers will be subsidizing a frivolous expense.

Concession will be run by Toms River Girls Softball League; They are paying the town $500 for 2 months to run it for June & Aug... The Rec Dept said it would go out to bid but they LIED.... They also said that other teams could use the fields...not just TRGSL ...there are more than 1 travel teams in town; Met with mayor , council and rec dept and they all are in intertwined lying people... State money and it is a monopoly

The uncharted costs with any town expenditures is the long term maintenance costs. Thats what buries every public project into a sea of debt, corruption and greed.
How bout we elect a NON party person who has no axe of pockets to fill? Or are we so stupid to think you need experience to due public service? Anyway, would love to see more motorcycle cops then Dodge Challenger POS, at least the cycles are great on gas....

There are over $500,000.00 a year just in salaries to run the ice skatiing rink, and did you look at the circle of people who teach, schedule and coach in this league. I don't even know what it cost to sponsor, the Toms River taxpayer paid team to play, I can't say about the Golf course, but something is wrong when the town wants to change the Fees. show me where they are making a profit.

Ken, come on there partner. You cannot shake a stick in Town without hitting one of the Mayors cronys from the Toms River Rep club. They all work in town , some with very nice paychecks. The Toms River Rep club roster looks like a who's who in Toms River dept head job's.

It's in the budget...
They are not self-supporting!!! LOL
Lots of other costs on other line items.... when you add it all up... golf course and ice rink both lose money...
They won't raise rates either!!

Then why are they always looking for more money from the Voters of the Township at Budget Time for upkeep and new equipment....self sufficient "BS". Maybe that would be good place to have the indoor tennis facility or, children's water park or, even the skateboard park. not saying that the ice rink is not used to it fullest? but every time I go past there (twice daily at various times) there are only very few vehicles seen there, and those are most likely only the staff.

So does this mean the Skate park that most people voted for isn't going to be built? I agree with a softball complex considering both TR baseball little leagues have a decent arena but a skate park is something that could benefit the town as well. No more kids skateboarding, loitering, littering, vandalizing TJ Maxx, Seacourt, or Ocean County mall parking lots... do they even do that anymore? I know I did when I was that age, lol.

Dennis most of the population in Toms River voted for a skate park? How many 10s of thousands voted for it? We are being taken for enough tax dollars, we do not need a skate park!

Ken, I don't want to pay a cent more of tax than the next guy... I'm was jsut saying there as a vote for new amenities for the area and the skate park was one of the favorites. The article was read here at the Patch that had a link to take you to the township site to vote. Being that the spray ground was also in the vote and now there is one planned for this complex for softball I was curious if the skate park was omitted.
We are all going to be bent over for our hard earned wages via the tax monster, I'd just like to see it go towards something kids can do rather being harassed by snooty shoppers at the malls, incompetent security guards, and I'm sure the TRPD have better things to do than chase kids from one parking lot to the next just because they want to skate.

my guess is there are alot of township drones on this thread. The ICE rink supports itself? Oh my lord you are out of your mind, that place gets township money every year and supports a hockey team with tons of members from Jackson. Wake up I am there all the time, place is a money pit. Great guys who work / run it, but support itself, no way. Anyway the people involved in baseball in this town are jack-a$$es who all think their kids are the next coming of Jeter. Wake up its a game and your kid is competing with the DR, Cuba, Tokyo, and Panama. All roads lead to after hours mens league and the bill for the grass cutting of the ball field. Cry baby, dont think so, ticked off landlord of our public grounds, YES.

detailing themselves, did that save like $200 bucks on a $50k car, what a deal... I support the cops, but new cars helping reduce crime, wow, people are just getting fatter, dumber every day. I would have rather seen 5 more cops and a few more oil changes / tune ups on the old cars or even a few more vests so the cops dont have to do fund raisers for them. The drones just dont get it, its not about spending the money its the way its spent. "PLAY BALL" cus "ITS FOR THE CHILDREN" and "ITS THE CHILDREN who are gonna wind up with the bill"... Anyway, enjoy the weekend.

Better to give the kids something to do, softball, hockey, skating, than running around amok in the neighborhoods and since it will be the same exact people complaining about that on another part of Patch I wonder just what is it that you want. Good luck to the new softball complex and the girls who will be using it.

Where are they getting all this money to build these things and upkeep them. Oh yeah that's right they get it from th huge taxes they charge us homeowners!!!!!

If EVERYONE files a tax appeal for their over assessed property, then their would be NO extra money to spend foolishly. I'll be doing this every year until I get to the senior tax freeze. They already cut me and my neighbors values by $60K for each of our homes.

The naming of this complex had nothing to do with the vote...it has to do with honoring those who served our country and allow us to have the freedoms we have. In all of Toms River there was not one thing dedicated to these individuals. The naming of this complex took over a year to go through the proper channels so stop the bickering and pay respect to the men and women who served this country!.
