Traffic Lights Out As Power Outage Hits Toms River And Brick
Police directing traffic on Route 9
Jersey Central Power & Light reported 557 customers in Toms River were without power Friday night, and 1,500 in Brick were also powerless.
Police confirmed the Route 9 corridor in Toms River was affected, with traffic lights at Cox Cro Road out. Toms River Police were on scene directing traffic in Pleasant Plains and North Dover.
The power outages come after a thunderstorm swept through Ocean County.
JCP&L released a statement urging safety: "JCP&L is experiencing power outages throughout our service area. Crews are working to restore power to all affected areas as quickly and safely as possible. If you have not yet reported your service as being out, please use the report an outage link or call 1-888-544-4877. If you are experiencing a life threatening emergency call 911. Remember to treat all downed wires as live and dangerous."
For Toms River, the National Weather Service says thunderstorms were possible through 9 p.m. "Scattered showers and thunderstorms before 9 p.m.. Partly cloudy, with a low around 72. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms."

Every time Mother Nature hiccups, JCP&L has power outages. Old wires, old poles, old transformers, etc. What have they been doing with all the new dollars we pay for electricity -- just sending it to corporate headquarters in Ohio?

Of course. Corporate profits up, while the infrastructure languishes. Power grid across the entire country is on borrowed time.

This company HAS to be joking. There were never as many power outages in the past. Jcp&L gets funding for power outages they can't "control" for extended periods of time. I know many employees that work for this god forsaken power company. They have a "Cut it and Run" protocol. They cut wires if live but don't restore power. Longer times with no power equals more money from state. Directly from the employees on this one

Sometimes this makes sense. Cutting the power to multiple areas when wires are down and then going back later to repair the damaged lines makes a larger area safe. Time spent restoring power with other live wires down can be dangerous.

No wonder Seaside Heights is generating their own electricity.

Seaside does not generate electricity, they deliver it. They buy it wholesale from JCP&L. They own and maintain the infrastructure within the town and bill the residents directly. Seaside is a managable size and they do it with 4 employees in the elctrical department. Think of the fiasco if Brick ran its own utility....they can't even run municipal services properly.

Very soon Lakewood will need their own power plant. 250,000 residents within next 10 years. Driving on Rt 70 and Rt 9 should be a hoot.

SO tru! It's incredible that tons of people flocked to a town with a one lane road like rte, 9 in the first place, What WERE they thinking? I wonder how many school busses there are in Lakewood - they all seem to be on rte, 9 at once in the afternoon!

The power companies charge so much to cover the forced mandates by the crooked politicians. Utility taxes are passed on to rate payers. so are the solar credits and other scams like "free or reduced" rates for low income freeloaders. Nothing is free. The cost is passed on to rate payers. Same with phones, water and gas. Free solar is the big scam now. The state makes the power company give rebates for solar power and flouresent lights and bulbs and retrofitting. They pass the cost to us. This is called "green" energy. Wait till Obamacare hits you....LOL...LOl....LOL

His Largeness Guv Christie grabbed the utility franchise fees and put them in his state budget, instead of letting them go to municipalities as they always have.

These people have every right to complain after reading these stories. If you live in certain parts of Toms River, power has been out for 9 hours, 14 hours etc. Try loosing a refrigerator full of food after a big shopping trip! In all of these years, JCP&L has not improved too much.

JCP&L just told me ETA of 9:30am to have power restored in brick, and in the same breath they had no idea what happened. How can you quote an ETA. To repair withno clue as to what the problem is? Sounds fishy to me

It's like living in a third-world country. Isn't the state Board of Public Utilities going to investigate JCP&L for its failure to maintain basic services in NJ through rain showers and full moons? Isn't it going to stop giving them automatic rate increases?

I lost one cable box on this outage. The power kept on coming on and off, It be on for 1/2 hour off then go off for 10 minutes, And this was way after the storm.
I'm sure the surges of power going on and off blew the box, I'm just waiting to see what else dosn't work..or work right. Come on JCP&L get with the program. I'll send you the repair invoices..

It seems the line fuses and substations aren't properly doing their job. If current cannot be kept at a steady voltage or rises above a certain limit a fuse is supposed to blow protecting the equipment. I've never experienced that sort of thing where I live, with LIPA it usually goes out and stays out instead of trying to reenergize a bad circuit.

Not so sure about Seaside Heights generating their own electricity. Jcpl is awful, just heard this AM that because of the EPA rules on coal, rates are expected to go from $16 mkw to $136 per mega kw by 2015. That's like a $1000 a month bill.thanks o bomma

Losing power for a few hours is not the end of the world.Keep fridge shut and be careful of candles.Always have your cell phone and ipads ect. powered up and you will be fine. It could be worse look at India 620 million people lost power .And remember a young man just lost his life trying to restore power to our community.

I'm trying to see what JCP&L's problems are caused by. Their distribution poles look decent with the spacer cables, but the subtransmission lines that go out from the substations aren't in the best shape. The crossarm style on those (like upside down RR tracks) is quite susceptible to lightning strikes which burn out transformers, knocking out power. While the utlity where I live (LIPA) has cheap-ass distribution poles, the subtransmission network is on newer poles with armless construction, less likely to be damaged by lightning strikes. So large township wide outages aren't common unless in the most severe of storms. Take a look along Chambers and Cedar Bridge Roads by Brick Blvd, those are aging subtransmission poles that should've been replaced years ago. JCP&L sorely needs to upgrade this part of their network. Especially since the storms are getting worse due to climate change, and the fact that the rising air over the Pine Barrens feeds these storms. It's cheaper in the long run to upgrade the network, than have lost revenue and damaged equipment from outages. Something similar happened to a line in Holiday Heights a couple of weeks ago, blew several substations when it should've detected the fault and de-energized. There really needs to be an investigation into JCP&L's equipment.
