UPDATE: One-Year-Old Hospitalized After Two Vehicles Collide Near Toms River North

Boy was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center

A 1-year-old boy was hospitalized after two vehicles collided Thursday morning on Bey Lea Road, Route 571, at the Toms River North High School side entrance.

The son of Christian Kane, 40, of Toms River was in a child seat behind his father when a westbound truck struck their van in the rear, police said. The truck was operated by Kenneth Renae, 22, of Point Pleasant.

The boy was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center with a head injury, police said.

The road was closed in both directions between Old Freehold Road and North Bay Avenue while police investigated the accident, police said.

The van was also traveling westbound on Bey Lea Road and turning left onto North Drive when it was struck by the westbound delivery truck, police said.

The road's traffic was directed into Toms River North's parking lot and a nearby doctor's office.

Two ambulances and as many as six police cars were on the scene.

That's true JR. We have file photos we use when we can't get to the scene or it's not appropriate, etc. If you ever find the use of a photo questionable you can write us at tomsriver@patch.com.

I live off of Bay Ave- This section of the road where the accident occurred is very dangerous. Despite the 45 mph speed limit, people often drive down it at 50+ mph- I swear a few people have flown pass me pushing 70... Another issue is on the westbound side, there is very little shoulder- anyone trying to make a left into Bey Lea Brook or TR North have to risk being hit by people flying around them on what little shoulder there is...My husband and I have written to town councilmen and asked them to have the police in town monitor that road better. We never heard back and nothing seems to have changed since we wrote them a few months ago. We walk our dog down the sidewalk on rare occassions and are often times fearful of what would happen should one of these cars crash driving so fast around the bend. They really need to do something about this issue before more people get hurt. I hope the little boy and his family are doing well...

You can't?....isn't an amber light mean ....go faster....insn't a STOP sign mean roll right thru....or a turn lane ONLY , mean go straight. Go down to Rite Aide on Route 166 where there is a sign on the south bound side that shows a SIGN no left turn and a double yellow line, tell me what that means?

Just means.... the driver of the minivan is at fault also...

IMHO... roads with 2 lanes in each direction (4 lanes) should have concrete barrier separating the roadway as well as decent shoulder on each side (3 ft min).
Lots of accidents on this stretch of Bey Lea between Hooper and Old Freehold Rd.

I hope texting while driving wasn't involved. I drive the GSP during the week for one hour each way. In my opinion, there is a great increase of drivers who are texting while driving or talking on the cell phone. I'm hoping for stricter laws, however I do see law enforcement doing it as well.

I guarantee the kid driving was texting or changing the song on his ipod. If there is proof of phone activity during the time of the accident, the kid should go in jail. The little boy Gavin's entire face is broken and he is still unconscious and may be in a coma. Please pray for him.

very sad that people are more concerned with how it happened instead of focussing on baby Gavin, i know the dad very well and the baby is literally fighting for his life right now. Please everybody put all your energy in praying for Gavin and his mom and dad. No parent should ever have to deal with this tragedy let alone a one year old baby. Ive been sick since the news broke. Keep fighting Gavin - we are all pulling for you

It goes without saying that I'm concerned for the child. I was simply commenting on the story and adding to the dangers of texting while driving. Praying for a quick recovery and for God to comforted the family members in their time of need. Thank you for accentuating us, Ms. Middleton

So sad. You think your child is safe in his car seat and something like this happens. At this point, it shouldn't matter who is at fault. It was an accident, no one set out for this to happen that day. Let's all hope that this little boy recovers. I am sure his father is suffering enough without having to read about whether or not he is at fault.
