Gov. Chris Christie visited Seaside Heights Monday morning to mark the opening of a satellite Home Depot location.

The newly-opened Home Depot satellite location in Seaside Heights will play a "central" part in helping local barrier island residents recover from Superstorm Sandy, said Gov. Chris Christie.

"Home Depot is going to be a place that is going to be central to providing us with the supplies we need to make the recovery real and the assistance that we need to help folks get their work done as quickly as possible," Christie said during a Monday morning grand opening celebration.

The store, located on Sumner Avenue in the same building as the White Pearl Hotel, employs disaster specialists with an aim of providing consultations and arranging delivery of goods to Sandy-stricken residents on the barrier island.

During the visit to Seaside Heights, Christie also told onlookers that New Jersey has submitted its disaster recovery plan to the federal government and expects some action in about 3-4 weeks.

Lots of mom and pop's work at Home Depot getting larger wages than the mom and pop's pay. Follow the store owner's home and you would realize they keep most of it for themselves.

I find it hard to believe that a store front that doesn't have anything in stock is "central" to anything. But, nice try!

Maybe he can get a tax abatement to build a Walmart too, while he is putting his foot in his mouth?

I was at this location today. It's just a design center, really pushing installed sales. On one end depot wants the contractor to shop with them, and on the other they want to do the install themselves. Either way, if you want a tube of caulk, they cant help you.

This is so true and their installations are horrid, using people no one else will hire.

Everything they "install" is contracted out to the lowest bidder. If you think you can get hardwood flooring installed at $1 square foot and get a quality job, keep dreaming.

Someone should see if Boss Gilmore the republican chairman of Ocean County and Seaside Hts. attorney is on the Home Depot payroll? He was on the Ashbritt payroll for clean up, and Walmart for the new Manchester location.

Yeah go to seaside lumber. Where you can buy a tube of caulk that was floating around the store in October and has a no returns policy. You get what you pay for.

I will buy a tube of caulk from Seaside Lumber. I have found them to be very customer friendly for decades. If we want Seaside to really come back we need to support more than the bars and a few boardwalk businesses that are open. Seaside Lumber is open and there should be a line to buy supplies.

Wow . Such haters . I happen to know many many people employed by Home Depot ... LOCAL people getting real paychecks and providing for their families . ...I also know that besides providing job security to locals - they also donated 20,000 just TODAY to waves for water and waves for hope -both non profit organizations that help displaced LOCAL residents who aren't able to get back in their homes .
Home Depot also donated a million dollars towards the relief efforts.
Just because it is a large corporation - don't assume they are here to take down other businesses ....
They are jersey strong !
They are your neighbors... Friends .. And family working there- and proud to be a part of the recovery efforts .

One of several high profile Republicans urging Christie to run for president in last year’s election, Langone in October 2011 told Charlie Rose he tried the hard sell: "I did everything but kiss him on the lips." - Star-Ledger

It is common sense - wonderful that Home Depot has opened an annex in Seaside. BUT why didn't we highlight Seaside Lumber as we are focusing on rebuilding the shore and it is only a block away. It is one of the few fixtures that remains. Priorities are skewed. Not surprised.

He mentioned that from his helicopter he could see all the repair still needed, I hope he took the long way home and drove the island, instead of jumping back off. I made the ride today, very little going on. Businesses that seem to be sticking it out are working on them, or open, but most homes just sit there, in whatever condition they happen to be in. As for the depot, to heck with a showroom, we need real stores, the 2 available on the island are not enough for the tens of thousands of homes that need repair work. Give me box stores, mom and pop, I really don't care.

How about woodhaven lumber, Allied, lowes, lavallette hardware, seaside lumber, Atlantic aluminum, all the contractors, building material distributors, mills, the guys that chop trees down, all are making more money because material is needed. Welcome to America... Not for nothing.

If you took Home Depot and all the above mentioned suppliers and contractors, we still need more supplies and more help. We need corporate help ,local help and political help from both parties. Anyone who has seen the damage and worked in the field knows we will all need to work together for years to rebuild the shore.

The damage from this storm needs more than a home depot . I wonder how much over market value the taxpayers are paying to rebuild the boardwalks ,probably the same deal assbritt gave us !

@Re-tired, we are all paying over market. I had a price of $18,000 before the summer to raise my house. I spoke to the same company in January who said that it will probably be about $22,000 because of building material increase. I said ok mail me the contract. The contract came a week ago, $43,000. Same job, same company, Before the summer the company was making good money raising a house here and there at there original prices. Now they have 1000s of them and they are charging more than double.

There will be many businesses that will not be ready as the insurance has not been paid due partly to the fact that there were restrictions on access after the storm. Glad to see the boardwalk progressing and the hardy businesses that are open.

i have spoken,,,go drive all the way to those big stores, between gas and time your an idiot. Mom and pops are not more expensive, do the research. Then while you are in lowes try to ask a question or find help, good luck. I will install 6 windows by they time you get back, and if u forgot something or your paint was mixed wrong by the disabled person drive back. The hardware store in lavallette is priced the same, even if it was a lot more i would support them instead of supporting government gas, and big corps. That store is small and has everything including 1 intelligent worker every 10 sq ft..Contractors know where to go on the island. But you go to lakewood for the kosher box of screws

Seaside Lumber is my family business. We have been in the community for over 60 years, through good times and bad. We were hit hard, just like everyone else, but are open and trying to do our part for the rebuilding efforts. There has been a groundswell of support for people to buy locally, and hopefully will continue to support us.
To Shoreguy, yes we had caulk floating around, along with numerous other items, as is the case when you have 3 feet of water come through your store.....and I, like many others was there, digging through what was left of their homes, businesses, and their lives really......cleaning up, sweeping up the black muck, and trying to put our lives back together. We are open, and hope you will come support us. The Home Depot's lease is for one year, and they have made it clear they intend to leave after, which one can assume they mean, "we want to make as much money as godly possible from this disaster, and then move on to bigger and better things." Hopefully, people will choose to support a business that has been part of the community, and will continue to be part of the community, rather than a large corporation that is only looking to add a few cents to their earnings per share. We'd certainly like to thank those of you who continue to shop with us, and hope that those of you that didn't know we were there will give us a shot.

You have the support of many in the community and surrounding areas. We will support continue to support Seaside Lumber. I am disappointed that the governor chose to support a large corporation instead of a local business that has reopened under insurmountable hardship.

You have my support as well, although I use lavallette hardware, it's closer to my home. I have visited the Home Depot showroom, it's built to compete with contractors, they are pushing installed services. This store will not take any sales from the local stores, if anything it will increase sales, as when I see a Home Depot sign, I assume I can buy material there. When a customer walks out upset, where will they turn? Jay, use this to your advantage, buy some ad space right outside pointing them to your business.

Thank you all for your support. It has certainly been a trying time for everyone. It's everyone's right to shop where they want and do what is best for them. We are trying to do what we can to get the word out, but our marketing budget is somewhat slim (pretty close to $0 actually). Lowe's had actually put up a trailer with advertising across the street from us, which thankfully the town removed, but it just goes to show what we are dealing with (and really many small businesses besides us, as I don't want to play the pity card, as I know other families and businesses are in just as bad, if not worse shape than us). But I do thank you both for your kind words, and hope that others will join in and buy locally, wherever you buy. For those of you on facebook, the Seaside Lumber site is https://www.facebook.com/Seasidelumber. Thanks again for all the support!
