Tria Deibert, director of marketing for Meridian Health, invited Toms River residents and businesses to participate in Paint the Town Pink month.

Toms River has been asked to go pink in May to raise awareness for the importance of annual mammography screenings.

Meridian Health Director of Marketing Tria Deibert spoke before the Toms River Township Council last week to urge residents, businesses and officials to get involved.

"We really would love for Toms River to become 'Pink River' in the month of May," Deibert said.

The goal of the awareness effort is to encourage woman ages 40 and up to have breast cancer screenings, as well as to raise money to help the underprivileged have checks, according to Merdian Health.

"It's a worthy cause and I'm sure that we'll be able to do that," said Mayor Thomas Kelaher.

A kick off meeting for the 2013 event will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, at the 8 Robbins St. Townsquare Media office. Those interested in attending are asked to contact Marian Haase at 732-962-7493 or MHaase@meridianhealth.com.

Paul, we have to be careful not to discourage support for breast cancer research and treatment. I'm sure we all would love to see a cure. Not every "PINK" group funds Planned Parenthood. Susan G Komen does divert donations to fund abortions through Planned Parenthood. I would suggest not donating to Komen, but do your research about other organizations who take donations to fight breast cancer. Breast cancer victims and unborn babies deserve the right to life. Let us try to save them all.

To Mayor zzzzzzz Kelaher..... where are you finding the time for this BS. You should be spending all your time on getting people back in their homes #1 and directing our illustrious road dept. to fix the roadways and pot holes littering the town. By the way, what genius directed the road dept. to dump mounds and mounds of sand all over the roadways and who is going to clean the mess. Boy I'll tell ya, you people have your priorities all backwards. Toms River will always be a WT town as long as you people are in office. But who cares your all 70+ and will be getting your big fat retirements and probably move from TR leaving your do nothing legacy behind. Thanks alot.

You are all ridiculous...support the cause or don't ...your political views are irrelevant to this article. Breast Cancer doesn't discriminate based on what your views of local politicians are, therefore, I hope NONE of you are ever faced with something so devastating.
