Workers on the barrier island for Toms River are under a mandatory evacuation starting noon Nov. 7. Mainland residents in low-lying areas are under a voluntary evacuation, the township announced.

On top of widespread devastation to flood-prone areas of Toms River, many of those same residents affected by Hurricane Sandy are urged to voluntarily evacuate Wednesday, Nov. 7.

Evacuees are being encouraged to register at the two shelters in Toms River: Toms River High School East on Raider Way and the Pine Belt Arena at Toms River North, Old Freehold Road and Route 571.

Low-lying areas include such waterfront sections of Toms River's mainland: East Dover, Snug Harbor, Bayshore, Green Island, Cambourne Shores, Pelican Island, Money Island, Gilford Park, Silver Bay, and downtown Toms River.

The update from Toms River Township:

"According to the National Weather Service, a coastal flood watch remains in effect from Wednesday morning through Thursday morning. Moderate flooding is anticipated around the times of high tide on Wednesday and Wednesday night. Water levels may not recede much between the two high tides.

Effective 12pm Wednesday Nov 7^th there will be a mandatory evacuation for anyone working or staying on the Barrier Island. There Is a voluntary evacuation for the low lying areas on the mainland effective 4pm Nov 7^th. Residents are encouraged to move to higher ground."

The National Weather Service has issued its coastal flood warning in effect 11 a.m. Wednesday through 8 a.m. Thursday. 

From the NWS:

• Moderate flooding is anticipated around high tides Wednesday. Water levels may not reced much between the high tides.
• In Seaside Heights, high tides are 12:48 p.m. Wednesday and 1:42 a.m. Thursday. A forecast tide level is 7 feet above mean lower low water. High tide on the back bays occurs later than on the oceanfront.
• Sea wave heights are expected to build into the 6 to 10 feet range.
• Expected impact: numerous flooded roadways; minor to moderate property damage possible. The elavated tides will have a negative impact on recovery efforts. Additional beach erosion expected.
