What's the worst section of Route 9?

Toms River Patch asks: Which section of Route 9 and Route 166 is the worst?

Route 9.

Which is also Route 166 at points in Toms River.

Also known as Main Street, Lakewood Road...or by many colorful descriptions when you're stuck in its traffic, bouncing out of its potholes, trying to turn off or on to its lanes and cursing its existence.

It's one of the most heavily trafficked roads in Toms River, and it has everything from single family homes, major shopping centers, historic buildings, a school, Garden State Parkway entrances, pedestrians to industrial complexes using it.

It might be hard to pick just one area, one intersection, but today Toms River Patch asks you: What's the worst section of Route 9?

Just last night, all of the Garden State Parkway northbound used Route 9 in Toms River due to a serious parkway accident. Later that same night, a traffic light came crashing down on Route 9 near Church Road, snarling traffic again.

Earlier this year, a bicyclist was struck and later died from injuries at the intersection of Route 166 and 37, a spot Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy has called one of Toms River's most dangerous intersections for vehicular and pedestrian traffic. It's also one where a gas main break snarled traffic last week, in preparation of the Dover Mall demolition.

And then we head south onto Main Street, where the road remains one lane each direction before it does a creative loop around the downtown post office before we bid it adieu on its journey into South Toms River and Beachwood.

We're talking about Toms River's portion of the road, which goes by many names. No need to split hairs that Route 9 hops onto the parkway in portions of Toms River, feel free to include all that too.

We want to hear it all.

Let's talk.

From County Line Rd in Lakewood to Lacey Rd in Forked River, Route 9 should be avoided at all costs.

This rt 9 is the nightmare! I travel this every day in my job and if you dont get road rage on that stretch in Lakewood and Toms River, you will never! I dont know what they plan to do about this 9 but then you compound the traffic nightmare with the big population of Jewish people, whom have no regard for lights, crosswalks, pedestrians you have issues. They come flying half way out unto 9 to cut anyone off so they may go,its unreal! The police seem to never bother these people who do this,I have seen it over and over right in front of the police. Please there has to be an engineer out there who can figure out a way to end this. Maybe build over 9! Something must be done,I for one am going to change jobs just not to deal with this 9 garbage any more!!!!!

Lakewood. Lakewood is THE WORST part of Route 9, hands down. There is only one lane for each direction of traffic, and many of the Jewish residents there will walk across the streets at night in front of you as your driving, and disregard traffic lights and crosswalks. Lakewood is any driver's nightmare.

I left a comment abou this on the article talking about tearing down the old bradles. They may start a new build there but it would eliminate the traffic bottleneck

definitly rt 9 and 571 intersection..sorely needs a left hand jughandle for the northbound traffic onto 571...also the traffic northbound drops from 2 lanes to 1 right after the light ..causes near gridlock at rush hour with the traffic from the parkway onto 9.....
