Ok so its been there since the 60's.. but how trashy is that going to look? Build a lil memorial for that side of the pier.. in terms of a board with pictures.. and call it a day. The last thing we need is a huge roller coaster sitting in the ocean just off our shore. Ugh..

That's crazy. Leaving a rusting hulk of a destroyed roller coaster is a tourist attraction? Sounds more like a tombstone to me. I can just imagine all the jetskis buzzing around it this summer and the young swimmers dared to try to swim out to it. Will they build a fence around it?

Do you really think the eye sore fits into the developers vision of the "New Seaside Heights & Seaside Park"? With the million of $$$ they plane to invest,this will not be part of the highend living they plan on bringing into these two towns.

Besides for the obvious safety concerns, surrounding people who think it will be "cool" to swim, boat, or otherwise try to get out to this - I think they should remove it from the ocean. Anyone with good memories surrounding this former attraction wants to remember it as it was BEFORE the storm hit, and not see this as a constant reminder of the devastation the hurricane caused.

One of the most rediculous comments I've ever heard. Is this guy serious. For one thing I think he should be pre occupied with rebuilding his town, and your more worried about tourism right now. There's hundreds of people still without homes lets give them a home to come back to first then worry about that. And the last thing I want to remember as a local is seeing that roller coaster in the water every time I'm at the beach and remember the total devastation that took place that resulted in that roller coaster landing there. This is rediculous and I am embarrassed to say he's the mayor of my home.

As a resident you should be used to the treatment we receive in our popular tourist political town. The residents always did and will continue to finish last. The businesses should just buy all the residential land and make it one big tourist attraction like Disneyland.

I think it is a good idea to leave the roller coaster in the Atlantic Ocean as a permanent statue as well as tourist spot in the future. Just make sure that it is fenced and nobody is allowed to get near to it.

I see it more a tourist attraction for the fish then the public. Knowing what we have seen over the summer, people are bound to try to climb the rollercoaster and could be seriously injured. Unless there is some plan to keep it fenced, but I dont see that happening.

This is the most ridiculous idea I had ever heard of in my entire life. What is wrong with these local knucklehead mayors or council members.

A decision hasn't been made on this issue, and I have been told that at least three of the borough council members weren't advised that this option is being explored by Mayor Akers. Residents should encourage the Borough Council not to cancel anymore council meetings. Important decisions will have to be made that require an open discussion with the full Council membership and residents/taxpayers.

An option? Explore? Explore common sense. Wish I lived there so I could get the mayor impeached for showing his stupidity in public, lol!

Leaving it as a tourist attraction isn't a great idea - but, by the same token, it shouldn't be on the top of the priority list to get rid of it either. We really don't know what will become of it if it is left where it is. I am not sure if a true expert has weighed in on what would become of it if it stayed there, and how it would affect ocean life, etc. Bottom line is that it should be the least of their concerns right at this moment.
As for the "Next Sandy" and whether it will be bigger and worse or if it will come sooner rather than later, nobody has any clue. They said the same thing about Katrina - warned about Isaac going a similar path - and it wasn't nearly as damaging to New Orleans. There were a lot of factors that need to come together almost precisely for Sandy to create the havoc to our coast - we should rebuild smartly to protect ourselves from future storms, but we also can't just throw out that another will be becoming in the near to mid future. That is just doomsday talk that isn't tied to anything truly scientific beyond global warming perhaps HELPING the storm - but not actually producing the storm.

Now is the time to remove it before corrosion sets in. The sooner the better. Once corrosion sets in it will be near impossible to get it out of the sand without it breaking apart. It will also continue to sink into the sand. They need to act now or risk the whole area within 200 yards needing to be permanently closed to bathers. If they act now they can get most of the coaster out in tact.

There are huge sections of barrier islands from Florida to Maryland where there are no structures because Flood Insurance is not available. At any price.

I'm so glad that others feel the same as me !! How terrible to leave a constant reminder of a tradgedy. The Mayor didn't really think this through. How can he actually think people want to be reminded on a daily basis of their losses and suffering. How insensitive. Just because a trashy tv program was allowed to be filmed there doesn't mean the trash has to stay !!!

I'm not sure a rusting, rotting, HUGE metal coaster, a good idea for a swimming, surfing, fishing area! Cross that idea right off the list and lets more on.

I think the comment to "leave it as a tourist attraction" was probably born out of an estimate of what it's going to cost to get that thing plucked out of the ocean and properly disposed of. He probably just wanted to see what the public's reaction might be to such an idea and if he could get away with it on the "cheap"!

Leaving that roller coaster in the ocean would not only be an "eye sore", and dangerous; but would also be a constant reminder of "devastation" to the people who lost their homes, cars, or personal belongings. Some people still have fond, cherished family memories from years ago, so not such a good idea.

To be honest with you, I'm now 57 years old and have owned property down in Seaside Park with my family all my life. I cannot ever remember them ever! doing major structural piling work underneath those piers. Yes, replacement sections have always been done topsides to the boardwalk, but to my recollection never anything to the underneath and the pilings. To me, I'm just glad the collapse of those sections happened when no one was on them. It was only a matter of time before it was going to happen anyway during a stressful event and thank God no one was one them when they went I say..... They will rebuild it, better and stronger this time I'm sure, but let's just be thankful that collapse didn't happen during a run of the mill Nor'easter with people in those bars out there and such....

The Seaside Coaster could be a world famous tourist attraction. Surfers could shoot the coaster. The Situation and Snooki could climb to the top and do a tandem double back flip into the water. MTV might even come back for another season!

Won't it be the state taxpayer who has no free beach access who pays to park and pays for beach passes who will foot the bill for those in shore town private residences? Just asking.

The government should mandate specific areas that are in danger of repeated flood disasters, because when all is said and done -- for example -- if the government gives you 100% of your loss to rebuild, as an example, it's all of us collectively that will be paying that tax bill. Now mind you, it's better than giving the money to Egypt and Pakistan but there's a limit to how much each of us can endure, whether it's rebuilding in a danger zone after having lost everything or the higher taxes to pay for it all.

As if Seaside isn't enough of a freak show already. This will make the town into more of a pathetic joke than it was.
