Photos Of Ortley Beach

A friend of a friend took some photos in Ortley Beach.

Hopefully these will help some people see their homes.

It is so ironic how we keep getting photos and videos, but homeowners and residents aren't allowed to get to their properties.

I read the list of rules and regulations to enter Seaside Heights in the next few days...it's kind of like going to kindergarten...sign in, sign out...ride the bus...half a day...our homes are damaged, destroyed, or missing, and they are removing any sense of dignity we might have left...sad.

Our family home is at 210 3rd Avenue. We have not seen any picture of either it or the neighborhood. Does anyone have any idea how it fared? Please - any information is truly appreciated.

My house is at 308 Shuster. From aerial views it seem that my house is still there but I would like to know how high the water rose in that area. Does anyone know.

Hello Dotty, this is Kevin. I believe the water came up to the door, I don't believe it came into the house.

This is what a few of us Ortley Beach residents witnessed this morning on Rt37. After 2 weeks and counting, NO ACCESS TO OUR PROPERTIES. With all the tax dollars that TR milks from us. We get a humiliating school bus ride to our properties for 1 hour with 1 suitcase to remove our belongings.

John, you are being a total ass. Why don't you stop with all your b*tching, moaning and complaining.
You are only adding to the stress, anxiety and paranoia victims are feeling. Stop it already.
You don't like how they are doing things, TOO BAD. Sometimes in life you don't get things "your way" no matter how big an a-hole you are.
You really should be ashamed of yourself turning this horrible, devastating situation into an opportunity for your anti-politician, anti-government, anti-everything RANTS.
Knock it off.

Mattie - It is a very bad situation. But if officials are not doing their jobs (local, state and federal all included), it's yours and John's AND everyone else's responsibility to question why things are not being done as they should. John is obviously frustrated and venting...his absolute right to do so. Perhaps through people venting their frustrations the next time something like this happens the government will be better prepared. I'm sure everyone is doing what they can but it's never a good idea to just sit back and let the government take care of you...it never turns out well. It's important to give credit where credit is due just as it's important to speak up for yourselves!!

Julia, Well I happen to disagree... I believe ALL the involved agencies, as well as local and federal government are handling this *unprecedented* horrible disaster as best as they can. Not that they aren't making mistakes, or couldn't do things better.... but just the best as they can.
You can disagree, John can disagree, everyone can disagree with me ... I'm fine with that. (actually, I'm used to that around here LOL)

What I take issue with is people like John and others posting over and over and over again in EVERY single article pertaining to the aftermath of this storm nothing but negativity, complaints, self-serving personal and political rants and all manner of personal attacks and rudeness because THEY believe the whole world is involved in some sort of grand conspiracy against them - or their town. It's ridiculous.
Sometimes someone just has to tell them to SHUT UP... that they are not helping matters in any way, nor making anyone else suffering as much, or even more than they are, feel any better about things.
Now even though I'm not the only one who has stepped up to tell John and others to knock it off already with their incessant complaining ... tell me why my telling them to tone it down - out of respect for everyone, is being vile and obnoxious as they are.

My parents house is 417 Harding Ave Ortley. We have not seen it nor have pictures. I grew up in Ortley and weep for all. Memories are now covered in sand. This is a time to united and help each other, not turn animosity to our officials who try to keep us safe. If anyone can get in and start taking requests of pictures it will ease a lot of peoples minds. Does anyone need animal help? I am a Humane Police Officer from Last Chance Ranch Animal Rescue in PA who spent a week after Katrina in the floods of New Orleans. We can help with evacuations and supplies if anyone is in need in shelters or homes. lori@lastchanceranch.org

Hey Mattie
We thought you and your HIGH IQ were done here? But I guess I hit a nerve and you decided to come back with some name calling.
Its more like if "YOU or SOME OTHERS" like the way things are, "TO BAD FOR YOU".
But "MY SELF and SOME OTHER" don't want to or have to sit back and wait. It has nothing to do with getting things my way, as you say.
So you can sit back with your thumb up your %&#, which I'm sure you probably do quite often, and enjoy.

You are so right about Lori. And I agree with you 100% on that.
Just as to all the people, including myself taking in families and helping others out.
Let the residence in, AFTER 2 WEEKS and you will see plenty of people helping people out.
And its has nothing to do with anyone being selfish, as YOU say. It has to to with you sit back with your thumb you know where and listening, and waiting. While some others don't. You're probably one of the city officials telling us to sit back and listen to you.

John/Mattie....This type of extreme divide between people on either side of the issue is certainly not helping the cause. The Police have ultimate control and we're at their mercy. This is a disaster/state of emergency to which the Toms River PD is in no way equipped to handle.....both in experience and manpower. I'm sure locking out the residents and keeping them 'out of the way' makes it far easier for them to try and develop a plan, but keeping them in the dark as to when a solution will be in place is no way to manage any process. A legitimate, non-partisan, professional, disaster management firm should be brought in to handle a problem of this magnitude. I am both a property owner and resident of Ortley and still can’t believe that in 2 weeks since the storm a process for allowing even temporary access to our properties still isn't in place. I know people have probably lost a great deal more than I have as a result of this storm....but my losses shouldn't be trivialized based how much more someone else lost. Nobody wins in a disaster....it's just about minimizing the impact it's had on you. Some may have lost everything, but without access to our homes, those who didn't will soon count themselves among those who have.

I have unsuccessfully tried to get any information at all from the township of Toms River and our elected government about my home and community of Ortley Beach. All other Barrier Island towns have kept their citicizen informed and up to date as to progress. My township has decided not to do that....just an occasional blurb. Now to add insult to injury they have scheduled the council meeting for 3 pm as to put yet another obstacle in our path . They don't want to see, hear or help us. I am digusted by their treatment.
I have seen photos taken that allow a visual from Rt. 35 S to the ocean.....strrets from 6th to fielder are clear of debris. Today I manuvered my way through and inbetween homes from CVS to Vision Beach. Although each and every house has debris the streets are free of debris. In speaking with State police from Maryland (extremely polite and sympathetic) they told me they were not allowed past the cememt barriers either , they were only to guard them. I am starting to think they are hiding something.

I fully comprehend that the Ocean blocks in Ortley are a dangerous place right now, but I think one of the underlying concerns here is that ultimately the Toms River DPW may be partially at fault for not securing the beaches with adequate dunes...both with routine maintenance and storm preparation. I understand that this was a storm of unprecedented fury, but if you look up and down the coast, the areas with adequately maintained dunes were spared the destruction experienced during Sandy. It wont be surprising if someone or a group of homeowners take legal action against Toms River for failure to maintain proper storm surge protection.

Barnegat Ray - A question for you: When you were in Ortley near Mia's did you happen to get a look up either Lanyard or Halyard towards Washington Ave? We have still not seen a picture near our place- it is the corner of 5th and Washington- just up from Lanyard (across from Docksider). Please respond if you have some info :(

Very well put Andrew.
Hey Mattie
You may write very well, but your obnoxious one here. With your personal attacks because some DON'T WANT TO see thinks your way. Your the one ranting and raving, name calling, drive into a sink hole, etc, etc..... I would be more than happy after 2 weeks taking my chances driving into Ortley, sink holes and all. Now you can go sit back in your taxpayer collecting job and continue to rant and rave.

Hey fellow Ortley residents!

Thank you for all the comments, and feedback.

I did not take these photos...they were passed to me from a friend of a friend...I am as frustrated as all of you are, as I cannot enter our beloved town either.

I read the recent notice of access...all I can say is that I am insulted, humiliated, and angry that they are treating us [adults] like we are in kindergarten! Confiscate our IDs to enter??? Take with us what will fit on our lap??? Police stationed at the perimeter of where we will be let off??? This whole thing is insane, and surreal...

Ortley Beach Re-entry Plan

The Toms River Police Department is implementing a plan to enable residents of the Ortley Beach Section of Toms River Township to re-enter the area. This plan will be enacted in two phases. Phase one will enable residents to retrieve personal items. Phase two will account for winterization and flood remediation.

Since the beginning of this event Toms River Township has acted in the best interest of our citizens. The Township is proud of the fact that we have had no loss of life or serious injury due to Hurricane Sandy.

PHASE #1

The plan is to include the following steps:
•Registration Site: Bellcrest Plaza 935 Fischer Blvd.
•Registration - To register the resident will provide a photo ID which will be surrendered and stored onsite with the registration form. They will then be given a carbon copy of their registration form (which becomes their ticket to board the bus) and a PASS to wear while in the affected area. Upon return to the mainland the resident will surrender the pass and their photo ID will be returned to them. (This will ensure that no resident is left behind).
•Each bus will have an officer accompanying it to the affected area.
•Entry to the affected area will be restricted to residents only. Two people per residence and proper identification (driver's license, tax or utility bill) is required.
•A perimeter will be established and manned by police officers around the area in which residents will arrive.

Barnegat Ray

12:41 am on Tuesday, November 13, 2012

•Residents will be transported to Ortley Beach from the Bellcrest Plaza (935 Fischer Blvd) Toms River via Toms River Regional School bus.
•A predetermined schedule (listing the streets to be addressed each day) will be posted on the Township website to advise residents what day to arrive.
•Residence will have a reasonable amount of time to retrieve items they deem essential to themselves and their families.
•These items will be limited to storage in a carry on suitcase that can be placed on the residents lap upon return.
•The homes and infrastructure in many areas have been severely damaged. As such, ALL RESIDENTS CHOSING TO VOLUNTARILY ENTER THEIR HOMES TO INSPECT/REMOVE PERSONAL ITEMS DO SO AT THEIR OWN RISK.
•Residents are reminded to use caution in and around their homes.
•Residents will not be permitted to wander to other unsecured areas.

SCHEDULE: Registration will take place at 08:00 at the Bellcrest Plaza 935 Fischer Blvd, Toms River.

08:00 to 08:45 - registration

08:45 buses leave for Ortley Beach.

The busses will make continual loops between the affected area and the registration site.

Wednesday 11/14/2012 - Rt. 35N to Rt. 35S Lavallette to Seaside Heights

Thursday 11/15/2012 TBA

Friday 11/16/2012 TBA

Saturday 11/17/2012 TBA

Sunday 11/18/2012 TBA

Monday 11/19/2012 TBA

The locations to be announced will be dictated by safety. The Toms River Building Department is working diligently to mark out hazards and we must follow their lead. There should be 48 hours' notice on the Township Website.

The busses will run between 08:45 and 3:00PM. All residents are to leave the Barrier Island by 3:00PM.

PHASE #2 -To be announced.

The geography of Ortley Beach changes daily. The State of New Jersey, Department of Transportation, the Township of Toms River and our partners are working feverishly to improve the roads in Ortley Beach. Many sinkholes have been observed and repaired but some remain un-remediated. Conditions improve daily but there is much work to do. The second phase of this plan remains fluid and will be posted as soon as practical.

Dottie, I am Kevin's (your next store neighbor in Ortley) sister-in-law...he responded to you days ago about your home (he stayed on Ortley during the storm). He thinks the water only came up to the first floor and not into the house. We all hope that is true! Good luck to you.

Suz,
You had answered me on another post about Barnacle Bills between 3rd and 4th on 35N. I really had appreciated the info you got. JFYI. It was totally destroyed. Water was at least 7feet high inside the arcade building destroying all the games, and the galley/restaurant and gold course are gone. At least one of the houses on the ocean side is resting on the golf course which is littered with debris from all over.

Anyone near that address, the water surge was 7ft. I'm so sorry.
