Where was the Toms River DPW before Sandy in Ortley Beach.

We own a home in Ortley beach (beach block for 30 yrs) In the past 2 years the Toms river Township had the nerve of raising our taxes (double). They claimed they were going to do street over and improve Ortley Beach, they have done nothing.

They knew this storm was coming. Why weren't the dunes built higher on the beaches or sand brought in to build up (they did nothing). The mayor and politics should be ashamed of themselves for doing nothing. All the tax money we give for 3 months at the beach is outrageous. I want to know where that money is going and whose pockets it in.

They Mayor should have stepped up and built the dunes up to help prevent what has happened (like other towns did). But it was ignored.

Now they think were going to "grab and go" when its safe. I have spent over 30yrs in Ortley beach and you think all I need is a few hours, what planet is the mayor living on, this is earth and we have rights. Homeowners should have the right to their home and repair if possible. The longer they wait the worse the situation. The mold in these houses is going to be uncontrollable if something isn't done soon. WE NEED TO GET IN AND GET IN NOW!!!

I think it is a plan for the politics to take over Ortley Beach and leave the homeowners with nothing. What they will condemn the beach, leave us with nothing, rebuild and make millions. The politics are corrupt in Toms River and sneaky.

It has been almost 2 weeks and we still can't get in. Its my home, my property and my life. I paid the high taxes and I want answers.

Mr. Mayor you should be ashamed for doing nothing to help prevent this from happening!!!! And you you couldn't even show your face at the meeting!!! How much tax money from ortley beach is in your pocket???

I would like to comment on your post. My brother owns a home in Ortley (or does he? My friend owns a home in Ortley (or does he?) In this, the 21st. Century and with the greatest technology at our fingertips, why is it that there is little or no information regarding the damage on Ortley. These people are desperate for "just some information". For all the effort and money being spent in these devasting areas, what does it take to take some photos at the very least and post on the internet so these people can at least get a visual of their property. For the extremely high taxes that these residents are paying, this would be the least that Toms River can do. Give them something. PLEASE...put yourself in their place, what if it was you :( so sad

Most of the property owners in Ortley are not residents so they have no vote in Toms River . So why do you think that the politicans care about you just pay the taxes due and shut up . By the way I have not heard about canceling of late fees on those tax payments.

The comment above about the politicians taking over Ortley Beach is true and I have proof. I contacted 7 on your side. If they dont answer I am posting it ever where I can. I also have them stating that the storm drains on the bay side is what caused so much damage. look at Lavallette then look at Ortley. There is something really wrong with that and that was not just mother nature at work.

I am a full time year round permenent resident of Ocean Beach 3 - which is also Toms River. In recent articles the Mayor has referred to the barrier island as "those people". They think we are all wealthy snobs that can afford a second home so we can afford to lose it. Well, I worked hard for a lifetime to be able to retire at my house. My life and livelyhood is there and I am locked out knowing full well I can access the house via the northern section of Rt 35 south via Brick. I am lucky - by satelitte inages, hours of reviewing videos and a neighbor finally hiring a helicopter, I know I have a house - though flooded. By locking us out - our houses are rotting and molding over. What may have been able to be salvaged is now destroyed. I believe we should seceed asap and sue TomS River for their inept leadership and lack of preparedness in the event of an emergency. If this was a minor event - I do not have the confidence they would have reacted differently. If there are so many boats and police patrolling the island - why are new videos and pics being posted with people trespassing on my neighbors properties to video? With so many boats patrolling, why not allow us to be ferried over? Are the paddle boats not available to provide transport? My neighbor did take a boat over and did not get caught - that is how I have any information on our street other than satellite and video. I want unteathered access by my own vehicle to start rebuilding NOW!

What I hear is that all the homes over there are going to have to be rebuilt to a height of 12 feet above sea level, so repairing what you have may be impossible with the restraints they (the DEP and Army corp of Engineers) are probably going to put on anyone who owns a house on the shore. Something has to be done, because the amount of taxes Toms River is going to lose will bankrupt the town.

I'm so glad to see that someone has finally brought up the " lack of dunes ". I do not live in ortley , I live in toms river, but have been going there since I was a child. The beach area in ortley has gotten smaller and smaller over the past 10-15 years and it seems like nobody cared until now. There are 2 reasons why the beach was how it was...the township didn't build the dunes high enough and didn't maintain the size of the beach, as well as the homeowners who "bitched" about the dunes being to high and blocking their ocean view. Shame on all of you. So much beach badge money coming in, yet nobody knows where it goes...it's a shame

Thanks Ed for being so supportive. Should they take my rights away to my home and property as.well. My high taxes pay for your kids to get a good education. You should be thanking us. By the way after 30yrs of busting my butt I should let it go away because of 1 storm. I'm not rich (far from it) I work hard for what I have.

Oh spare me, maybe if the mayor posted on The Patch the storm would've by-passed Toms River. It's the DEP and the Army Corp of Engineers who approves and builds the dunes. NOT your local government.

ALL of our taxes are high.

No, you are incorrect...for an upcoming STORM...it is the Township/Dept of Emergency Management/Public Works that build or supposed to build the temporary dunes in accordance with the DEP guidelines. I have photos where access roads to the beach the morning of the storm did not have dunes packed into them. Not saying this would have prevented all of this, but it may have diminished some. And, now the website notes that some of the current construction is causing add'l issues. Ortley Beach is not an access way for other towns; yet, it is being used as such. The HEAVY equipment which is clearing the roads....is going through Ortley Beach and then back again. They are pushing the debris onto our secondary roadways and causing add'l issues...how about clearing and removing the debris FROM THE ISLAND and not using the secondary streets as trashways. My street was in pretty good condition considering (no houses on it...no houses moved from foundations....some debris/that is it...I have photos of the before and after from a neighbor who rode it out...houses on the block(s) in good condition....all have water and wind damage, but not too bad in comparison....not great, but not too bad. And, agree...ALL of our taxes are high, but alot of the islanders don't use all of the Township services (i.e., schools, etc.) but still pay the SAME rate.

I understand and appreciate your concerns, I have two families from the barrier island staying with me in Toms River. I know fireman, police and national guard who have been on the island, it is not safe for homewowners or vehicles, yet.

To imply that the worst storm to ever hit this area is some one's fault is simply stupid. Good Luck I hope your home and family are safe.

I think that most of you should visit town hall and see the efforts being made for the ENTIRE township. Have you seen the damage and destruction on the mainland - houses and neighborhoods wiped out.
Have all of you forgotten the words " patience and tolerance"
The damage in Ortley is the worst - it is unsafe to allow free travel there - other areas are in better shape ie Seaside Park
public safety comes first - the looting is a real problem - ask the state police !!!!
This is the time for understanding - not name calling.

patience & tolerance ran out about a week ago. At this point, it's criminal what they are doing to people with homes in Ortley Beach. Somehow it's safe enough to drive through Ortley on the way north but not safe enough for us to check out our homes. I've had it up to here with these <people> telling me what they are doing for my own good. Get out of my way and let me take care of myself. Seriously, when this is over there needs to be a serious re-evaluation of whether Ortley Beach belongs as part of Toms River

Lavalette....lavalette!!! Release Ortley to it and let it get all the fed/state funding re the cleanup and get it done well ALL while taking care of the community/residents/taxpayers (some of which are still living safely and soundly there all under their watchful eye) and still collecting trash. Now, THAT is a Township/Community.

Here is mayors Kelaher's email adress TKelaher@tomsrivertownship.com. Start pounding him with emails why and when is Orley Beach getting in. With the warm days the mold is spreading faster and we need to something before we all lose our homes. And where is his support, I haven't seen or heard from him once since Sandy hit us. I have a feeling he doesn't care about Ortley Beach, just cares about our tax dollars. Something has to happen now, it will be 2 weeks and still no word on Ortley Beach. FREE ORTLEY BEACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With all of you are screaming that you are not allowed to access your homes in Ortley and Ocean Beach, well perhaps you should take up your complaints with the State Department of Transportation. They are the ones who are not allowing the Mayor and the Police to give you permission to go over to your homes to retreive your belongings. The DOT are the ones who are telling the police and the politicians that these roads are not stable for ANYONE to travel. There were people who were allowed to access their property for 1 hour and as they were brought through Ortley they saw the UTTER DEVISTATION that hit Ortley! The people who were one the bus only had one saying and that was " OH, MY GOD Look to the right look to the left all you see is utter devistation!" There were sink hole where homes once stood or there were homes with a sink hole around it or there are pieces of the steeet that are missing! I understand that you are all upset that you have not seen your homes but, there are some places where they are going to have to bring in someone to survey the property to tell the homeowner where their property began and where it ends. You all have no idea how bad Ortley was hit.

TEA, Please give us a break. So what does anything of what you said have anything to do with residents going to THEIR PROPERTY for more than an hour. There are also people coming out and saying that it is a mess and some places are totally destroyed. But they can't see the residents can't get back in and work on their home too. LBI, THE SEASIDES, KEYPORT, KEANSBURG,UNION BEACH, STATEN ISLAND all places hit hard and aloud back to work on their homes while work around them goes on. And of course some places will have to be surveyed because of the destruction. Thats not a big deal.

"Ortley Beach residents start access on Wednesday. Rt 35N to Rt35S, Lavelette to Seaside Heights. 8am to 3pm. I'm guessing that means the center Island in between the highways. POSTED ON TR WEBSITE."
Two residence per household. After surrendering your IDs and brought over on a school bus with an armed guard. And make sure you do not wander. Armed guards will be manning the perimeter.

I have a question and hopefully someone knows the correct answer. When was the last time the island from Point Beach to Island Beach had a beach replenishment project ? The type of project that was funded by the state or federal government. I recall seeing them always north of the inlet by Manasquan but never on the barrier island.

I heard that all the towns north of the inlet always agreeed to the replenishment. Army Corp Eng wanted to due Point Pleasant to Seaside Park. All or none. Bay Head and Mantaoking always rejected it. Go figure.
