I would like to comment on your post. My brother owns a home in Ortley (or does he? My friend owns a home in Ortley (or does he?) In this, the 21st. Century and with the greatest technology at our fingertips, why is it that there is little or no information regarding the damage on Ortley. These people are desperate for "just some information". For all the effort and money being spent in these devasting areas, what does it take to take some photos at the very least and post on the internet so these people can at least get a visual of their property. For the extremely high taxes that these residents are paying, this would be the least that Toms River can do. Give them something. PLEASE...put yourself in their place, what if it was you :( so sad

Most of the property owners in Ortley are not residents so they have no vote in Toms River . So why do you think that the politicans care about you just pay the taxes due and shut up . By the way I have not heard about canceling of late fees on those tax payments.

I am a full time year round permenent resident of Ocean Beach 3 - which is also Toms River. In recent articles the Mayor has referred to the barrier island as "those people". They think we are all wealthy snobs that can afford a second home so we can afford to lose it. Well, I worked hard for a lifetime to be able to retire at my house. My life and livelyhood is there and I am locked out knowing full well I can access the house via the northern section of Rt 35 south via Brick. I am lucky - by satelitte inages, hours of reviewing videos and a neighbor finally hiring a helicopter, I know I have a house - though flooded. By locking us out - our houses are rotting and molding over. What may have been able to be salvaged is now destroyed. I believe we should seceed asap and sue TomS River for their inept leadership and lack of preparedness in the event of an emergency. If this was a minor event - I do not have the confidence they would have reacted differently. If there are so many boats and police patrolling the island - why are new videos and pics being posted with people trespassing on my neighbors properties to video? With so many boats patrolling, why not allow us to be ferried over? Are the paddle boats not available to provide transport? My neighbor did take a boat over and did not get caught - that is how I have any information on our street other than satellite and video. I want unteathered access by my own vehicle to start rebuilding NOW!

i am also a full time resident who pays high taxex becuase we are on the bay side... give us a break and let us get back to care for our homes and get our belongings.. the longer we wait, the more damage mold, etc will happen.. let us sign a waiver to go at our own risks... its our high tax $$ that they dont mind taking all year....

I'm so glad to see that someone has finally brought up the " lack of dunes ". I do not live in ortley , I live in toms river, but have been going there since I was a child. The beach area in ortley has gotten smaller and smaller over the past 10-15 years and it seems like nobody cared until now. There are 2 reasons why the beach was how it was...the township didn't build the dunes high enough and didn't maintain the size of the beach, as well as the homeowners who "bitched" about the dunes being to high and blocking their ocean view. Shame on all of you. So much beach badge money coming in, yet nobody knows where it goes...it's a shame

Oh spare me, maybe if the mayor posted on The Patch the storm would've by-passed Toms River. It's the DEP and the Army Corp of Engineers who approves and builds the dunes. NOT your local government.

I understand and appreciate your concerns, I have two families from the barrier island staying with me in Toms River. I know fireman, police and national guard who have been on the island, it is not safe for homewowners or vehicles, yet.

To imply that the worst storm to ever hit this area is some one's fault is simply stupid. Good Luck I hope your home and family are safe.

The damage in Ortley is the worst - it is unsafe to allow free travel there - other areas are in better shape ie Seaside Park

With all of you are screaming that you are not allowed to access your homes in Ortley and Ocean Beach, well perhaps you should take up your complaints with the State Department of Transportation. They are the ones who are not allowing the Mayor and the Police to give you permission to go over to your homes to retreive your belongings. The DOT are the ones who are telling the police and the politicians that these roads are not stable for ANYONE to travel. There were people who were allowed to access their property for 1 hour and as they were brought through Ortley they saw the UTTER DEVISTATION that hit Ortley! The people who were one the bus only had one saying and that was " OH, MY GOD Look to the right look to the left all you see is utter devistation!" There were sink hole where homes once stood or there were homes with a sink hole around it or there are pieces of the steeet that are missing! I understand that you are all upset that you have not seen your homes but, there are some places where they are going to have to bring in someone to survey the property to tell the homeowner where their property began and where it ends. You all have no idea how bad Ortley was hit.

There are also people coming out and saying that it is a mess and some places are totally destroyed. But they can't see the residents can't get back in and work on their home too. LBI, THE SEASIDES, KEYPORT, KEANSBURG,UNION BEACH, STATEN ISLAND all places hit hard and aloud back to work on their homes while work around them goes on. And of course some places will have to be surveyed because of the destruction. Thats not a big deal.

I have a question and hopefully someone knows the correct answer. When was the last time the island from Point Beach to Island Beach had a beach replenishment project ? The type of project that was funded by the state or federal government. I recall seeing them always north of the inlet by Manasquan but never on the barrier island.

I heard that all the towns north of the inlet always agreeed to the replenishment. Army Corp Eng wanted to due Point Pleasant to Seaside Park. All or none. Bay Head and Mantaoking always rejected it. Go figure.
