Brick office receives more staff as summer influx expected; Ocean City office permanently destroyed, LBI office renovated
Comcast has said it has rebuilt 144 miles worth of cable infrastructure since Superstorm Sandy struck the Shore area and has hired extra staff for coastal area offices as an influx of seasonal customers is anticipated. Additional customer service employees and 170 extra technicians are to start work May 25, the company said in a statement this week. Additionally, at the company's offices in Brick, Absecon, Avalon, Northfield, Ocean City and Wildwood, the number of workstations "has been nearly doubled to provide more expedited, one-on-one attention for customers," the company said. 252-unit complex is proposed for the corner of Route 9 and Whitty Road
Residents expressed concerns that a proposed Pleasant Plains apartment complex with frontage off of Route 9 will bring further traffic congestion to an already crowded area. Another Zoning Board of Adjustment hearing for the 252-unit complex, which is proposed for the southeast corner of Route 9 and Whitty Road near Wallach's Farm Market and Deli, was held last week after a public notice error halted an initial hearing last month. No board action has been taken on the plan yet, as testimony will continue in June. Rosemary Terzi, who lives on the nearby Wallach Drive, told the project engineer that she is concerned Route 9 is already hampered by traffic without hundreds of people moving in off the highway. "What you stated about the …

Boardwalk area from the Sawmill to Spicey's is reopened to the public.
A cool breeze that kept air temperatures in the low 60s weren't much of a deterrent to the dozens of visitors that stopped by the partially-reopened Seaside Heights boardwalk on Saturday - for what many described as their first glimpse of the rebuild since Sandy. Although the ocean side of the beach remained roped off - and will stay that way for a few more weeks - the boardwalk from the Seaside Park end of the boardwalk near the Sawmill to the area just in front of Spicey Cantina has been reopened to visitors. Many games have been reopened - with the familiar sounds of barkers yelling "win a prize here!" down the boards - and those game stands that haven't yet reopened were under construction Saturday afternoon. Most of the dining …

Store is proposed at the corner of Fischer Boulevard and Bay Avenue
Some residents near a proposed Fischer Boulevard convenience store are concerned that the building's distance to the property line may impact their home values. The 3,000 square foot 7-Eleven store, which would replace a former gas station site on the corner of Fischer Boulevard and Bay Avenue, requires a setback variance since it is proposed to be built closer to the property line than township ordinance allows. Some nearby residents worry that could cause problems for them. "That's going to have a detrimental impact to the people's property values and their quality of life," said Edward Liston, the attorney representing five property owners near the site, after Toms River Planning Board members heard a portion of the applicant's …

Tech talents from across the state pulled an all-nighter in Asbury Park last weekend, contributing code to help restore the Shore. The Jersey Shore Comeback-A-Thon, a 24-hour hackathon sponsored by Marathon Data Systems of Wall, challenged developers to create an application to benefit the local business community in the first summer following Superstorm Sandy. “There’s nothing like coding for a good cause,” said Cory Cardio, a Long Branch resident who teamed up with Margaret Kim of Fort Lee and Gary Kagan of Sebastain, Fla. under the moniker “Team Mango.” The trio’s crowd-sourced application allowing community members to give and receive up-to-the-minute location-based information was selected as the hackathon winner. Utility company petitioning state board for consumer rate increase
The state Board of Public Utilities is scheduled to hold a pair of hearings on Wednesday on a proposed rate increase for Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L). The first meeting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Freehold Township Municipal Building, at Schanck and Stillwell Corner roads. The second meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. at the same location. The utility company, roundly criticized for its response during Hurricane Sandy and the nor’easter that followed, wants a rate increase of 4.5 percent in its effort to raise $603 million the company says it needs to repair infrastructure damaged in hurricane’s Sandy and Irene. The company faces opposition. "We will speak for the hundreds of ratepayers who are tired of paying more for less service…

Marina owner: test run through bay showed few problems, though precautions should be taken
Getting ready to take the boat out, but worried that debris from Sandy may make it difficult? GoBoatingNJ.org may help. Since Hurricane Sandy came ashore in late October, reports of unprecedented destruction to area marine facilities have left boaters wondering if there will be a boating season in 2013, said Ed "Skip" Harrison, who is the owner of Baywood Marina, Brick Township, and Board Member of the Marine Trades Association of New Jersey. The GoBoatingNJ.org initiative was launched to address these concerns by providing coverage of the restoration efforts taking place each day by state, federal and municipal agencies as well as scores of volunteers and organizations.
