The Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation, founded in 1940, maintains the parks of Ocean County as well as provides programs and events for children, adults and senior citizens. The Department of Parks and Recreation run 27 parks including the Cattus Island County Park in Toms River, two golf courses, two off-leash dog parks and three nature centers. Some of the parks have Animal Nature Centers with species indigenous to Ocean County such as turtles and snakes. The Department of Parks and Recreation offers a variety of programs including kayaking, boat tours, me and mom classes, nature tours, crabbing tours, ornithology, arts and crafts, senior arthritis programs, yoga, swimming and biking. The department hosts holiday events as well as festivals. It also sets up hikes, camping and campfires. This Parks & Recreation is unique because a lot of the property is in pinelands where there are different species. It is also diverse in what it does: there's a cranberry bog, golf courses, sports, beaches, lakes, bays, wetlands, uplands and more.
