About Mental Health First Aid

Find out what's happening in Toms Riverwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an 8-hour training program that teaches participants a five-step action plan to assist someone with an emerging mental health crisis or disorder. The curriculum covers the most common mental health problems in the US and teaches participants how to assess a situation, select and implement appropriate interventions, and secure appropriate care for an individual experiencing a mental health problem.

The training that MHANJ in Ocean County is offering is made possible through a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJ), and the American Red Cross. It is part of a major initiative to bring Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) to the communities severely impacted by Super Storm Sandy.

Mental Health First Aid was originally created in Australia in 2001, brought to this country in 2008 and administered by the National Council for Behavioral Health. Similar to traditional First Aid and CPR, Mental Health First Aid is help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis until professional treatment is obtained or the crisis resolves. The hope is that MHFA will be as common as First/Aid and CPR in the coming years.
