Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus’ Diabetes Self-Management Education Program Awarded Education Recognition by the American Diabetes Association

Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus’ Diabetes Self Management Education program was recently awarded the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Education Recognition Certificate acknowledging Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus’ high quality self-management education program – an essential component of effective diabetes treatment.

More than 18.8 million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with diabetes and another seven million are unaware they have the disease, according to the ADA. The Diabetes Self-Management Education program at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus offers education for those living with diabetes on managing the disease so they can maintain healthy, active lives and reduce their risk for complications such as stroke, heart and kidney disease, blindness and amputation.

One of the primary goals of the Education Recognition program is to assure high-quality education for patient self-care. ADA Education Recognition, which is awarded for four years, certifies that Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus’ program meets National Standards for quality and continuity and is staffed by knowledgeable health professionals who provide comprehensive information about diabetes management.

“Education Recognition is a voluntary process that gives professionals a national standard by which we can measure the quality of the services we provide,” said Irene Spinelli, MSN, RN, WCC, a Certified Diabetes Educator and Manager of Community Education and Wellness at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus. “Our Diabetes Self-Management Education program equips our community with the tools they need to manage their disease, prevent complications, and strive for better health.”

The DSME program at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus is taught by registered nurses and registered dietitians – all Certified Diabetes Educators. Sessions are held regularly at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus’ Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. A doctor’s prescription is required for this program.
