THE ADULT DAY PROGRAM WE HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR...

COMING SOON TO BRICK TOWNSHIP
NEW BEGINNINGS AT JOEYS PLACE, LLC.

New Beginnings at Joeys Place is a supportive community for young adults with developmental disabilities created and developed by a mother of a young adult with Autism. Knowing the struggles and the triumphs of this ever changing condition, she has created New Beginnings at Joeys Place based on her training of the disability, along with her own experience of what works...and what doesn’t work in raising a child successfully with Autism.

As the parent or caregiver of an adult or child with a developmental disability, daily life can present many challenges. At New Beginnings at Joeys Place we provide a wide range of activities and scheduling options to meet your needs while providing the support and peace of mind you deserve. At New Beginnings at Joeys Place we know how important it is to feel secure about the well-being of those you love. But we also know how important it is for caregivers to have time for a rest and renewal. New Beginnings at Joeys Place provides the perfect solution for vacations and business trips. And when the unexpected happens, we can arrange for immediate admissions.

Caring for a family member with a developmental disability is a full time job that requires not only an enormous love but unlimited patience, understanding and energy. That’s why the New Beginnings at Joeys Place Respite Program has become a lifeline for many caregivers who just need a little time to themselves. Caregiving is demanding – and it’s ok to need a break. Seeking help does not make you a failure. Remember that respite services benefit the person with the disability as well as the caregiver.

Respite care can provide:

• A chance to spend time with other friends and family, or to just relax.
• Time to take care of errands such as shopping, exercising, getting a haircut or going to the doctor.
• Comfort and peace of mind knowing that your family member is spending time with another caring individual.

Respite care can give the individual with the disability the opportunity to:

• Interact with others having similar experiences.
• Spend time in a safe, supportive environment.
• Participate in activities designed to match personal abilities and needs.

Within our gracious and comfortable environment, participants in our Respite Program at New Beginnings at Joeys Place enjoy:

• Assistance with personal care.
• Three well-balanced meals a day, and snacks.

“The Squeeze Machine” & “The Snoezelen Room”

“The Squeeze Machine”

Many people with autistic disorder have problems with oversensitivity to both touch and sound. The “squeeze machine” is a device that delivers deep touch pressure to help individuals learn to tolerate touching and to reduce anxiety and nervousness. The “squeeze machine” applies lateral, inwardly directed pressure to both lateral aspects of a person’s entire body, by compressing the user between two foam-padded panels. Clinical observations and several studies suggest that deep touch pressure is therapeutically beneficial for both children with autistic disorder and probably children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

“The Snoezelen room”

The “Snoezelen room” is designed to offer individuals with special needs and challenging conditions the opportunity to exercise choice through action. These safe, non-threatening environments bridge cognitive, perceptual, behavioral, and physical impairments, as well as other limiting conditions to provide a sense of empowerment. Moreover these environments allow clients to enjoy a wide range of sensory experiences—either passively or actively—that enhance therapy, learning, and relaxation. In the “Snoezelen room” individuals choose the experiences that give them the most pleasure. Participants interact freely with the different components to create positive environments, control the level of sensory stimuli, adapt responses to sensory stimulation, experience easier transition to task, and perform and behave in a more functional manner.

A typical Snoezelen room contains:

• Items to stimulate the visual system such as Bubble tubes, Fiber Optics, and Solar Range projectors with Effect Wheels/Cassettes.
• A variety of mats, cushion, and textures that stimulate the tactile system; many providing vibratory input or deep pressure.
• Different sounds and smells to stimulate the auditory, olfactory, and gustatory systems.
Examples include relaxing music and aromatherapy centers.
• Products for the master systems and fundamental targets in Sensory Integration Therapy—proprioception and vestibular motion—such as ball pools, weighted items, rockers, and swings.
• Soft furnishings and wall padding for positioning, safety, and comfort.
• In addition, the Snoezelen room often affords an opportunity for the participant and caregiver to improve communication, enhance their understanding of each other, and build trust in their relationship
