State Climatologist's Website Predicts Weather for Super Bowl Sunday

State climatologists from Rutgers University are studying the weather leading up to the first outdoor Super Bowl, and those hoping to attend the big game can follow their observations online.

Dave Robinson and his team at the Office of the New Jersey State Climatologist at Rutgers have established BigGameWeather.com, a website that serves as a “one-stop shop” for weather and climate information relating to the NFL’s championship game.

The website was created to predict what the weather will be on Feb. 2, the date of the game at MetLife Stadium, based on the weather pattern on Feb. 2 from previous years.

Robinson told Rutgers Today that there is a 57 percent chance the temperature could dip below freezing during the game, and a 25 percent chance of snow or rain.

In 1961, the area saw 15.2 inches of snowfall, but the worst of it for Newark specifically came in 1985, according to the report.

Robinson is working with his research assistant Dan Zarrow and Assistant State Climatologist Mat Gerbush on the website, according to the university.
