Dubzilla Attacks Local Music Scene

Reggae and ska genres rule local band's repertoire

In Toms River Patch's ongoing feature on local bands and musicians, this week is an interview with Dubzilla, a Beachcomber regular bringing the sweet and gritty sounds of reggae and ska. Check out what Dubzilla has to say in this week's Spotlight on Local Music.

Give us some straight-up "About You" type stuff. A brief history of your band.
Well we were put together by John Kern from the local band Shorty Long and the Jersey Horns. Originally we had two other members but unfortunately things didn’t work out. Then the three of us started practicing and playing local shows. Even thought we each live in different towns we always find a way to practice.

What is the current line-up of your band and when did you form?
Right now we have Bobby Scholz playing bass and on vocals. Nico LaStella is the guitarist. Scott Donley is on the drums. We formed in August 2010.

What genre would you describe your music as/what bands have you been compared to?
We are a reggae and ska group. Some of our songs have rap in them. We have been compared to Sublime mostly or Reel Big Fish without the horns section.

What is your favorite place to perform at on the Jersey Shore and why?
Our favorite place has to be the Beachcomber on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights. They gave us a lot of opportunities to play there and we really appreciate it. It’s a small place so the energy makes it feel like a full house even if its only half. Also people coming off the boardwalk can hear us if they’re not old enough to get it.

Any recent news from the group — new music, big shows, upcoming tours?
Well soon we are coming out with our new demo so that’s going to be cool.

What can we expect from a live show?
When you see us play live you’re going to see a lot of energy and you will feel it too. We have a lot of fun up there and overall it’s just a good time. Also dancing is recommended! Also sing along if you know the words!

What are some of your biggest musical influences?
Some of our biggest influences are Sublime, Shorty Long and the Jersey Horns, Led Zeppelin, and Reel Big Fish.

What does your upcoming show calendar look like? Where can we hear your music?
Unfortunately right now we have no shows lined up as we are still an underground band. You can hear some of our music on our Reverb Nation page or our Facebook page.

How do we find out more about you?
You can find out more about us at our Facebook page.

Anything else to add?
Basically we are three guys doing what we love we are just trying to get some shows and start rocking!
