The sounds of hot music and cool vocals sizzle when Ocean County College’s Arts and Community Center hosts the popular MidWeek Jazz Series. Come hear acclaimed artists play classic jazz and swing in a single 90-minute set! Shows run on Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. on OCC’s Main Campus, College Drive, Toms River, NJ. Please use Parking Lot #2.
September 19: Guitarist, Frank Vignola – A “human whirlwind,” Vignola, has a creative mind and “flying fingers” that sometimes have “trouble with the law of physics.” His appearance for last year, during MidWeek Jazz, proved him to be “one of the world’s truly extraordinary guitarists,” clearly making him “the guitarist of choice for many of the world’s top musicians.” The legendary Les Paul included him in his Five Most Admired Guitarists list! Vignola is backed by youthful guitar ace Vinny Raniolo who displays “equally fiery playing” that resulted from his “jaw-dropping technique.” Other guitar players will want to sit up close and observe their masterful performance!
October 10: Bria Skonberg – She “looks like a Scandinavian angel, plays trumpet like a red hot devil, and sings like a dream,” claims the Wall Street Journal. All those qualities will be on display when Skonberg returns to MidWeek Jazz with her all-star group.
November 28: Three Stars – Pianist Rossano Sportiello, tenor sax master Harry Allen, and vocalist Laura Hull will combine their talents for this special concert. Sportiello “can play anything and very well at that.” Allen's playing has been called “nothing less than perfect.” Hull is “a rare talent indeed (who) can nail any note with good pitch.” A powerhouse trio, indeed!
December 12: Pianist, Jess Gelber – Having performed as part of MidWeek Jazz several times before, primarily as a treasured sideman with Kevin Dorn, this solo outing will demonstrate Gelber’s broad jazz and swing repertoire as well as his versatility. Gelber’s “swinging accuracy” is in the style of great ragtime and stride artists, such as James P. Johnson and Eubie Blake.
January 16: Celebrating Benny! – On the 75th anniversary of Benny Goodman’s landmark Carnegie Hall concert, clarinetists Dan Levinson, Will Anderson, and Pete Anderson will present a three-reed celebration of Goodman’s group swing music. An impressive supporting cast will make this historic evening memorable!
