This deliriously funny comedy centers on the mishaps of renowned tenor Tito
Merelli, known to his fans as “Il Stupendo.”
Scheduled to sing the lead in the opera Otello, everything begins to
unravel. His wife mistakes an
autograph-seeker hidden in his closet for a secret lover. Merelli accidentally takes a double dose of
tranquilizers and passes out, so, the opera company's general manager asks his
assistant to impersonate the opera star.
The disguise succeeds … that is, until Merelli wakes up and heads for
the stage! The comedy unfolds with a
chain-reaction of mistaken identities, double entendres, innuendoes, and
fast-paced onstage entrances and exits.
