July 27, 1979: The Release of the Original Amityville Horror Film, Shot Mostly in Toms River

A house in Toms River took on the role of the Amityville House

Many people do not realize the majority of the original The Amityville Horror movie from 1979 was shot in   A house along the river on Brooks Road was selected, when filming at the actual Amityville house in New York was denied. The second and third films also featured the Brooks Road home.

Other nearby locations have appeared in the films, including Toms River’s , a church in Point Pleasant, and Georgian Court College.

The house has changed hands a few times over the years, and past owners have made a few changes to the house to deter nosy tourists, including changing the house’s appearance and even moving the house from its original location.

In 2010, the current owners of the “Amityville” House put their home up for sale for $1.35 million.

The horror film stars Margot Kidder and James Brolin, and opens with a happy young family falling in love with a house that turns out to be horribly haunted.

The home was built in 1920, but the movie came out today: July 27, 1979, in Toms River's history.

There is a library scene in the film which was filmed at the Bishop Library, Ocean County Library in Toms River. The library's website contains an online photo album where you can see a photograph of James Brolin, the actresses, Ann Addereley & Gerry Tessitore who played the libarians in the film and the library sign which was converted into a sign for the "Amityville Historical Library" just for the film! Visit the album here > http://theoceancountylibrary.org/branches/Bishop/bis_photoalbum.htm

Coincidentally, I recently wrote a short story fiction about this house. Email hollyblogg@gmail.com and a copy will be sent back to you.

Thanks for the link mdenigris. Seen the movie many years ago, James Brolin was great in it. When they filmed here, a friend of mine's mom had a garage sale and he and a few others stopped at her garage sale. Said he was very pleasant and down to earth type of guy.
