Local Black History Month Events

Activities span across generations and genres: Civil War stories, suffragists, art, soul food

Local events for Black History Month are creating daily opportunities to recognize the stories behind the history. Here are just some of many activities part of the celebration of black history.

Wednesday, February 16, 12-4 p.m.: Glory: Viewing and Discussion of Film

  • This award-winning 1989 film is based on the true story of young Col. Robert Gould Shaw, who led the US Civil War’s first all-black volunteer company, fighting prejudices of both his own Union army and the Confederates. Moderator: Michael Zahler, Adjunct Professor of Humanities at Ocean County College. Refreshments will be served. At Ocean County College, Toms River.

Saturday, Feb. 19, 11:30-3 p.m. Black History Month Celebration: All Welcome - Family Event with Special guest Ned Hector

  • The celebration will start with a visit from a step team from Toms River High School North.  This will be followed with a soul food tasting and news from the NAACP.  Then meet Ned Hector, a black revolutionary war soldier from the Battle of Brandywine as he gives a historical dramatization of his life and times. There will also be activities for children. Throughout the day publishers, Just Us Books, will be on hand highlighting some of their Black-interest children's books. Cosponsored by the Toms River NAACP and OCL’s Good for the Soul Team.  Ned Hector is scheduled to speak at 1:30 p.m. At Ocean County Library’s Toms River branch.

Tuesday, Feb. 22 , 6:30 p.m.: A Taste of Africa, presented by Iwa L’Ewa Heritage Dance Ensemble

  • A highly interactive and hands-on lecture/demonstration of African culture that includes fashion, dance, and music.  Participants will try on costumes, play instruments, and learn to dance. At Point Pleasant Beach Branch of Ocean County Library.

Friday, February 25, 12-2 p.m.: Lecture: African-Americans and the Civil War

  • Presentation by Dr. Brian K. Roper, MD RPh, titled “Back Door.” Dr. Roper has been a prominent local speaker on black history for over 20 years. Refreshments will be served. At Ocean County College, Toms River.

Saturday, Feb. 26, 2 p.m.: Ain’t I a Woman?

  • The American Historical Theatre presents actress Daisy Century as Isabella Baumfree (aka Sojourner Truth- 1797-1883).  Dr. Century’s presentation brings to life a remarkable woman who was undeterred by incredible obstacles in her fight for the rights of women and African Americans, and whose path mixed with many leading figures of her day.  Truly a riveting performance!  This program is funded by a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.  Please register. At Ocean County Library, Brick Branch. Also at Lakewood Branch, March 14 at 5 p.m.

Monday, February 28, noon: Closing Ceremony and Lowering of the Black History Flag

  • Event takes place at the flag pole on the Campus Mall. The Closing Ceremony features a lecture by Rhoderick J. Ramsey, ME.d. titled “The Hip Hop Culture,” which discusses how mainstream hip hop constructs African-American masculinity. A reception immediately follows in the College Center Solar Lounge. At Ocean County College, Toms River.
