UPDATE: 18-Year-Old South Toms River Man Dies; Reported in Bayville's Fisher's Pit

According to police scanner chatter, a person was pulled from the water at the pit by rescue personnel late Tuesday night

An 18-year-old South Toms River man drowned Tuesday night while swimming in a water-filled inactive mining pit, authorities said.

Authorities responded to a potential drowning incident involving Gary Douglas at Fisher's Pit, a sand and gravel pit west of Pheasant Drive in Bayville, it was reported Tuesday night.

According to police scanner chatter, a person was pulled from the water at the pit by rescue personnel late Tuesday night.

Berkeley Township police referred a Patch reporter to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office early Wednesday morning. Nobody was available at the prosecutor's office for comment.

According to scanner chatter reported by the social media site Jersey Shore Hurricane News, a person was recovered from Fisher's Pit and was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River with CPR in progress.
