Tuesday Hiring Fair Aims to Pair Veterans with Sandy Recovery Jobs

American Legion-sponsored event runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesday in Toms River

A military-focused job fair aiming to staff "quick-fill" positions available in the wake of Hurricane Sandy is scheduled for Tuesday morning in Toms River.

The free "Hiring Our Heroes" event, being held by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and several state and federal agencies including the American Legion, invites veterans, active duty military, National Guard and reserve members and military spouses to the George P. Vanderveer American Legion Post 129, 2025 Church Rd. in Toms River from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The primary focus of the fair is to find applicants to meet the needs of employers dealing with rebuilding following Sandy's devastation in New Jersey. Employers specializing in building, construction, inspection, clean-up and hauling, and demolition were recruited for the fair, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Job seekers and employers are asked to register online prior to the event. Those in need of registration assistance are asked to contact hiringourheroes@uschamber.com.

We all need work, not just those who volunteered for the military. We are so segmented in the work world, you have to be a vet, or a woman, or black to be a candidate it seems,

I agree. I am not taking anything away from our servicemen and servicewomen, but it's so backwards to give special treatment to anyone, especially because the same groups are always fighting for equal rights and equal pay. The obvious bipolar nature of our society is laughable.

Sorry but these guys were fighting on two fronts with MANY deployments and NOT in the good old USA job market..They are NOW coming home to help the home front rebuild and need to know whats out their in the job market ( slim pickings) for all involved. Not looking for a hand out , but a hand up.....to go back to the life THEY put on hold for US.....This isn't/hasn't been the ONLY job fair in resent months for all seeking employment, just ONE for Vets getting a fair shot at some level for a steady job...or unemployment Ins. WILL kick in and that's a burden on all of us in " over taxed NJ " and the Nation ...

I have however worked in my field for over 20 years spend about 6-8 hours a day 3-4 times week applying for jobs... as I said ... over 40, white, female... Not a big market for that. ( but not a senior yet)

@truth Maybe not making a point of age and gender and telling someone what field you have experience would make a point. Good luck Michael, try contacted the companies that have received the hauling contracts for removing waste from the barrier islands. Ocean County Roads should have their contact info, they hired them.

@ John ... Well Its pretty obvious when someone looks at me that Iam white, & that Iam not under 25. I also wear a wedding ring so anyone can see Iam married& this is NOT the place to advertise or apply for a job... sorry some might be fine, but a lot of strange people on here

In order to help our vets (and others) find good solid employment in these times requires each and every one of us to compel our elected officials to verify that ALL of those employed by a contractor have a valid Social Security card or that builder may not be certified to do business in NJ. And I don't mean the ID looks good enough. Verification MUST be made. We must do it for our vets and everyone else. This is why unemployment is so high and it also depresses our wages because those who work under the table can take less and keep more and that is not fair. If the pols did this from the beginning, this state and nation would not be in the shape it is in.

NOT to take away to get Vets jobs, My father was a vet, I have a brother that is serving and many close family members that are deployed as we speak. But lets be honest... cleaning up this mess, how long is that going to take... maybe a year? Yes a job is great, & good thing for sandy creating Jobs in America... now lets think of some long term. & BTW agreed PLEASE pay these people " on the books" they need to pay into Fedl tax.. many of them already admittedly are collected unemployment ( Or disability) while working for 12-15$ a hr " under the table" cleaning up... there making out better then most right now....

I would agree with you if it only pertained to those military members....but it does not. There are many National Guard and Reserve members that have never served oversea nor anywhere near a front. I see a huge difference in serving overseas near the battle zones compared to Nat'l Guard/Reserves that are stationed here in the US.

To truth hurts: Granted, the rebuilding won't last forever but there will always be something. And to reiterate, how many more jobs would there be if we clamped down on unscrupulous employers who hire those who have no documentation?

Opinionated, its true many guys are being hired as day labor or short term getting paid cash so they do not lose any govt. funded benefits... small companies or even private home owners are hiring these men.
